The Asia Pacific and Japan region is emerging as a hotbed for innovation, and various governments are driving digital transformation projects, a senior AWS official has said. Initiatives like Digital India have successfully showcased how technology can be used to address citizen needs at scale, said Rahul Sharma, Managing Director, Worldwide Public Sector - APAC and Japan at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Sharma outlined a positive outlook for government-led tech spending in the region for 2024. Spending around mission projects, driven by various governments, is expected to have a bigger component of technology, he said. "According to IMF, Asia Pacific is the growth engine for the world...also it is really where a lot of innovation is happening...one of the things we are seeing, specifically, is the wave of government-led digital transformation in Asia Pacific and Japan," Sharma told PTI on the sidelines of AWS re: Invent 2023. The top diplomats from South Korea, Japan and China met Sunday to discuss when to resume their leaders' trilateral summit after a four-year hiatus and how to strengthen cooperation among the three Northeast Asian neighbours. Closely linked economically and culturally with one another, the three countries together account for about 25 per cent of the global gross domestic product. But efforts to boost trilateral cooperation have often hit a snag because of a mix of issues including historical disputes stemming from Japan's wartime aggression and the strategic competition between China and the United States. Korea, Japan and China have the potential for massive cooperation. Our three countries are neighbours that can't be separated from one another, South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said at the start of the meeting in Busan, South Korea. I hope we can strive together to hold the South Korea-Japan-China summit, which is at the apex of three-way cooperation, at an early ...

North Korea told Japan that it will make a third attempt to launch a military spy satellite later this month, Japanese media reported Tuesday. Kyodo News, citing Japan's coast guard, said that North Korea notified Tokyo of its plan to launch the spy satellite sometime between Nov. 20 and Nov. 30. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told officials to try to talk Pyongyang into scrapping the plan in cooperation with the United States and South Korea, the Kyodo report said. In North Korea's two previous attempts earlier this year, the rockets carrying the satellites failed during the launch due to technical reasons. North Korea had vowed a third launch would take place sometime in October, but failed to follow through with the plan without giving any reason. North Korea says it needs a spy satellite to deal with what it calls increasing US-led military threats. South Korea retrieved debris from the first launch and called the satellite too crude to perform military reconnaissance.
The release of a third batch of treated radioactive wastewater from Japan's damaged Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean ended safely as planned, its operator said on Monday, as the country's seafood producers continue to suffer from a Chinese import ban imposed after the discharges began. Large amounts of radioactive wastewater have accumulated at the nuclear plant since it was damaged by a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011. It began discharging treated and diluted wastewater into the ocean on August 24 and finished releasing the third 7,800-ton batch on Monday. The process is expected to take decades. The discharges have been strongly opposed by fishing groups and neighbouring countries including China, which banned all imports of Japanese seafood, badly hurting Japanese producers and exporters of scallops and other seafood. The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, said the third release, like the two previous ones, went smoothly and marine sampl

Japanese auto major Honda is all set to introduce its India-made mid-sized SUV Elevate in the Japanese market next year. It would be the first instance that a product manufactured by Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), a wholly-owned unit of the Japanese firm, will be exported to the highly regulated Japanese market. HCIL is rolling out Elevate from its Tapukara (Rajasthan-based) production facility. "After its successful debut in India earlier this year, Elevate is scheduled for Spring 2024 launch in the Japanese market under the brand name WR-V," an HCIL spokesperson said in a statement. In a first for HCIL, the model will be manufactured in India and exported to Japan, it added. "This strategic move is a strong reflection of manufacturing capabilities of India operations and also solidifies our vision of making the country a key export hub in Honda business," the spokesperson said. The company's Tapukara-based plant is fully equipped to take care of the domestic as well as export ...
Two more Japanese banks are set to join 10 foreign and 16 local banks in the tax-free GIFT City, where more than 550 businesses with assets worth USD 47 billion have registered and begun operations, an official said.. This marks a significant expansion of the GIFT City's financial sector, which is expected to play a key role in India's economic growth, International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) chairman K Rajaraman said here. We also want Indian origin funds and businesses that are located in tax-free jurisdictions to return home and be part of the growing GIFT City hub, said Rajaraman, giving this update on the Ahmedabad-based city free trade zone, where ease of doing business procedures, processes and laws have become a benchmark for international standards. IFSCA is the regulatory body for the Indian special economic zones such as the GIFT City. Rajaraman said his recent delegation to Tokyo has resulted in two Japanese banks registering in the GIFT City, and more
Japan's economy slipped into a contraction in the third quarter, decreasing at an annual pace of 2.1% as consumption and investments shrank, the government reported Wednesday. Real gross domestic product, which measures the total value of a nation's products and services, fell 0.5% in the July-September period for the world's third largest economy, the Cabinet Office said. That would produce a 2.1% drop if the quarter's performance continued for a full 12 months. The downturn came after the economy grew a revised 3.7% in the first quarter and a revised 4.5% in the second quarter on an annualized basis, according to the government figures. The third quarter's performance was far worse than what had been expected, according to the financial services company ING, which had forecast an annual contraction of 0.5%. Most of the miss in the consensus forecast came from weaker-than-expected domestic demand items, such as consumer spending, business investment and inventory accumulation, Rob

A Japanese vice finance minister stepped down on Monday, amid criticism from Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's Cabinet, after admitting his company's repeated failures to pay taxes, a further setback to Kishida's unpopular government. Deputy Finance Minister Kenji Kanda, in charge of government bonds and monetary policy, is the third member of Kishida's Cabinet to resign within two months following a Cabinet shuffle in September. Kishida later told reporters that he takes responsibility for the appointment of Kanda. I must apologise to the people that a vice finance minister had to resign soon after he assumed his position," Kishida said. I'm determined to concentrate on our work more seriously, as I believe that's the only way to regain the people's trust. Kanda, a tax accountant-turned-lawmaker, admitted that land and property belonging to his company was seized by the authorities four times between 2013 and 2022 after failures to pay fixed asset taxes, in response to a weekly magazi

Top diplomats from the Group of Seven leading industrial democracies announced a unified stance on the Israel-Hamas war on Wednesday after intensive meetings in Tokyo, condemning Hamas, supporting Israel's right to self-defence and calling for humanitarian pauses to speed aid to desperate Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip. In a statement, the nations sought to balance criticism of Hamas' attacks against Israel and a push for urgent action to help civilians in the besieged Palestinian enclave in need of food, water, medical care and shelter. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and foreign ministers from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Italy emphasised that they support humanitarian pauses to facilitate urgently needed assistance, civilian movement and release of hostages. There was also condemnation of the rise in extremist settler violence committed against Palestinians, which the ministers said is unacceptable, undermines security in the West Bank, and threatens
