The Japanese navy said today it had for the first time appointed a woman as commander of a unit that includes the country's biggest warship. Ryoko Azuma, 44, will command four warships making up a division with a total of 1,000 crew members. "This is the first time a woman was appointed for the job," a spokesman for the Maritime Self-Defence Force told AFP. "But she wasn't chosen because she was a woman." The ships include the helicopter carrier Izumo, the navy's biggest ship. "I want to do my best to carry out the heavy duty I have been given," Azuma told reporters after a ceremony at Yokohama near Tokyo to mark her arrival in the post. A man was allegedly shot dead and his girlfriend raped by an unidentified person in Nalimbi village here tonight, the Thane rural police said. Ganesh Dinkar and his girlfriend were at a hillock when a man approached them and demanded money, they said. When the couple said they had no money on them, the man pointed a gun at Dinkar and allegedly raped his girlfriend. When Dinkar resisted, the accused shot him dead and fled, police said.
Police today foiled a bid by a married couple from Thane district to sell their four-month-old son for Rs 6 lakh, an official said. The couple, who already had a son and a daughter, were trying to sell their third child to a woman representative of an orphanage based in Udaipur, said ASP, Bhayander, Atul Kulkarni. Police laid a trap at a restaurant in Meera-Bhayandar area and took the couple into custody along with the representative of the orphanage. "The couple had got in touch with the woman who works for Radhika Child Care in Udaipur and wanted to sell the baby to the needy person," he said. The ASP said the police also found a 10-year-old son and a 2.5-year-old daughter of the couple along with them. Mira Road Police are investigating further. The duo have been booked under various sections of the IPC.

The Gujarat government today admitted in the Legislative Assembly that 32 Asiatic lions died due to "unnatural causes" such as falling into wells in the last two years in and around Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in the state. While 12 lions, including cubs, died in 2016, 20 died of unnatural causes -- in various kinds of accidents -- in 2017, Forest Minister Ganpat Vasava told the House in a written reply during the Question Hour. Congress's Gyasuddin Shaikh had sought details of lion deaths, causes, and the government's plan to prevent deaths. Vasava said a total of 184 lions died in and around the Gir sanctuary in the last two years -- 104 in 2016 and 80 in 2017. Thirty-two of them died of unnatural causes (12 in 2016 and 20 last year), the Assembly was told. The minister admitted that wells without parapet walls often become death traps for the animals who fall in and drown. The Rajya Sabha today condoled the death of former members Narsingh Narain Pandey and Faguni Ram. When the House met for the day, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu mentioned the death of Pandey on January 8 at the age of 88 and that of Ram on February 25 at the age of 73. A social worker, Pandey represented Uttar Pradesh in the Upper House from June 1980 to April 1982. "In the passing away of Shri Narsingh Narain Pandey, the country has lost an able parliamentarian and a dedicated social worker," Naidu said in his obituary reference. Ram was a member of Rajya Sabha from Bihar for three terms - February 1985 to April 1988, April 1988 to April 1994 and April 2000 to April 2006.
