Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot Tuesday claimed most of the DTC buses were running normally despite a strike called by contractual workers. He said some of the employees were resorting to violence, but the DTC Contractual Workers Union denied the allegations. The strike under the banner of the union entered ninth day Tuesday with five members of the union sitting on a hunger strike at the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) headquarters here. Harried bus commuters faced hardships in reaching their destination on Monday as contractual and permanent employees of the Delhi Transport Corporation went on strike despite imposition of Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) by the government. The DTC Contractual Employees Union claimed 60 per cent of buses did not ply due to their strike. But the DTC has put the number substantially lower. A senior DTC officer said out of nearly 3,600 buses, only about 300 did not leave the depots, and services were largely unaffected. The commuters, however, complained of overcrowded buses and delays. Commuters were seen at many bus stands in large numbers due to decreased frequency of buses. "I am waiting for a bus to Manglapuri for the past one hour. Commuters depending on public transport buses may face hardship as unions of DTC employees will be on strike on Monday. The DTC contractual workers are on strike under the banner of DTC Contractual Workers Union since last Monday, demanding restoration of their original wages that were slashed by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) after a court order. The DTC Workers Unity Centre too has given a call of strike on Monday. Meanwhile, the DTC in a press statement said, "The Delhi government restored the minimum wage rates which were prevailing before August 4, 2018, of contractual employees and withdrew the orders for reducing the minimum wage." The deduction in wages made for the intervening period from August 4 till October 31 will be credited to the accounts of the personnel by the end of this month, it said. Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das Sunday called upon Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi to set up 'Baal Panchayat Samiti' across the state with the state government's support. Central and state government employees protested here Sunday, demanding restoration of the old pension scheme. Hundreds of employees staged a dharna outside the Hamirpur office of local MP Anurag Thakur and raised slogans against the new pension scheme. The employees said if the old scheme was not restored then they would be compelled to launch a nation-wide stir. Bikram Singh Rana, a national-level leader of the employees association, alleged the new scheme was launched to help big companies and not for the benefit of the employees and that all employees were against it. The employees demanded all parties declare in their manifestos that the old pension scheme would be reverted back to. Senior BJP leader Prem Kumar Dhumal, who was in Hamirpur during the dharna, addressed the employees and assured them that he would take up their issue with the central and state governments. The Delhi High Court has sought response of the city government on an NGO's plea seeking implementation of the court's previous judgement on prevention and elimination of child labour. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao was hearing an application by NGO 'Bachpan Bachao Andolan' (BBA) and associate organisation 'Save the Childhood Foundation'. The court asked the Delhi government to respond and listed the matter for further hearing on November 16. The court adjourned till November 16, the proceedings in a revision petition pending before a trial court relating to discharge of accused in a 2010 case of child labour, criminal intimidation, obstructing public servant from performing duty and assaulting him. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal has imposed Essential Service Maintenance Act which will prohibit Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) workers from agitating for the next six months. Baijal, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him under Section 3 read with 4A of Haryana Essential Service Maintenance Act 1974 (Haryana Act No.40 of 1974) as extended to NCT of Delhi has declared the DTC services as Essential Services and prohibits strike agitation by contractual employees. The Odisha government on Thursday approved four different proposals envisaging investment of Rs 339.27 crore and employment opportunities for 1,354 people in the state. The proposals were approved at the State Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA) meeting chaired by Chief Secretary A P Padhi. The investment proposals are for different sectors like downstream industries in metals, logistics and tourism.
