The funeral prayers for Asma Jahangir, Pakistan's human rights icon and staunch critic of the country's powerful army, were offered here today at the Gaddafi Stadium which was attended by thousands of mourners, including women. Asma, 66, died of cardiac arrest last Sunday in Lahore. Farooq Haider Maududi, the son of Jamaat-i-Islami founder and prominent Islamic scholar Abul Ala Maududi, led the funeral prayer. A number of rights activists, lawyers, judges, government officials, celebrities and ordinary citizens were present in the funeral to pay respect to the woman who fought for the rights of people especially women and struggled against the military dictators. The Maharashtra government today announced sports awards for the last three years, taking the total number of awardees to 195. Bartlebaugh opened the box expecting a sleeveless dress. But she found a lacy, tiered dress that had been put in the box by a now-defunct dry cleaner in 1985. Bartlebaugh posted about the mix-up on Facebook. Her friends shared the photos and a woman responded within hours that the dress belonged to her best friend's mom. Using toilets at railway stations could soon be cheaper or even free at smaller railway stations, according to a new proposal by the Railway Board. Presently, the 'pay and use' toilet policy allows the contractors who build such toilets to fix its usage rates, albeit at market price. According to the new policy, the Divisional Railway Managers have been empowered to decide if they want these toilets to be paid for or keep them free for use of the public. "DRMs are empowered to make location specific assessments to decide whether construction, operation, maintenance of the pay and use toilets should be taken up as an 'earning contract' or a service contract," said a letter dated February 7 from the Railway Board to all zonal railways after the Board's meeting on February 2. In a service contract, the toilets would be free or a nominal fee would be charged from the user. A 55-year-old man was killed in a bear attack at an estate near Valparai in the district early today. A few estate workers who were going for work noticed the body of Susai, a resident of waterfall estate, lying amid the bush, police said.
