Over 100 monkeys die in a week, poisoning suspected

More than 100 monkeys have been killed in the last one week at Dabarsi village in Amroha district in Uttar Pradesh.According to the preliminary reports, it is suspected that these monkeys were poisoned. However, the residents of the village claim that the monkeys died due to 'chowmein chutney'.However the real cause of the death is yet unknown and will become clear after the post-mortem report is received.An investigation into the matter by the forest department is underway.

Man arrested for running fake Karnataka bank branch

A man has been arrested for running a fake branch of Karnataka Bank in Ballia's Mulayam Nagar in Uttar Pradesh.The Ballia police arrested Aafaq Ahmed of Badayu district, who impersonated as the branch manager and went by the name Vinod Kumar Kambali.A case has been registered, the police said."We have recovered cash worth Rs 1.37 lakh, three computers, several equipments, documents and a register in which it is written that 15 bank accounts were opened," the police added.

Bill Cosby's retrial will see Janice Dickinson testifying

Model Janice Dickinson will testify at the upcoming retrial of American comedian Bill Cosby, which is scheduled to open in April in Pennsylvania state court.Dickinson is one of as many as five "prior bad acts" witnesses, who the prosecutors are considering to use to establish that Cosby's actions related to Constand were part of a pattern and were not a one-time mistake, CNN reported.Dickinson claims she was drugged and raped by Cosby in Lake Tahoe in 1982 when she was 27. Lawyer Amal Clooney to represent detained Myanmar reporters

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney plans to represent two investigative reporters on trial in Myanmar. Clooney said today she will defend the two Reuters journalists who were arrested in December. Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were taken into custody after reporting the massacre of 10 Rohingya men and boys in Myanmar. They are charged with violating the country's Official Secrets Act and face a possible maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Clooney said it is "clear beyond doubt" that the two are innocent and should be released immediately. She said the results of the high-profile case will "tell us a lot" about Myanmar's commitment to freedom of speech and the rule of law.

Delivery man stabbed multiple times; 2 arrested

Two people were arrested for allegedly stabbing a delivery man multiple times in outer Delhi's Nihal Vihar after he failed to deliver the cell phone they ordered from a shopping portal, police said today. The accused were identified as Kamal Deep (30) and her brother Jitender Singh (34), the police said, adding they recovered Rs 40,000, a van used in the offence, a blood stained towel, a knife and shoe laces used to strangle the delivery man. The incident came to light on March 21 after a man was found lying in a pool of blood in a drain in Chander Vihar area, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) M N Tiwari said. The victim was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where he is recuperating. He told the police that he had come to deliver a cell phone worth Rs 11,000 to Kamal Deep and called her to confirm her address. She then started calling him about why he was getting delayed. Sarkozy ordered to stand trial for attempt to influence judge

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been ordered to stand trial on charges of corruption and influence peddling involving a judge from whom he sought information about an investigation, a legal source said today. Prosecutors have also recommended Sarkozy's lawyer Thierry Herzog and former judge Gilbert Azibert stand trial in the case dating back to 2014, the source said. If confirmed it would be a second trial for the rightwinger, who is set to be prosecuted over alleged illegal campaign financing for his unsuccessful re-election bid in 2012. However, Sarkozy would be expected to appeal the decision. Body of 21-yr-old DU student found

The body of a 21-year-old Delhi University student, who was allegedly kidnapped on March 22, was found in Dwarka, police said today. Police have arrested the accused -- Istiaq (25) -- who confessed to killing the student on March 22 after a tiff and said he had cooked up the kidnapping story to mislead the victim's family and the police, they added. The accused told the police that he got in touch with the victim through a dating site and had met thrice in 10 days. The victim, Ayush Nautiyal, was a student of Ram Lal Anand College in south campus. On March 22, when they met, they had a fight which got aggravated and the accused attacked Nautiyal multiple times on the head with a hammer, the police said. He had left home on March 22 at around 11 pm after informing his family that he would get late since there was a college fest. Sat phone recovered from Indian-American bizman at Bhuj

A US citizen of Indian origin was today found in possession of a satellite phone when he was about to board a flight to Mumbai from the Bhuj airport in Gujarat, officials said. Navinchandra Dimond, president and CEO of a hotel chain in the US, was stopped by the CISF personnel after they found him carrying a satellite phone without a valid license, they said. Bhuj 'A' division police of Kutch district lodged a case against Dimond under section 20 of the Indian Telegraph Act, said police inspector, Vaibhav Khant. "Dimond is visiting India on a tourist visa. The CISF informed us that they have found a satellite phone when he was about to board a flight to Mumbai. We have lodged a case against him and seized the phone for further probe," he said. Bhuj police submitted a case report to a local court and asked Dimond to stay back for a probe. 5 men held, juvenile apprehended for killing cab driver in Alipur

Five men have been arrested and a juvenile apprehended for allegedly killing an Ola driver and looting his car in Alipur area of Rohini, police said today. On March 23, a body of a man was found near open DDA land behind Khampur radio station. On the basis of a tailor's mark on the deceased's shirt, a team was sent to neighbouring Noida in Uttar Pradesh and later, the deceased was identified as Hari Narayan (35), who was a cab driver for Ola, they said. His relatives told police that Narayan left for duty on March 23 around 10 am. When he didn't return, they contacted Ola and were informed that his last location was in Sonepat in Haryana, they said. After the body was identified and the doctor opined that the cause of death was strangulation, investigation was taken up, the police said. CBI books 2 pvt agri companies for Rs 89-cr loan fraud

The CBI has registered cases against the directors of two Punjab-based private companies for allegedly cheating Bank of India to the tune of over Rs 89 crore, officials said here today. A Rs 61.01-crore fraud case has been registered against Sri Nangli Rice Mills Private Limited. Another company, Sri Nangli Agro Tech Private Limited, has been booked for an alleged Rs 28.30-crore loan fraud, they said. Vijay Kumar, Satish Kumar, Anil Kumar and Manoj Kumar are the directors of both the companies. Two chartered accountancy firms have also been booked in connection with the cheating cases. The accused induced Bank of India to sanction credit facilities on the basis of forged and fabricated stock statements, balance-sheets etc. and cheated the bank to the tune of Rs. 61.01 crore and Rs 28.30 crore, CBI spokesperon RK Gaur said. Boy dies during surgery, parents lodge plaint against doctors

Parents of a four-year-old boy, who died during a surgery at a private hospital in Trombay area here, have approached police with the complaint of negligence against the doctors. The boy died while undergoing a surgery for hernia last evening, police said. Police recorded the parents' statement today and sent the boy's medical papers to a committee of experts from the state-run J J Hospital. A case will be registered only after obtaining the committee's opinion, the police said.

4 arrested for looting manager of jewellery shop

Four people, including two police officers, have been arrested for allegedly looting a marketing manager of a Mumbai based jewellery shop, police said today. Some car borne men in police uniform had looted Rohit Jain in Sahibabad area on March 18, the police said. Four police teams were deputed to solve the case. After a marathon exercise and more than a dozen raids in Delhi, Meerut, Bulandshahar, Noida and Ghaziabad, four robbers have been arrested, Prashant Kumar, additional director general of police (ADG) Meerut zone, said. CBI files fresh status report in Himachal HC in Kotkhai rape, murder case

The CBI filed a fresh status report on the Kotkhai rape and murder case in the Himachal Pradesh High Court today, saying it had solid evidence against the accused which would be revealed during the next hearing on April 25. Yesterday, the court had rapped the Central Bureau of Investigation over the tardy pace of probe into the sensational case, and summoned the CBI chief to appear before it on April 18. A division bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Sandeep Sharma, today asked the agency to file the status report before next hearing on April 25 with credible evidence against the accused. SC judge seeks full court discussion on govt interference

Senior and renowned Supreme Court judge Jasti Chelameswar on Thursday wrote to the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, seeking a full court discussion on government interference in the appointment of judges to high courts.Justice Chelameswar, in his letter, cautioned that the bonhomie between the judiciary and the government in any State sounded the death knell to democracy."Let us also not forget that bonhomie between Judiciary and the Government in any State sounds death knell to Democracy. Gauhati HC to form fast track courts to try rape cases

The Gauhati High Court has approved a proposal for setting up of fast track courts for day-to-day trial of cases related to rape and murder of women and children. An administrative committee consisting has resolved to approve the matter in a meeting held yesterday, a release issued by the high court said today. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in a letter on March 26, had urged the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to consider setting up of fast track courts in the wake of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Nagaon district, and similar cases in the state. The committee will work out the modalities and submit a report in this regard within three days, the release said. In his letter, the chief minister also lauded the efforts of the high court for constituting fast track courts to try cases under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1971, which has led to speedy conviction of culprits.

Therapist held on charges of trying to outrage woman's modesty

A therapist was today arrested for allegedly attempting to outrage the modesty of a 42-year-old married woman at a clinic here, police said. Jignesh Gokani, a Sujok (the alternative healing method) therapist, allegedly touched the woman inappropriately when she had gone there as part of treatment to her back pain and other health conditions on March 27 night, they said. The woman told police that she managed to push him aside and fled from the spot.
