Suspecting that an unidentified girl, whose body was found in Surat 10 days ago with signs of rape and torture, could be from Odisha, all the superintendents of police (SPs) in the state were today asked to collect information on the missing girls in their jurisdictions. The basis of the suspicion was that a large number of people migrated from Odisha to Surat, Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma told reporters here. The body of the unidentified girl was found in Surat earlier this month and officials there suspect that the girl, who was possibly held captive, tortured and raped over a period of time, belonged to Odisha. "We have asked all the district SPs to gather information on the missing girls in their areas after receiving information on the rape and murder of a girl from the Surat police commissioner," the DGP said. A police inspector and a patwari (revenue official) were today arrested by Rajasthan's Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) while accepting bribe of Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively, an official said. Inspector Mahesh Joshi was arrested by the Pali district ACB sleuths red handed for accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000, Inspector general (ACB-Jodhpur) V.K Singh said. He said that toll booth manager Rajendra Singh had lodged a complaint with the ACB that Joshi had demanded Rs 10,000 -- each month -- from him citing law and order issues at the booth. "He had asked Rs 40,000 for the four months," the official said. In another incident, Jaipur ACB sleuths arrested patwari Sanjay Jain while taking a bribe of Rs 50,000. The Congress said today that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "backstabbed" the nation on his promise to not allow the dilution of a law that prevents atrocities on SCs and STs as his party's government in Chhattisgarh was implementing the "diluted" version of the Act. The Congress also said that if the ruling BJP was sincere towards the welfare of Dalits, it should immediately bring an ordinance to prevent the alleged dilution of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. On Friday at the inauguration of B R Ambedkar memorial in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi asserted he would not allow the Act to be diluted after the Supreme Court laid down new guidelines to prevent the law's misuse. : A 21-year-old beautician died today after allegedly "falling" from a running train in neighbouring Vikarabad district, Government Railway Police said. A Jyothi boarded a passenger train from here to reach her home after completing work yesterday but was found lying on the tracks near Mailaram railway station by her relatives at 6 a.m today, they said. Her relatives went in search of her as she did not return home from work, an investigation official told PTI. "She fell from the train and suffered head injuries," the official said adding the woman died while being shifted to a hospital here. An investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of her death, the official said adding a case of suspicious death under section 174 CrPC has been registered.

The special NIA court judge of Hyderabad K Ravinder Reddy today resigned, barely hours after acquitting the five accused in the Mecca Masjid blast case, a senior judicial officer said. Reddy handed over his resignation to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge. Reddy cited personal reasons for his resignation, and said it had nothing to do with today's judgement. In fact, he said, he was considering resigning for quite some time, the official told PTI.

A mother-son duo were today killed in an explosion while preparing crackers at Khankah locality in Saraimeer area here, the police said. Meera Devi (60) and her son Rajan (30) were killed in the explosion while preparing crackers and two others of the family were injured, they said. According to police, the injured were rushed to a hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable. Police said a case has been registered and they are probing the matter for further details.
The Delhi High Court today sought response of the NIA on a plea by Syed Shahid Yousuf, son of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen founder and internationally-wanted terrorist Syed Salahuddin, seeking bail in a terror funding case. A bench of justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta issued notice to the National Investigation Agency on the plea challenging a trial court order denying bail to Yousuf. 42-year-old Yousuf was posted as agricultural assistant in Budgam of central Kashmir when he was arrested by the NIA on October 24 last year. He is in judicial custody and his bail plea was dismissed by the trial court here on March 7. He had sought bail saying that he was not required further by the investing agency and no purpose will be served by keeping him in custody. A 50-year-old assistant sub-inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF) today allegedly shot himself dead using his service revolver in the paramilitary force's camp in Bharni village in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district, police said. "Assistant Sub-Inspector Pushpendra Bahadur Singh ended his life by shooting himself with his service revolver in his barrack in the camp of CRPF's Group Centre located in Bharni village on Bilaspur-Kota road," said Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Arif Sheikh. He said Singh's colleagues heard a gunshot from his barrack this morning, following which they rushed to the place only to find himself lying in a pool of blood. A woman in Lakhimpur Kheri district was hung from a ceiling hook and brutally thrashed for dowry by her husband, who send a video of the incident to her parents, police said today. The woman has been brought back to her parent's house here and a case registered against her husband and four others, Circle Officer (CO) Sunil Kumar Shukla said. The incident took place on Saturday and a complaint was lodged by the woman's father here yesterday, he said. In the video, the husband is seen beating his wife with a belt and threatening to continue the torture till she meets his dowry demand of Rs 50,000, the CO said. The case was registered under provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the matter is being investigated, he said.

A juvenile, who attempted to rape a four-year-old girl, was apprehended today in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The boy, a student of Class 9, had gone into hiding on Saturday after his attempt to rape the minor at her rented house was foiled by neighbours, a police official said. He had gone to deliver milk to the family and finding the girl alone tried to rape her. However, the cries of the girl attracted the attention of her neighbours who rushed to the spot. The accused fled the scene and efforts were launched to nab him, the official said. After two days' hunt, the boy was apprehended today. Police have registered a case against the accused.
