Priyadarshini Mattoo case: HC asks convict to give his edu details
The Delhi High Court today asked Santosh Kumar Singh, who is serving life term for rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo in 1996, to file complete details of his education. The court noted that Singh has been pursuing the two-year LLM programme since 2012 and asked how long would he take to complete the course. "File a detailed affidavit explaining the studies he has done in his life and in which year. For how long his education will continue? Let us be clear about his education," Justice Mukta Gupta said. Making it clear that it was not stopping him from studying, it listed the matter for hearing on May 21. The court was hearing Singh's plea seeking parole to write the LLM exams, scheduled to start from May 22. "For how long will your LLM go on? When this incident had happened, he had already completed LLB and was also pursuing some course in law at that time," it observed. Cong-JD(S) move SC agnst nomination of Anglo-Indian MLA in K'taka Assembly
The Congress-JD(S) combine today moved the Supreme Court against the decision of Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala to nominate an Anglo-Indian member to the assembly, saying it should not be done till the floor test in the House. The petition was filed in the afternoon and is likely to be heard tomorrow along with the main petition of the combine on which the apex court in the wee hours today refused to stay the swearing-in of B S Yeddyurappa as the Chief Minister of the state. In the petition, the Congress-JD(S) has sought a direction that the nomination of Anglo-Indian Vinisha Nero by the Governor be set aside till Yeddyurappa undergoes a floor test in the House to prove his majority. Karnataka case did not deserve pre-dawn hearing: Rohatgi
The rush projected by Congress for an immediate hearing in the Karnataka case was in no way akin to the life and death issue witnessed in 2015 when the Supreme Court had held a historic pre-dawn hearing, hours before Mumbai blast convict Yakub Memon was to be hanged, a top lawyer said. A BJP worker from Mira Bhayander in the district was arrested for allegedly extorting Rs 5 lakh from a woman, police said today. The accused, Munaf Patel, is a real estate agent. He was arrested last night following a complaint lodged by the woman, senior police inspector of Naya Nagar police station Balaji Pandhare said. According to the complaint lodged by the woman, a 56-year-old widow, she had paid Rs 20 lakh to a developer in 2010 to buy a flat in his housing project. "However, since the developer neither gave possession of the flat to her, nor returned the money, she sought Patel's help. He agreed to help her," the police said quoting the complaint. An Indian man in Dubai has gone on trial for allegedly molesting a five-year-old Iranian girl twice, according to a media report. A 34-year-old Indian-origin woman pharmacist was found murdered in her home in northern England's Middlesborough town and the British police are hunting for the killer, police said today. SC directs J&K Police to probe Kathua witnesses in front of family
The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Jammu and Kashmir police to interrogate witnesses from a visible distance in the Kathua case.The top court also directed probe should happen in presence of their family members. SC reserves order on finalisation of Cauvery management scheme
The Supreme Court today reserved its order on finalisation of the Cauvery management scheme which will deal with the smooth distribution of water among four southern riparian states. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it will consider the suggestions given by all stakeholders while finalising the Cauvery scheme. "We will pronounce the order tomorrow. If that is not possible, then we will pass the order on May 22 or 23," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said. NCLAT admits Renaissance Steel plea against Vedanta bid on Electrosteel
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) today admitted the petition of Renaissance Steel challenging Vedanta's bid for debt ridden Electrosteel. A two member bench of the tribunal headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya admitted the plea and directed to list the matter on May 28. Renaissance Steel's resolution application was rejected by the the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of Electrosteel Steels. Electrosteel Steels owes lenders more than Rs 13,000 crore, of which about Rs 5,000 crore is to State Bank of India alone. Two killed as car catches fire
Two persons were killed when their car caught fire after ramming into a roadside bridge in Rajasthan's Udaipur district, police said today. The car going to Vadodara from Pindwara rammed into the bridge near Mokela village last night. While one unidentified passenger was charred to death, driver Mukesh Jangid (21) died due to severe burn injuries and shock, assistant sub-inspector Narayan Singh said. Minor girl raped by housing society security guard; 3 booked
The police has registered offences against three persons, including the security guard of a housing society, for allegedly abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl, an official said today. According to the complaint, the victim went out of her house at Khambalpada in Dombivili area here on the night of May 15 to get medicine as she was suffering from stomachache, a Thane police spokesperson said. While the girl was on her way back home, the 25-year-old security guard, who had earlier worked in the locality and was known to the victim, and two other men caught hold of her. They placed a cloth laced with chloroform on her nose and mouth following which she fell unconscious, the official said. The three men then took the girl in a vehicle to an isolated place behind a slum area in Dombivili where the security guard allegedly raped her while the other two threatened her with dire consequences, the police said.
