There are millions of informal workers across growing cities of India, Africa, Latin America and Asia which represent around 80 per cent of the urban workforce, and nearly half of non-agricultural GDP, says a report. According to WRI Cities report on the urban informal workforce and economy written in collaboration with Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO), with the growing number of informal workers in cities, more inclusive approaches are needed to create better cities for all. "Informal workers from street vendors and waste pickers to home-based workers that manufacture garments and other goods represent 50 to 80 per cent of urban employment worldwide and generate up to half of non-agricultural GDP," the World Resources Institute report said. The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis today said stringent action would be taken against civic bodies which who do not pay increased salaries to sanitation workers. "It has come to our notice that sanitation workers were not paid increased salaries by Corporations, Municipalities and panchayats and a portion of the amount was swindled by contractors," Commission member Jagadish Hiremani told reporters here. He said stringent action would be taken against those responsible. Hiremani said the commission has recommended to the Government that sanitation workers be appointed in the ratio of 500:1. Hiremani, who was here to inspect progress on a survey on human waste collection, said that depending on the success of a model in Kerala, where robots are used for the purpose, the Centre would be requested to replicate it in other parts of the country.

Indian IT services giant Wipro is localising more in the US and more than half of its workforce in the country now consists of locals, the company's Chief Strategy Officer Rishad Premji said asserting that the firm is very committed to the US market. Premji, who is Member of the Board at Wipro, said Wipro currently has a workforce of over 14,000 employees in the US and 58 per cent of those are locals. Under the Donald Trump administration, there is heightened scrutiny of the H1B work visa programme, which several lawmakers allege is being abused to replace Americans with foreign workers. Kairana bypoll: Holiday for Haryana govt employees who are registered voters
The Haryana government has declared a paid holiday tomorrow for its employees, who are registered voters in western Uttar Pradesh's Kairana, where Lok Sabha bye-election will be held tomorrow. The BJP dispensation in the state has granted casual leave (paid) to all such employees working in government offices, educational institutes, boards and corporations, according to an official statement. The decision was taken in accordance with section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, it said.
Sitapur: Govt employees asked to take selfies in front of toilets
Sitapur District Magistrate has taken the Swacch Bharat mission to another level by issuing an order, asking all government employees to submit a picture of them posing in front of the toilet at their home.The employees will also have to submit a certificate proof of their respective toilets to ensure that every household has a toilet built.The step has been taken by the District Magistrate in a bid to make the district free from open defecation.The order also stated that the salary for the month of May would be stalled if the order was not abided by.The order has come with a warning which states that "Salary for May month may be stalled if you failed to obey".

Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today said her Tamil Nadu counterpart Banwarilal Purohit had accepted her invite to address officers here on 'regional challenges in security, environment and skills required for enhanced employment generation.' She tweeted this after calling on Purhoit at Chennai today en route to the union territory from Tirupati. Maha created 8L jobs in 7 months in organised sector: EPFO
Maharashtra has seen the creation of over eight lakh jobs in the organised sector in the last seven months, the highest in the country, a statement from the Chief Minister's Office today said. "The country has seen creation of 39.36 lakh jobs in organised sector during the period September 2017 to March 2018. Maharashtra has bagged the first position by creating 8,17,302 employment opportunities in this sector," the CMO statement said. The statistics, released by the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) on May 21, 2018, placed Maharashtra in the first rank among the six leading states. As per EPFO statistics, Maharashtra created 8,17,301 jobs followed by Tamil Nadu with 4,65,319 jobs. Gujarat stood third with 3,92,954 getting jobs. Haryana with 3,25,379, Karnataka with 2,93,779 and Delhi with 2,76,877 jobs stood at fourth, fifth and sixth ranks. Rescinding of H-4 visa work permit in final stages: Trump admin tells court
The move to rescind work authorisation to certain categories of H-4 visa holders is in final stages, the Trump administration has told a US court, a decision that could hit tens of thousands of Indians. H-4 visas are issued to the spouses of H-1B visa holders, a significantly large number of whom are high-skilled professionals from India. The Trump administration is planning to end the Obama-era rule allowing spouses of H1-B visa holders to work legally in the US, a move that could have a devastating impact on more than 70,000 H-4 visa holders who have work permits. The proposed rule is currently in final clearance, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told a federal court in a status update. The Trump administration yesterday told the court that once the proposal is cleared through the DHS, it will be sent to the Office of Management and Budget for review under Executive Order for regulatory and planning review. Conservancy workers sacked over 'spelling error' protest
Conservancy workers sacked by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as their names were misspelt in documents submitted to the Supreme Court that sought permanent status for their jobs, today held a protest against the civic body's decision. They were joined at Azad Maidan, the protest venue, by conservancy workers from Thane and Navi Mumbai municipal corporations who have been dismissed for similar reasons. The BMC made some of these workers permanent nine months ago after the Courts order but later found discrepancies in spellings of some names in documents submitted to the SC and therefore removed the workers from the service, the workers union claimed. The workers have accused the BMC of not following due process while terminating their services. The 16-day long strike by sanitation workers in Haryana was today called off after the state government conceded to most of the demands including hike in salary and allowances. "The agitating Safai and sewer karamcharis in Haryana have decided to call off their strike," Haryana Urban Local Bodies Minister, Kavita Jain told reporters here. Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Krishan Kumar Bedi, and Minister of State for Cooperation, Manish Grover, also jointly addressed a press conference along with Jain after a meeting with office-bearers of the Municipal Workers Union and Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, here today. Both unions announced their decision to end the strike. The Safai and sewer karamcharis of municipal bodies in Haryana will now get a lump sum salary of Rs 13,500 per month.
