IIT Kanpur successfully conducts test flight for cloud seeding: Report

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur has successfully conducted a test flight for cloud seeding, a statement issued by the premier institution said on Thursday. Cloud seeding involves the utilisation of various chemical agents such as silver iodide, dry ice, common salt, and other elements with the aim of enhancing the probability of rains, it said. The project was initiated a few years ago and is headed by the Computer Science and Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur. The flight went up to an approximate height of 5,000 feet. It landed on the IIT Kanpur lab airstrip after successfully completing the test ride on Wednesday. The experiment was conducted with due approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Admission process for institutes like IIT based on discipline: Bombay HC

Institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are centres of technical studies par excellence in the country and the process of finding students is based on discipline, the Bombay High Court said while refusing relief to an 18-year-old boy who failed to submit his online form for the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Advanced due to a technical glitch. The boy, Atharva Desai, in his petition claimed that he lived in a rural area where there were frequent power outages because of which he was unable to register himself online in the given time frame. The petitioner sought a direction from the court for his registration form to be accepted and to permit him to appear for JEE-Advanced scheduled to be held on June 4. The Joint Admission Board of the IIT opposed the plea on the ground that as per their records, Desai had logged in on the portal for the first time to fill the online form a day after the deadline and hence, no relief ought to be granted to him. IIT Madras partners construction cos for implementing 'lean construction'

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras is partnering with top firms across the country to implement "lean construction" that can reduce waste and the duration of construction in comparison with conventional techniques. Lean construction is a technique borrowed from "lean manufacturing" and adapted to construction to reduce eight kinds of waste - overproduction, inventory, defects, motion, over-processing, waiting, transportation, and human talent. According to officials, construction projects are often delayed and go over budget partly due to the construction process being inefficient and inadequate planning leading to wastage. "India is going through a boom in infrastructure projects. To complete projects successfully, one must align the people, process and technology elements of the project. By using a lean construction approach, these elements are integrated and aligned thus increasing the chances of project success," said Koshy Varghese, Professor at the Department of Civil

IIT-Guwahati develops catalyst to produce sustainable green hydrogen fuel

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Guwahati have developed a catalyst that can produce sustainable green hydrogen fuel from wood alcohol with no carbon dioxide as a byproduct, according to officials. The easy and environmentally safe process also produces formic acid which is a useful industrial chemical. This makes methanol a promising Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) and contributes to the concept of hydrogen-methanol economy, the officials said. The research has been published in journal ACS Catalysis. Akshai Kumar AS, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT-Guwahati said the world is moving towards finding alternatives to fossil fuels, and hydrogen gas continues to be the best source of clean energy generation. "Currently, hydrogen is produced either by the electrochemical splitting of water or from bio-derived chemicals such as alcohol. In the latter method, hydrogen is typically produced from methyl alcohol (commonly called wood alcohol) using
