A toddler died after falling in a bucket of water in east Delhi's Ashok Nagar, the police said today. The baby went to the bathroom with a tumbler and started dipping it in a bucket of water. When the tumbler fell in water he leaned to retrieve it and fell in the bucket, the police said. The mother was asleep during the incident and she woke up only after her husband returned from work, it said. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors failed to resuscitate him, it added.

An elderly NRI couple died today after being hit by a train near the Ambala City railway station, the railway police said. The deceased were identified as Sohan Lal (84) and Seeta (80), police said. The couple was residing with their son in New Zealand and had come to India a fortnight back to attend a wedding of their relative scheduled for March 24, they said. Railway police officials said when the couple were crossing the railway crossing near the Ambala City railway station in the afternoon they were hit by the train, police said. The couple were hit as they failed to notice the approaching train and died on the spot, they said. The relatives of the deceased couple were informed, police said.
Insisting on his demand for special category status to Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the promises made by the centre at the time of bifurcation of the state. Addressing the Legislative Council, he also said the TDP wanted the Centre to review the implementation of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and the promises made. Gold bars weighing 1.4 kg and worth about Rs 43 lakh was seized from the toilet of an aircraft which arrived here from Dubai by the customs officials today. The seizure was made by the officials during rummaging of the aircraft, an official release said. The gold bars were found concealed in two packets that were wrapped using adhesive tape in the rear toilet of the aircraft, it said. The aircraft, which was scheduled to depart for New Delhi, was later diverted to Colombo due to "technical reasons".
The "Academy Award for Nobel Peace" from the USA has been conferred on Dr Ketzia David Prakasam, a philanthropist, social worker and spiritual worker here. Ketzia is the first Indian woman to receive this award, presented yesterday as part of International Womens Day celebrations here, a release said today. The timings of the change of guard ceremony on the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan have been changed, according to an official statement issued today. The ceremony will now take place at 0800-0840 hrs on Saturdays and at 1730 -1810 hrs on Sundays, it said. These new Summer timings will be adhered to till November 14, 2018. The change of guard ceremony is open to the public. Visitors having a valid photo ID card may witness the ceremony free of cost, subject to availability of seats, the statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said. Entry is through Gate number 2 or 37 of Rashtrapati Bhavan, it said.

A rare, signed letter by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy giving editorial advice to a philosopher Pyotr Petrovich Nikolaev, was sold for USD 21,450 at an auction. Nikolaev had sent Tolstoy a letter enclosing his manuscript on the 'distortions of the teachings of Christ' in mid-July 1903. The three-page long letter is the first handwritten Tolstoy letter we have offered in nearly eight years, US-based RR Auctions said. It was expected to sell for USD 15,000 at the online auction.
