J-K Governor accepts resignations of 2 BJP ministers

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra today accepted the resignations of the two BJP ministers, who had participated in a rally in support of the people arrested in connection with the rape-and-murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district. A Raj Bhavan communication said the governor, on the advice of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, accepted the resignations of Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga. Mehbooba, who received the resignations of the two ministers from state BJP chief Sat Sharma yesterday, had immediately accepted and forwarded the same to the Governor for completing the procedural formalities. With these resignations, the number of ministers in the state government has come down to 22, including nine from the BJP. There are three vacancies in the council of ministers as the PDP had last month removed its finance minister Haseeb Drabu unceremoniously. Naroda Gam: Court concludes hearing on plea to make 2 officers accused

A special SIT court here today reserved its order on an application seeking to make former IPS officer Rahul Sharma and former investigating officer P L Mall accused in the 2002 Naroda Gam riot case. Special SIT judge M K Dave is likely to pronounce the order on May 14. Some of the accused in the case have filed an application that Sharma and Mall be made accused. Sharma, who had collected call detail records of ministers and bureaucrats during the 2002 post-Godhra riots to pinpoint their locations, didn't submit the original CD of this data to the probe agencies, while Mall failed to arrest Sharma for this "destruction of evidence", the application alleged. Sharma submitted a duplicate CD as evidence which did not contain some vital call details which would have been in favour of the accused, the accused persons' lawyer said. Allahabad: Posters prohibiting BJP men from entering homes removed

The posters prohibiting the entry of politicians and members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which were put up by the residents of Allahabad's Shivkuti Colony outside their houses, were removed on Monday.The posters were put up in the first place on April 14 in light of the alleged role of the BJP workers in increasing number of rapes and crime against women, locals informed.One of the residents of the colony, RN Yadav, told ANI, "Some five-six of us had put up the posters in protest against the BJP. Mecca Masjid blast: Victim's family demands justice

Following the exoneration of the five accused in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case, family of one of the deceased has demanded justice.Rehana Begum, the younger sister of deceased Saleem, told ANI that her brother had died in the police firing that ensued after the blast took place."This all happened due to some those who planned and executed the blast. BJP MP invites Rahul Gandhi for debate on child safety

Man strangles one-and-half-year old daughter

A 35-year-old man allegedly strangled his one and half-year old daughter to death and tried to kill his wife and another daughter near a temple in Jagtial district, police said today. Police said Nikode Ashok (35) reached the temple on Saturday last alongwith his wife and two daughters for offering prayers. He took them to a nearby forest in the night and allegedly strangled his younger daughter to death. Police said he allegedly tried to kill his wife and another daughter, aged four years, but his wife escaped in the darkness and reached her parents house. She filed a complaint with police today, police said. The body of the one and half year old child was found in the forest. Steps are on to trace Ashok, who is absconding, and his four-year-old daughter, police said.

Man held for cheating after promising MBBS seat

A man running a consultancy firm here was arrested today for allegedly cheating a person of Rs 11 lakhs after promising to procure a seat to his daughter in the MBBS course in JIPMER last year. Krishnamoorthy, hailing from Kerala, was arrested on a complaint from Sai Baba, who paid him Rs 11 lakh being part payment of Rs 25 lakhs demanded for the medical seat, police said. The balance was to be given after getting admission. However, he wound up his consultancy firm and was absconding. He filed a police complaint after waiting for nearly a year. Police laid a trap and arrested the accused, who was remanded to judicial custody by a court.

"We have not got justice," says relatives

Some victims and relatives of those killed in the Mecca Masjid bomb blast said they have not got justice and urged the state government to move the High Court against a special NIA court verdict acquitting five accused in the case. Reacting to the acquittal, Fayaz Khan, who lost his uncle and brother-in-law in the blast, said he was "upset" over the judgement. "We have not got justice...it is the responsibility of the government to move the High Court against today's judgment and see to it that all of them are punished accordingly," he said. 8 girls held captive in Vasco flat, tortured; woman arrested

In a shocking incident, at least eight girls were found confined in a flat in Goa's Vasco city, where they were allegedly subjected to torture, including branding them with a hot knife, police said today. The girls, all in the age group of six to 12 years, were also allegedly beaten up with a pipe by a 65-year-old woman who claimed to have adopted them, Vasco police station inspector Nolasco Raposo said. The police had yesterday rescued the girls from the flat, located in the Baina locality of the city, with the help of an NGO and arrested the woman, identified as Venus Habib. The trauma of the girls ended after some locals spotted one of them with injury marks on her hand during a church service on Sunday, Raposo said. Three arrested for killing petrol pump employee in Adarsh Nagar

Three men were arrested for allegedly killing a 21-year-old petrol pump employee in northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar, following a failed attempt to rob him of his cell phone, the police said today. The accused -- Vishal Sonkar (23), Nikhil Saxena (19) and Puneet alias Raju (24) -- were nabbed on the basis of a clue about their motorcycle which had green alloy wheels, they added. On April 13, Naresh was stabbed near Bharat Petroleum petrol pump, following which a case was registered. During investigation, local inquiries were made by the police team to gain clues to the identity of the accused. Following a clue about the motorcycle with green alloy wheels used by the accused, the police nabbed the three accused yesterday.

HC asks Kejriwal why can't he apologise for 'thulla' remark

The Delhi High Court today asked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal why cannot he apologise to a constable for allegedly using the slang 'thulla' for policemen, when he has been seeking pardon from others like Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Justice Anu Malhotra said if Kejriwal is apologising to others for his remarks, why can't he do the same to the police officials and settle the matter. His counsel said he would seek instructions from the chief minister on this, following which the court listed the matter for further hearing on May 29. 8 lawyers named in FIR for obstructing cops while filing charge sheet in Kathua case

Eight lawyers have been identified and named by the police in its FIR filed last week against a group of advocates who allegedly tried to prevent crime branch sleuths from filing a charge sheet against the accused in the rape and murder of a girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. The FIR was lodged against dozens of lawyers on April 10, a day after members of Bar Association, Kathua, (BAK) staged a protest and tried to obstruct the police from filing the charge sheet in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Kathua, against seven of the eight accused arrested in connection with the rape and murder case. During investigation, the role of eight lawyers has come to the fore and accordingly their names were included in the FIR, the official said adding the investigation was still ongoing and inclusion of more names cannot be ruled out.
