Congress said on Thursday that the Supreme Court's dismissal of petitions seeking Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into Justice Loya's death case marks a sad day in India's history.Addressing the media, Congress leader Randeep S Surjewala said, "The verdict marks a sad day in India's history. The Supreme Court verdict has left many questions unanswered. J-K: Bid to smuggle bovines foiled, 23 animals rescued

The police arrested two persons for allegedly trying to smuggle 23 bovines to Kashmir valley in Rajouri district. Police intercepted four vehicles carrying the animals in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district last night, a police officer said today. While two drivers were arrested and their vehicles seized, the two other drivers managed to flee, leaving their vehicles behind, he said, adding that 23 bovines were rescued. The intercepted vehicles were seized and a case was registered in this connection, the officer said.

48 MP, MLAs have declared cases of crime against women: ADR

At least 48 MPs and MLAs have declared cases related to crime against women, with BJP having the highest number of such politicans at 12, a report said today amid a nation-wide outrage over rape incidents, including in UP's Unnao where a ruling party lawmaker is an accused. "Out of 1,580 (33 per cent) MPs/MLAs analysed with declared criminal cases, 48 have declared cases related to crime against women," as per the report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). This includes 45 MLAs and 3 MPs, who have declared cases of crime against women such as charges related to assault of woman with intent to outrage her modesty, kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her to marriage, rape, domestic violence and trafficking, the Delhi-based think-tank said. The Supreme Court order rejecting the plea for a probe into the death of Judge B H Loya has sent out a clear message that the judiciary cannot be "misled" by allegations based on political vendetta, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said today. Police raid gambling den, 54 held

A police team today conducted a raid at a gambling den in Nimbol village near here and arrested as many as 54 people from the spot, an official said. A police team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nilotpal recovered cash, vehicles and mobile phones collectively worth nearly Rs 70 lakh. According to the ASP, the raid was conducted in the wee hours. "During the raid, we arrested 54 perople and recovered cash worth Rs 9 lakh, 24 motorcycles worth around Rs 8 lakh, 11 four-wheelers worth around Rs 51 lakh and 51 cell phones worth about Rs 1.5 lakh, collectively valued at nearly Rs 70 lakh," Nilotpal said. In addition to all this, liquor worth Rs 1,400 was also seized from the house, where the illegal activities were on, he added. Kejriwal's former advisor V K Jain questioned

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's former advisor V K Jain is being questioned today in the case of alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. Jain had been served a notice last week for questioning for which he arrived at Civil Lines police station this afternoon. His questioning is still underway, a senior police officer said. Jain is being questioned in the case of alleged assault on Delhi chief secretary in February this year. In March, he had resigned as Kejriwal's advisor citing personal reasons and family commitment. Rs 25 lakh unearthed from suspended SSP's in-laws' locker

Sleuths of the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) today unearthed Rs 25 lakh cash from a bank locker held by the in-laws of suspended senior superintendent of police, Vivek Kumar, from Muzzafarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. The locker was located in Vijaya Bank and the vigilance sleuths had found its keys during a raid on Kumar's in-laws' residence in Muzaffarnagar. The vigilance team, which froze six lockers held by Kumar and his family members, had earlier recovered huge cash, jewellery and property documents worth Rs 2.15 crore from two lockers. "The team (vigilance) has found Rs 25 lakh cash from the third locker of Vijaya Bank branch in Muzaffarnagar. Acid attack on 3 girls in Pak by uncle for rejecting marriage proposal

Three girls, including a sister duo, in Pakistan's Punjab province suffered burn injuries in an acid attack today when they were allegedly attacked by the sisters' uncle for rejecting a marriage proposal, according to media reports. Man tries to abduct minor girl, she escapes

A man today allegedly tried to abduct a minor girl but she managed to escape in the Bajaj Nagar area here, police said. The incident occurred this morning when the girl, aged around 8-9 years, had gone to buy milk from a dairy located close to her house near Gopalpura bypass.
