Union Pon Radhakrishnan today accused the AIADMK and DMK of being responsible for allowing Sterlite to set up its copper unit here and said he had protested against it 20 years ago. He had staged a four-day fast in 1998 when the initiatives were taken for starting the factory. But then the people did not support him and said they would get employment, the Minister of State said. "It was DMK and AIADMK who are responsible for starting the sterlite company in Tuticorin. Now they are opposing," he told reporters here. The minister's comments come amid ongoing protests by locals and others against the expansion plans of the factory and demands for its closure on grounds that it allegedly caused pollution. Radhakrishnan, Minister of state for Finance and Shipping, also said various development works had been taken up in the Tuticorin Port at a cost of Rs.3,000 crore.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das today said religious places in the state are being developed as tourist attractions so that local youth can get employment. Attending a programme at Jharkhand Dham in Giridih district, Das said the state has been named after Jharkhand dham. "Religious tourist places in Jharkhand are being developed on the pattern of Tirupati so that local youth can get employment opportunities," an official release said quoting Das. The Supreme Court today junked a PIL challenging the perks, including pension and travel allowances, given to former parliamentarians. The top court agreed with the finding of the Allahabad High Court that Parliament is competent to legislate on pensions for ex-MPs and it has the power to prescribe any condition subject to which the pension may be paid. It held that the expression "allowances" of MPs occurring under Entry 73 of List I of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution was wide enough to cover the payment of pension and other benefits to the Members of Parliament or ex-MPs. "The fact that there are express references to the payment of pension in the Constitution for certain constitutional functionaries and not for others, in our opinion does not lead to the conclusion that the Constitution, by its silence, prohibits the payment of pension to those constitutional functionaries," a bench of Justice J Chelameswar and Sanjay Kishan Kaul said. A Philippine domestic worker has been hospitalised in Saudi Arabia after her employer allegedly forced her to drink household bleach, Manila's foreign ministry said today. Domestic worker Agnes Mancilla underwent emergency abdominal surgery after she was taken, unconscious, to a hospital in Saudi's southwestern Jizan city on April 2, the ministry said. "We are working closely with authorities in Jizan to make sure that justice will be given to Agnes Mancilla," the ministry said in a statement. The victim is in "serious but stable condition" in hospital and Saudi police have arrested her female employer, who has not been named, it added. Mancilla had worked in Saudi Arabia since 2016 "but was repeatedly physically abused by her lady employer" who also failed to pay her salary, the statement said, citing Edgar Badajos, the Philippine consul in the Saudi city of Jeddah. Two employees of a restaurant were allegedly assaulted by four men following an argument over the payment of bill in east Delhi's Mandawli, the police said today. Police said that the four men fired in the air before fleeing from the spot. They added that they were scanning CCTV footage to ascertain details of the incident. The two restaurant employees were injured in the attack. No arrests have been made till now.

The Centre has released Rs 2,062 crore for Telangana under the MN-NREGS, the state government said here today. State Panchayat Raj Minister Jupally Krishna Rao has directed officials to speed up works under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme during the next three months, it said in a release.
