Most Americans plan to watch Biden-Trump presidential debate, finds poll

Most US adults plan to watch some element of Thursday's presidential debate and many think the event will be important for the campaigns of both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research. Both men remain broadly unpopular as they prepare to face off for the first time since 2020, although Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, maintains a modest enthusiasm advantage with his base compared to Biden, the Democratic incumbent. About 6 in 10 US adults say they are extremely" or very likely to watch the debate live or in clips, or read about or listen to commentary about the performance of the candidates in the news or social media. The poll suggests tens of millions of Americans are likely to see or hear about at least part of Thursday's debate despite how unusually early it comes in the campaign season. Both Biden and Trump supporters view the debate as a major test for their ...

US elections: This week's debate important for Biden, Trump, and CNN

Joe Biden and Donald Trump won't be alone at Thursday's debate. Moderators Dana Bash and Jake Tapper of CNN will be on camera, too, and there's a lot on the line for their network as it fights for relevance in a changing media environment. CNN has hosted dozens of town halls and political forums through the years, but never a general election presidential debate, let alone one so early in a campaign. No network has. This is a huge moment for CNN, said former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno, now a media and public affairs professor at George Washington University. CNN has to reassert itself. It has to show that it led a revolution in news before and can do it again. As a television network, CNN is struggling at a time many consumers are cutting off cable and most news outlets wonder if the campaign will ignite consumer interest. Those that remain have expressed a clear preference for opinion programming. Fox News Channel has averaged 2.14 million viewers in prime time this .

Relationship between India, US is multiplicative: US envoy Garcetti

The relationship between India and the US is not just "addictive", it is "multiplicative", US envoy to India Eric Garcetti has said. Garcetti also said that the relationship between the two countries has never been so good. The Indian-American community is the most successful immigrant community in America. He made these remarks on Monday at an event on the sidelines of the SelectUSA Investment Summit, to which the largest delegation is from India. This (India US) is a relationship that isn't just additive. It's not just the US plus India. It's multiplicative. It's the United States times India, Garcetti said on the sidelines of the summit, to which the largest delegation is from India. The SelectUSA Investment Summit is the highest-profile event in the US to facilitate business investment by connecting thousands of investors, companies, economic development organisations (EDOs), and industry experts to make deals happen. Garcetti was speaking at the event wherein India's JSW Stee

Federal prosecutor clashes with judge over restricting Trump's speech

A federal prosecutor in the classified documents case of Donald Trump clashed with the judge Monday as the judge was questioning a request to bar the former president from threatening comments about law enforcement agents involved in the investigation. Special counsel Jack Smith's team is seeking to make as a condition of Trump's freedom pending trial a prohibition on remarks that could endanger agents participating in the case. Prosecutors say those restrictions are necessary after Trump falsely claimed last month that the FBI was prepared to kill him when it searched his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, for classified documents two years ago. But prosecutor David Harbach, a member of Smith's team, encountered immediate pushback from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, whose handling of the case has generated intense scrutiny. The judge questioned Harbach about how she could fashion an order that did not run afoul of Trump's First Amendment rights and whether prosecuto

Trump dwarfs Biden in latest fundraising numbers despite felony convictions

Donald Trump's campaign outraised President Joe Biden by more than USD 60 million last month, according to federal filings made public Thursday that detailed the Republican fundraising explosion sparked by Trump's felony convictions. Biden's campaign and the Democratic National Committee together raised a robust USD 85 million in May and reported USD 212 million in the bank at the end of the month. The strong showing does not include roughly USD 40 million raised by Biden and his top surrogates in recent days or a separate USD 20 million donation from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to pro-Biden groups. Still, Trump's fundraising for, for one month at least, seemed to dwarf Biden's. The Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee said it raised a jaw-dropping USD 141 million in May, including tens of millions donated immediately after Trump was convicted of 34 felonies in the New York hush money case. At the same time, billionaire Timothy Mellon, donated a ...

How Biden & Trump are preparing for next week's debate in different ways

President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades. The 81-year-old Democrat's team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden's team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family. Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process. The former president's allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they're expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage. Thursday's debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with

US approves new $360 mn arms sale to Taiwan for drones, related equipment

The Biden administration on Tuesday approved a new USD 360 million weapons sale to Taiwan, sending the island hundreds of armed drones, missile equipment and related support material, the State Department said in a statement that is sure to draw condemnation from China. The announcement was not unexpected but it comes at a time of high tension between Washington and Beijing, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to consolidate by force if necessary. The sale includes 291 Altius-600M systems, which are unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, with warheads. It also includes 720 Switchblade drones known as extended-range loitering munitions, the State Department said. It said the sale serves U.S. national, economic, and security interests by supporting the recipient's continuing efforts to modernize its armed forces and to maintain a credible defensive capability. It will help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, milita

Biden to do what is best for Americans: White House on Tibet policy bill

US President Joe Biden is going to take a decision that he thinks is in the best interest of the United States, the White House has said, after China warned of "resolute measures" if the Tibet policy bill is signed into law. The US Congress passed this month a legislation, the Resolve Tibet Act, calling for a peaceful resolution of the dispute over the status and governance of Tibet. It also calls on Beijing to resume dialogue with the Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. "The President is going to do what he thinks is best on behalf of the American people, that's what I can tell you," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Tuesday when asked about China's warning. The Resolve Tibet Act is a bipartisan bill to enhance US support for Tibet and promote dialogue between the People's Republic of China and the Dalai Lama toward a peaceful resolution of the long-standing dispute between Tibet and China. The Act enhances US suppor
