Foetus found in lavatory of AirAsia plane, taekwondo player says she lost it

A foetus, believed to be around six months old, was recovered from a lavatory of an AirAsia plane after it landed here from Guwahati this afternoon, police said. When an alarm was raised by the cabin crew about the discovery, a 19-year-old taekwondo player admitted that she lost the foetus, they said. The woman was supposed to travel to South Korea tomorrow for a tournament and was accompanied by her coach. The cabin crew was doing a routine check of the lavatories when they found the foetus wrapped in toilet paper. The flight number I5 784 had originated from Imphal. The plane landed at the T-3 terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport here at 3.30 pm. According to the police, the woman who boarded the plane in Guwahati delivered "a pre-mature dead foetus". The police have sent the foetus for post-mortem and the woman has been sent for a medical examination. Raj: Mortal remains of CRPF jawan killed in Batamaloo attack consigned to flames

The mortal remains of CRPF jawan Shankar Lal Barala, killed in a terrorist attack in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar in Kashmir, were consigned to flames at his native Tejpura village in Rajasthan today. Barala, posted in 23rd Batallion of the paramilitary force, was killed when militants fired upon at CRPF personnel guarding a checkpost yesterday. Two jawans were also injured in the attack. A pall of gloom descended on Tejpura, which falls in Shahpura town of Jaipur Rural area, when news about Barala's death reached the village. A large number of villagers gathered at his funeral site today to pay tributes to him. They were chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram' slogans in his honour. Barala's 10-year-old son Ankit lit his funeral pyre. Earlier, Barala was given the guard of honour by the CRPF. With the summer heat beating down on North Korea, its biggest brewery is pumping out twice as much beer as usual, residents are queuing up for syrupy treats and restaurants are serving up bowl after bowl of spicy dog meat soup. Euphemistically known as "dangogi," or sweet meat, dog has long been believed to be a stamina food in North and South Korea and is traditionally eaten during the hottest time of the year, giving a sad twist to old saying "dog days of summer." The dates are fixed according to the lunar calendar and dog meat consumption centers around the three hottest days July 17 and 27, and August 16. Demand appears to be especially high this year as temperature hover near 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

The Sports Ministry is open to the idea of considering outstanding performers of next month's Asian Games for this year's National Sports Awards, which will be held on September 25 instead of the conventional August 29 to ensure that athletes don't miss out due to their participation in the continental showpiece. Every year, the National Sports Awards ceremony is held on August 29 at the Rashtrapati Bhawan to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand as the National Sports Day. But in a departure from tradition, the awards ceremony will be held on September 25 to avoid a clash of dates with the Asian Games to be held in the Indonesian twin cities of Jakarta and Palembang from August 18 to September 2. Tamil Nadu CM names lioness cub 'Jaya'

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami today named a lioness cub at the zoo here as 'Jaya' and recalled late AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa's love for animals. Also, he inaugurated enclosures for tigers and a children's park set up at a total cost of Rs 54 lakh at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur, about 40 km from here, an official press release said. The zoo has a pride of 10 lionesses and seven lions, the release said. The cub named Jaya was born on January 27, it said. Jayalalithaa was an animal lover, who had taken measures for basic infrastructure in the zoo, the release quoted the Chief Minister as saying. The zoo, home to 2,410 animals and 46 species of birds, would soon get a rhinoceros from the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna, it said. The new enclosures for tigers, too, were expected to accommodate four more of the big cats, in addition to the 26 present, the release said. Michael Ondaatje named in Man Booker Prize long list

Canadian author Michael Ondaatje has again made the Man Booker Prize list with his latest novel "Warlight," weeks after his book "The English Patient" was named the best work of fiction from the last five decades of the literary prize. Organizers today announced the 13 books in the long list for the prestigious award, chosen from 171 submissions this year the highest number of titles that has been put forward in the prize's 50-year history. Ondaatje's "The English Patient," which won the Booker in 1992, was named winner of the Golden Man Booker winner on July 8, a special award to mark the Booker's 50th anniversary.
