Shame on you: Rihanna to Snapchat over controversial ad

Singer Rihanna has slammed messaging app Snapchat over an advertisement that sought to promote domestic violence and referenced her 2009 assault by Chris Brown. The advertisement, made for the promotion of the mobile game Would You Rather?, asked users which of the artists they would prefer to hit. "Slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown," the tagline on the ad stated, apparently in reference to Brown's conviction for assaulting Rihanna in 2009 while they were dating. The 30-year-old singer took to Instagram and posted a lengthy comment, saying she was "trying to figure out what the point was with this mess". 'Bootcamp East Zone' begins campaign on cruelty on animals

Seventy animal rights activists of 12 states have come here to participate in a campaign for 'Animals need Compassion' today, an organiser said. The three-day 'Bootcamp East Zone, Kolkata' meet is aimed at creating awareness among the people about the need to prevent cruelty on animals and create an environment of co-existence in both urban and rural areas, Director of Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisation (FIAPO) Varda Mehrotra told reporters here. The meet, organised by FIAPO, will also campaign against poaching of rhino in the Kaziranga National Park and smuggling of dog meat from the north eastern region besides emphasising on health care of street animals, FIAPO trustee Abodh Ara said. Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has given her formal consent for her grandson Prince Harry to marry US actress Meghan Markle, according to a transcript of a meeting with her advisers released on Thursday. "I declare My Consent to a Contract of Matrimony between My Most Dearly Beloved Grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales and Rachel Meghan Markle," the Queen said at a meeting of her Privy Council in Buckingham Palace on Wednesday. Afghan who stormed toward Merkel has psychological problems

Police say a man from Afghanistan who tried to reach German Chancellor Angela Merkel as she exited Parliament has been committed to a psychiatric clinic. German TV stations showed the man shouting unintelligibly while being tackled by plainclothes police as Merkel walked out of the Bundestag following her election for a fourth term Wednesday. The man was tackled to the ground about 20 feet (6 meters) away from Merkel as she got into her car. Berlin police said today the 23-year-old, whose name hasn't been released, has psychological problems but his actions "weren't religiously or politically motivated." The man is being investigated on suspicion of resisting arrest.

Senior cooperative leaders from Rajkot Jyotidnra Mehta and Dolarbhai Kotecha were today elected unopposed as the chairman and vice-chairman of the Gujarat Urban Cooperative Banks Federation (GUJFED). "The federation's board of directors meeting was held in Ahmedabad today, where Jyotindra Mehta was elected as chairman and Dolarbhai Kotecha as vice chairman unopposed of GUJFED," the GUJFED said in a release. Mehta has been holding the post since 2006 while Kotecha since 2009," it said. United to use special tags for pet carriers after dog death

United Airlines plans to issue bright colored bag tags to people traveling with pets to prevent animal carriers from being placed in overhead bins following the death of a puppy on one of its flights. The Chicago-based airline says a flight attendant who ordered the passenger to put her pet carrier in the overhead bin aboard a Houston-to-New York flight Monday didn't know there was a dog inside. The family and other passengers contradict the airline's account, saying the dog's barks were audible from inside the bin. United said in a statement it will start issuing the tags by April. Late Wednesday, the Harris County, Texas, district attorney's office said its animal cruelty division is working with the county's animal cruelty task force to investigate what happened on the plane.

Rs 20 Cr allotted to convert Jaya's residence into memorial

The Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs 20 crore to convert 'Veda Nilayam', the official residence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa here, into a memorial, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam announced today. This was in addition to the construction of a "grand memorial" at her burial site at the famous Marina beach here, at a cost of Rs 50.80 crore, he said in his budget speech in the assembly. Officials have recently commenced preliminary work on the proposed conversion of Jayalalithaa's residence in Poes Garden locality here into a memorial. Jayalalithaa died on December 5, 2016. Panneerselvam also said a grand function would be held here marking the culmination of birth centenary celebrations of AIADMK founder and late Chief Minister M G Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR. The celebrations began in January last and the government had been holding events in all 30 districts across the state.
