Minor raped, found in serious condition

A seven-year-old girl was raped by an unidentified person and found in a serious condition in Rausar Kothi village here, police said. The girl had gone to attend a wedding in the village and was sleeping with other children when she was picked up by the accused and taken to a secluded spot and raped, Circle Officer (City), Sumit Shukla said today. The girl was later left at the door in an unconscious state and was found there this morning, the CO said, adding that she has been admitted in a hospital in a serious condition. A case has been registered and investigations are on, the CO added.

WB pre-rural poll violence: TMC strongman charged with murder

Trinamool Congress strongman Arabul Islam, arrested in connection with the killing of an independent candidate's supporter in South 24 Parganas district ahead of the May 14 panchayat polls in West Bengal, will be produced in court today, police said. Hafizul Islam Mollah, 25, was hit by a bullet on his chest when he along with other supporters was taking part in a procession from Kashipur to Machhibhanga yesterday. Arabul was arrested late last night on the order of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also in charge of the state's Home Department. A senior police officer said Arabul has been booked for murder and will be produced at a court here this afternoon. Six arrested for ATM fraud

With the arrest of six people, two of them hailing from Uttar Pradesh, the city police claimed to have busted an ATM card racket that targeted bank customers and siphoned off money from their accounts. Among the arrested is a man who claimed to work as a film production manager, police said. Addressing a news conference last evening, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mukund Hatote said acting on a tip-off, a Crime Branch team laid a trap at Naigaon on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on May 10 and arrested the accused. Upon interrogation of the arrested persons, it was revealed they engaged in hacking ATM machines, stealing PIN codes and siphoning off money from accounts of bank customers, he said. They kept a watch at ATM centres, and under the pretext of helping customers wanting to withdraw money, stole their PIN codes which they later fraudulently used to take out cash, Hatote said. Suspected smuggler arrested with 25 kg poppy in Udhampur

A suspected narcotics smuggler was arrested and 25 kg of poppy was seized from his possession in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, police said today. Based on a tip-off, a police party intercepted a truck on highway at Jakhani belt last evening, a police officer said today. During a search of the vehicle, 25 kg poppy was seized, he said, adding that the inter-state narcotics smuggler, Mohmmad Ashraf, of Punjab's Malerkote was arrested. The vehicle was also seized, he said. A case has been registered at the Udhampur Police Station and further investigation was on, the officer said.

Police inspector suspended for thrashing elderly woman

The inspector-in-charge (IIC) of a police station in Puri district was placed under suspension for allegedly thrashing an elderly woman, officials said. "Pending drawal of disciplinary proceeding, Mrutunjay Swain, IIC Nimapara police station is placed under suspension with immediate effect for his gross misconduct in assaulting a 75-year-old woman Basanti Palata and her daughter-in-law in the premises of the police station which is unbecoming of a police officer," the Director General of Police R P Sharma ordered yesterday. Swain has denied the allegations levelled against him. The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) yesterday had asked the IGP (Central Range) to furnish a report within two weeks on alleged thrashing of the elderly woman. The OHRC's acting chairperson Justice B K Mishra gave this direction while taking cognizance of the allegations made by one Prasanna Dash, advocate and president, Sachetan Nagarik Manch of Tiadi Sahi, Puri.

Pak CJ condemns 'ethnic cleansing' of Hazaras

Pakistan's Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has condemned the targetted attacks on members of the minority Hazara community in Balochistan, describing it as a clear case of "ethnic cleansing".Leading a two-judge bench comprising of Justice Ijazul Ahsan and himself at the Supreme Court's Quetta Registry, Chief Justice Nisar, taking suo moto notice of the attacks, said, "For me, the targetted killing of the Hazara community in Quetta is ethnic cleansing and that is why I had to take suo motu notice. Student dies of heart attack after stopped from taking exam

A 20-year-old student allegedly died due to a heart attack here on Friday after he was not allowed to take the examination for over non-payment of fees.The student, identified as Mohanlal, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.Agitated relatives and neighbours protested and blocked a road following the incident and demanded that an action should be taken against the college."For a mere amount of Rs 300, he was not allowed to take the examination. He could not bear the thought of his career being ruined and succumbed to death," a relative of the deceased said.Mohanlal, who was pursuing BCA from Ramkrishna College, had already deposited Rs 25,700. Since he could not pay Rs 300, what was left of the fee to be deposited, he was not given his admit card."Till the time the district administration does not take action against the college, we will not stop protesting," the protesters said.

JNU student disappearance case: CBI files status report in Delhi HC

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a status report and mobile forensic report in Delhi High Court in connection with the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed missing case.The court has fixed July 12 as the next date of hearing.Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year student of M.Sc Biotechnology at JNU, went missing after an alleged brawl with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP) at Mahi-Mandvi Hostel on October 15, 2016.An FIR was registered on 16 October 2016 for kidnapping and wrongful confinement of Najeeb at the Vasant Kunj police station based on the complaint of Najeeb's parents.Extensive searches by the Delhi police turned up nothing. Two Delhi Police personnel suspended

Delhi Police has suspended two officers for laxity and not taking necessary action over molestation complaint made by a woman.Head Constable Chander Bhan and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shibu have been suspended as they did not take prompt action over the complaint of the woman, who was allegedly molested by a rickshaw puller in New Delhi's Paharganj on Thursday.She, according to the complaint, contacted the duty officer, posted at New Delhi Railway Station, but no one came to her rescue when the miscreant misbehaved outside the station.Meanwhile, the accused, identified as Khurshid, has been arrested by the police, and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Head constable found dead inside barracks

A head constable was found dead inside the barracks of northwest Delhi's Maurya Enclave police station today,police said. The policeman,Rakesh,was working as an operator with station house officer of the Maurya Enclave police station. He was found unconscious inside the barracks and was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police added. They said no foul play was found but they were awaiting his post-mortem report to reach any conclusion.

Woman dies after falling from building in west Delhi

A 26-year-old woman died today after falling from the third floor of a building in west Delhi's Moti Nagar area, police said. Her mother alleged that she was being harassed by her brothers-in-law, they added. Police said that they have registered a case and are probing the allegations and no arrests have been made so far in the case.

Sohrabuddin encounter case: two more witnesses turn hostile

Two more prosecution witnesses in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh and Tulsiram Prajapati alleged fake encounters case today turned hostile before a special CBI court here, taking the number of such witnesses to 55. Deputy Superintendent of Police Himmat Singh and constable Kanti Lal, both of the Rajasthan police, deposed before the special judge S J Sharma here today. Kanti Lal, in his statement to the CBI, had said that he, with some other policemen, had taken Prajapati to an Ahmedabad court on November 27, 2006, a month before Prajapati's death in an 'encounter'. Prajapati was lodged in the Udaipur Central Jail then. However, in the court today, Kanti Lal maintained that he had taken Prajapati to Ahmedabad on November 26 and not 27. Following which, CBI lawyer B P Raju declared him as hostile. Man arrested for killing brother's wife

A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his brother's wife by hitting her with a spade in Masuri town, police said today. Assistant superintendent of police (Masuri area) Aparna Gautama told that Aarif and his younger brother Javed had an altercation over the issue of walkway of their joint house in Naahal village last night. They engaged in a heated argument, following which Aarif's wife intervened in the matter, upon which Javed became furious and allegedly hit her.After killing her, he fled away from the house, the ASP said. An FIR has been lodged against Javed, Sazid and one unidentified person. Javed has been arrested, while two others are still at large, Gautama added.

Charas worth Rs two crore seized in Bihar; one arrested

The Sashastra Seema Bal today arrested a man in East Champaran district and seized 20 kg of charas worth Rs 2 crore in the international market from his possession, an SSB official said. Bihari Lal (55), a resident of Hasanpur village in East Champaran district, was caught by SSB personnel from the vicinity of a railway station here when he was about to board a train to Delhi, Commandant of SSB's 47th Battalion Sonam Chering said. The contraband was kept in 20 packets, each of which contained a kilogramme of charas. The Commandant said Lal has known to be involved in drug peddling for long and he had recently released from Tihar Jail in Delhi where he had been lodged in connection with a drug related case. The accused has been handed over to the Narcotics Control Bureau.

Body of man found dead with throat slit in southeast Delhi

The body of a 28-year-old man with his throat slit was today found in southeast Delhi's Jasola area, police said. The deceased, Shahbaz, was a resident of Okhla and used to work at a customer care centre of a telecom company, they added. His family members claimed that he had received his salary last night and did not return home. They had informed police subsequently. Today, they were informed about his body being found with his throat slit, police said. They said that they are investigating various angles, including robbery and personal enmity.

Man kills live-in partner in Ghaziabad

A 45-year-old woman was strangled to death by her live-in partner at his residence in Nehru Garden colony here, police said today. The incident took place last night when Renu had a heated argument with Pankaj Joshi after she told him to leave his family and live with her permanently, they said. Renu, who hailed from Mumbai, came in contact with Joshi, an eatery owner, through Facebook. After a month of their friendship, Renu left her husband and started living with Joshi in Ghaiabad, SP City Akash Tomar said. "When Joshi refused to accede to her demands, the two had heated a argument. In a fit of anger, Joshi strangled her to death with her stole," Tomar said. Man arrested for raping 8-month-old girl in Alwar

The Rajasthan Police on Friday arrested a man for allegedly raping an eight-month-old girl in Alwar's Harsana village.The child was last seen with the neighbour, who carried her saying that he wanted to spend some time with her.
