Karnataka govt plans to produce, sell gold coins with state emblem

The Karnataka government is planning to open jewellery retail outlets and promote the yellow metal with 'Brand Karnataka' image. The government is also planning to produce and sell gold coins with state emblem 'Gandaberunda' (mythical two-headed bird) embedded in them, and aiming to partner with private jewellers. "Gold bars will also be sold in the retail outlets. The state government is planning to produce gold jewellery on the lines of Mysore Silks and Mysore Sandalwood Soaps which have huge market and reputation among customers," Minister for Mines & Geology Murugesh R Nirani. He was speaking to reporters after a meeting with Jewellers Association and jewellery designers here. "This landmark initiative will help government generate more revenue and employment opportunities. Karnataka Minister Jarkiholi resigns over sexual harassment allegations

Karnataka Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi on Wednesday sent his resignation letter to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa following allegations of sexual harassment against him. The development comes a day after purported video clips showing Jarkiholi getting intimate with an unidentified woman, were widely aired by Kannada news channels. "The allegations against me are far from the truth, it has to be investigated at the earliest. Though I'm confident about my innocence, taking moral responsibility I'm resigning my position as the cabinet Minister. I request you to accept it," Jarkiholi said in the letter to the Chief Minister. According to sources, Jarkiholi tendered his resignation after directions from the party high command. Yediyurappa likely to allocate portfolios to new ministers January 21

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Tuesday indicated that he will allocate portfolios to seven newly inducted Ministers into his cabinet on January 21. Speculations are rife that the Chief Minister may reallocate portfolios to certain other Ministers in the cabinet whose strength is now 33. "I will announce (portfolios) on Thursday. I will hold a consultation with everyone tomorrow and announce on Thursday," Yediyurappa told reporters in response to a question. Ending a long wait, Yediyurappa had expanded his 17- month old cabinet on January 13, by inducting seven ministers as he also dropped Excise Minister H Nagesh from the ministry.
