PCB set to ban Nasir Jamshed on spot-fixing charges

Pakistan's discarded Test opener Nasir Jamshed faces the prospect of ban in absentia for his alleged role in the Pakistan Super League spot-fixing scandal if he doesn't respond to the charge sheet filed against him by the PCB on May 18. The PCB filed a chargesheet against Nasir, 28, last week with the anti-corruption tribunal containing six allegations against the opener who resides in the United Kingdom now. Nasir has until May 18 to file a reply. If there is no reply from him, the tribunal has the authority to announce its verdict in the case in 40 days, PCB lawyer, Tafazzul Rizvi told this correspondent. The newly constituted tribunal headed by Justice (retd) Fazal Mian Chohan held a hearing last week in which the PCB filed its charge sheet against Nasir. But instead of his senior lawyer, two junior lawyers turned up to represent Nasir but were not allowed to proceed by the judge after they failed to produce the power of attorney. 4 arrested for looting truck

Four men, including the driver, were arrested for allegedly looting a truck carrying copper worth Rs 80 lakh, police said today. The truck with goods was robbed at knife point by four armed robbers at Kirti Nagar on May 12. The driver of the truck, Ram Raj, had alleged that he was hit on the head and abandoned in the forest area of Narela, the police said. The truck was on its way to deliver the metal in Zakhira in Delhi. It was found that the driver was involved in conspiring with three others, including his brother, in carrying out the robbery. Raj's accomplices, identified as Manoj (25), Vishal (25) and Ajay (35), had even inflicted injuries on Raj's head. The driver told police that he was not aware about where the truck had been taken. Subsequently, the police tracked down the three accused in Sonipat and precious copper metal worth Rs 80 lakh was recovered, the police said. 2 held for killing Guj lawyer, mastermind flees to Dubai: Cop

Two people were today arrested from the Mumbai metropolitan region for the killing of a senior lawyer in Jamnagar last month, police said. Senior lawyer, Kirit Joshi, was stabbed to death by two motorcycle-borne assailants near Town hall area of Jamnagar on the night of April 28. "We have arrested Simon Devinadan (42), a resident of Vasai-East and his accomplice, Ajay Mehta (38), a resident of Andheri-West for the crime. They had taken a contract to kill Joshi from Jayesh Ranparia, who fled to Dubai a week before the incident," said Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, J K Bhatt. He said that Ranparia had hired the two accused to kill Joshi since the latter was appearing as advocate in four to five cases of land grabbing lodged against Ranparia. "Jayesh Ranparia has at least 27 cases against his name. He is known for grabbing land by forging documents. To settle any dispute, he used to take huge sums of money from actual land owners. Man jumps before moving train at metro station; saved by CISF personnel

A 60-year-old man allegedly attempted to kill himself today by jumping in front of a moving train at the Vidhan Sabha metro station, police said. Surendra Kumar (60) jumped in front of a Huda City Centre-bound train, but was saved by the CISF personnel, the police said, adding that the man suffered minor scratches. Kumar's son Dheeraj was informed about the incident. Dhiraj accompanied his father to the Aruna Asaf Ali Hospital, the police said. A note was recovered from the site, in which Kumar had cited domestic issues as the reason for his act, they added.

Sohrabuddin Sheikh case: 2 more witnesses turn hostile

Two more prosecution witnesses in the cases of encounters of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and Tulsiram Prajapati today turned hostile before a special CBI court here, taking the number of such witnesses to 57. The two witnesses, Jagdish Prajapati and Girish Patel, deposed before the special judge S J Sharma. Jagdish Prajapati, who used to work as a phone operator at a government guest house in Ahmedabad, had told the CBI that he had handed over the guest register, pertaining to the period between November 13, 2006 to December 16, 2006, to the investigating agency. He had stated that Himmat Singh, Abdul Rehman, Yudhveer Kartar, Dalpati Singh, Tej Singh and Budhnarayan, all Rajasthan police officials, had stayed at the guest house on November 28, 2006, and entry of their stay was mentioned in the register. Woman's body found in central Delhi

The body of an unidentified woman, in her 20s, was found near Shanti Van area in central Delhi this morning, police said. The police were informed that a woman, with head injuries, was lying unconscious. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared brought dead, they added. The woman is yet to be identified. It is suspected that she was hit with a stone on her head and effort was also made to distort her face, the police said. It is suspected that the woman was a vagabond and lived nearby. Police are questioning other vagabonds in the area to get some clue about the killer and also to establish the identity of the woman. It has been suspected that she was killed at night and her body was dumped there.

HC directs U'khand to frame rules to protect witnesses

Terming witnesses an integral part of administration of justice, Uttarakhand High Court today told the state government to frame rules within six months to punish people who "induce" a witness to give false statement in court. It also said that witnesses should be paid allowance for travelling and lodging by the state government from the state exchequer. Delivering a judgement in a case, a division bench of Justices Rajiv Sharma and Alok Singh observed that witnesses are an integral part of administration of justice and they deserve to be protected. It directed the state government to frame rules under Uttarakhand Police Act, 2007 within six months and make suitable amendment in the IPC to punish those who "induce" any witness to give false statement. The court observed that witnesses are not adequately compensated for the amount of money they spend on a case and their dignity should be maintained. NSA to be slapped on TN man who talked about plot to kill Modi

Police probing a claim by a man here of an alleged plot to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the National Security Act (NSA) would be slapped on him after investigations suggested there was indeed such a plan to create communal tension. City Police Commissioner K Periaiah signed the order to detain Mohammed Rafiq, arrested last month over the claim, under the NSA and the orders would be served on him tomorrow, police said. The decision to invoke the NSA was taken after a detailed inquiry and searches in the house of Rafiq, a convict in the 1998 bomb blast case who had completed his jail term. POCSO accused tries to kill himself on Guj court premises

A man being tried under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act today tried to kill himself on the premises of the sessions court here in Gujarat alleging that his petition seeking transfer of the case to another judge was not being taken up, police said. The accused Daniel Gawai tried to set himself on fire with kerosene he was carrying with him on the premises of the court, a police official said. However, he was overpowered by police personnel before he could set himself on fire, he said. "Gawai had threatened on Saturday that he would kill himself outside the court today," he said. His case is being heard by POCSO judge P C Raval. He had threatened to take the extreme step in a letter marked to chief justices of the Gujarat high court and the supreme court as well as President.

Gold worth Rs 66.7 lakh seized at Chennai airport in two days

Over two kg gold worth Rs 66.7 lakh have been seized at the airport here in the last two days. Customs department officials today intercepted four passengers, who arrived from Gulf countries, and seized 1,432 grams of gold worth Rs 44.70 lakh that was in their checked-in baggage, a customs release said today. In the other case, officials recovered 'four rectangular shaped items' wrapped with black adhesive tape which were lying unattended near the conveyor belt, yesterday. Investigations revealed that 12 gold cut bits of 24 karat purity, weighing 700 grams and worth Rs 22 lakh, were concealed in them, the release said.

NIA files charge sheets against 15 for killing pastor, RSS leader

The NIA today filed two charge sheets against 15 people, including a few Khalistani terrorists, for killing a pastor and a RSS leader in Ludhiana last year. In its charge sheets, filed in a special court in Mohali, the probe agency said the conspiracy to kill these two persons had its foot-prints in several countries including, Pakistan, Australia, France, Italy, the UK and the UAE. It has named Harmeet Singh, Gurjinder Singh, Gursharanbir Singh, Gurjant Singh Dhillon -- who are suspected to be in Pakistan, Italy, the UK and Australia respectively -- in the charge sheets filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act, 1959. An All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen lawmaker and his followers allegedly beat up a 35-year-old man, accused of attempting to rape a minor girl, at a police station here even as an inquiry has been launched into the incident, police said today. 1984 anti-Sikh riots: Sajjan Kumar to undergo polygraph test

A Delhi court today issued directions for conducting a lie detector test on Congress leader Sajjan Kumar on May 30 in connection with two 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases after he gave his consent for the same. Metropolitan Magistrate Santosh Kumar Singh directed the Director of Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Lodhi Road, to conduct a polygraph test on Kumar, who was earlier granted anticipatory bail in the cases, and disposed of the application of the special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Supreme Court. SC to hear plea to lodg complaint agnst lawyers involved in impeachment move

The Supreme Court today agreed to list for hearing a plea seeking registration of a criminal complaint against some lawyers for moving impeachment notice against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra. A bench comprising the CJI and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud considered the submission of lawyer M L Sharma that his PIL be listed for urgent hearing during the week. Sharma, in his PIL, has made Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu and lawyers -- Prashant Bhushan, Kamini Jaiswal, Kapil Sibal, KTS Tulsi and A M Singhvi -- as party to the his PIL.
