Kenyan beauty queen sentenced to death for murder

A Kenyan court has sentenced a 24-year-old beauty queen to death for murdering her boyfriend by stabbing him 25 times, drawing criticism from rights groups who called the punishment "inhumane". Ruth Kamande, who won a prison beauty pageant while awaiting trial, slashed her partner Farid Mohammed, 24, to death in 2015 and was convicted in May. "I want young people to know that it is not cool to kill your boyfriend or girlfriend even where you feel disappointed or frustrated -- don't do it," said High Court judge Jessie Lesiit passing sentence yesterday. "Instead, it is cool to walk away and thereafter to forgive." The judge accused Kamande of "manipulative" behaviour that included accessing the victim's mobile phone as well as showing no remorse for the vicious attack which left "blood all over" the crime scene. "I think passing any other sentence than the one prescribed (death) would turn the accused into a hero," said Lesiit. Rights group Amnesty International called the sentence ...

Macron aide who struck protester to be fired

The office of French President Emmanuel Macron told AFP today that it has begun dismissal proceedings against a top security aide who violently struck a protester during a demonstration in Paris in May. A video published this week shows Alexandre Benalla manhandling and striking a demonstrator while wearing a police helmet, even though he is not an officer. Paris prosecutors also said Benalla has been detained for questioning in the assault inquiry, where he also faces charges of impersonating a police officer. Macron's office said the decision to fire Benalla was taken after "new elements" emerged in the case, which has become the most damaging scandal facing the centrist president since his election last year. A source close to the inquiry said three police officers have also been suspended on suspicion they provided Benalla with surveillance footage of the May 1 demonstration in an attempt to prove his innocence. "He is suspected of receiving material from the police he was not ...

Indonesian dictator's convicted murderer son to run for office

Indonesian dictator Suharto's youngest son -- who was convicted of ordering the assassination of a supreme court judge -- will run for a seat in parliament, his political party said today. Tommy Suharto, 56, wants to represent the eastern province of Papua, a region annexed by his father in the late Sixties following a UN-backed referendum widely criticised as a sham. Papua, on the western half of New Guinea island, has since grappled with an insurgency aimed at winning independence from Jakarta. Suharto's son will run in the April polls under his Berkarya Party, said a senior party official, who added that Papuans themselves called for him to run for office. "That's the request of the people there," Badaruddin Andi Picunang told AFP. "Mr. Suharto (Tommy Suharto's father) liberated Papua. Mr. Tommy loves Papua and he wants to represent the people." Picunang dismissed suggestions that some in Papua are not fans of Tommy Suharto or his late father's annexation of the region. "There ...

Justice Mukta Gupta issued notice to Delhi Police Crime Branch on the victim's petition, in which she also urged the court to direct the investigating agency to arrest the accused. The court listed the matter for further hearing on August 30. The plea sought a direction from the court to the probing agency to conduct a fair investigation.
