Naming of square after PM not the cause of killing: police,

Three persons have been arrested in connection with beheading of the father of a BJP worker in Darbhanga, even as police asserted that the killing was the fall-out of a land dispute and "not in any way related to naming of a square after Prime Minister Narendra Modi". Ramchandra Yadav (65), was hacked to death inside his residence at Bhadava village in Sadar police station area of the north Bihar district late Thursday night by unidentified persons, said to be over 20 in number, who also attacked and wounded his son Kamlesh - a BJP worker. Two arrested for robbing diamonds worth Rs 17 crore

Two persons were today arrested for robbing semi-processed diamonds worth around Rs 17 crore here at gunpoint, police said. The incident happened on March 14. Police identified the arrested accused as Arjun Pandey and Manvendra Thakur, both hailing from Uttar Pradesh, and added that a third man, Mohit Singh Rana, was still at large. Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said that the looted diamonds belonged to a polishing firm called Glow Star Manufacturing Company, and were robbed at gun point from its manager and another employee when the two were on their way to deposit it in a vault in Katargam locality here. "On the way to the safe deposit vault, the employees were attacked by a group of robbers who fired a round in the air and snatched the bag containing the diamonds. Elderly couple murdered, cash & valuables stolen

, Mar 17 PTI) An elderly couple were murdered at their home at Gudivada town of Krishna district and cash and other valuables stolen, police said. The deceased have been identified as B Sai Chowdary (72) and his wife B Nagamani (67) and were staying alone in the house, they said. Police said that the robbers gained entry into their house last night, killed them and decamped with the cash and valuables in the couple's car. The murders came to light this morning when neigbours found them lying in a pool of blood and informed police. Police said they are ascertaining the exact amount of cash and valuables stolen.

Neeraj Bawana demands better facilities for Tihar high-risk ward inmates

Alleged gangster Neeraj Bawana today threatened to go on a hunger strike if better facilities of food and medicines were not provided to Tihar jail inmates. In a letter to a Delhi court, Bawana, arrested in connection with several cases, talked about the poor condition of the inmates lodged in high-risk ward of the country's largest prison. Teenager gangraped in Odisha, four arrested

A teenager was allegedly gangraped in Odisha's Ganjam district on Friday and four persons were arrested for it today, police said. The girl was allegedly gangraped inside a cashew forest near Tamanada, about 90 km from here, Bhanjanagara sub-divisional police officer Utkal Keshari Das said. The girl was rescued by villagers, who informed the police and an FIR was filed afterwards. The arrested, who were aged between 22 and 32 years, have been identified, Das said. Medical examinations of the accused and the victim were conducted at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. Inspector in-charge of Jagannath Prasad police station, Anirudha Mallick said the statement of the rape survivor was also recorded before the designated court here as per the provisions of the POCSO Act.

Diesel thieves escape after ramming vehicle into C'garh cops

Two policemen were injured after they were hit by a vehicle driven by suspected diesel thieves in Chhattisgarhs Korba district, police said today. The incident took place yesterday night in the Dipka coal mine project area of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Korba Additional Superintendent of Police Kirtan Rathore said. He said that a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided the Dipka mines area to apprehend diesel thieves. "While trying to stop the SUV in which the suspected diesel thieves were travelling, the two constables, Vipin Nayak and Kalesh Byar, were injured. The SUV hit them and the thieves managed to escape," he said. "The injured policemen were immediately rushed to the SECL hospital from where they were shifted to a private hospital. Their condition is now normal," the ASP said. The SUV was later found abandoned in Pali area here, he informed. A case has been registered in this connection and efforts are on to trace the absconding accused, he said.

Former Goa minister gets anticipatory bail in row on beach

A local court today granted anticipatory bail to former state tourism minister Francisco Miccky Pacheco after he was booked for threatening and endangering the life of a watersports operator here. On March 12, a complaint was filed at Verna police station alleging that Pacheco drove his car onto the beach at Consua-Utorda and damaged watersports infrastructure of operator Melro D'Souza. The complaint, filed by Melroy's mother Fanny, also alleged that Pacheco had threatened Melroy, officials said. A video of Pacheco purportedly abusing the watersports operator had gone viral on social media platforms. MSEB staff booked for boy's death due to electrocution

Over two-and-a-half months after the death of an 11-year-old Bhandup boy due to electrocution, police have registered a case against the Maharshatra State Electricity Board (MSEB) officials and other staff, a police officer said today. The incident had occurred outside Bhandup railway station in the afternoon of December 26 last year. Ankush Subhash Thakur, a resident of Shyamanagar in Bhandup East, who was going home with his father, had died on the spot after coming in contact with a live wire of an open transformer, a senior official of Kanjurmarg Police Station said. Tara given life imprisonment in Beant Singh assassination case

A special court here today awarded life imprisonment to Jagtar Singh Tara in connection with assassination of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. The court of Additional District and Session Judge J S Sidhu pronounced the sentence in the high security Burail jail here where Tara is currently lodged, Tara's counsel Simranjit Singh said. A fine of Rs 35,000 was also imposed on Tara by the court, he said. The lawyer said his client would not challenge the order in the higher court. He said the CBI counsel had pressed for capital punishment for Tara. Tara (43) had been booked under various sections of IPC, including section 302 (murder), section 307 (attempt to murder) and section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and other relevant sections of the Explosive Act. A special CBI court has deferred till March 19 the judgement against former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad and Jagannath Mishra in the fourth fodder scam case pertaining to alleged withdrawal of Rs 3.13 crore from the Dumka treasury over two decades ago, a lawyer said today. Man gets life imprisonment for raping 90-year-old woman

The district court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a 90-year-old woman in 2015. Vishnu Krishna Nalawade (53), a resident of Naganwadi in Bhudargad tehsil, allegedly raped the bed-ridden woman, who lived in his neighbourhood, on March 4, 2015. The court examined nine witnesses during the trial and their testimonies proved crucial, public prosecutor Amruta Patole said. HC winds up Sagayam-led panel on illegal mining

The Madras High Court has wound up the one-man commission appointed by it to probe into illegal granite mining activities in Madurai. A division bench of Justices T S Sivagnanam and G Jayachandran passed an order yesterday winding up the commission headed by IAS officer U Sagayam. 3 Bangladeshi nationals held for helping suspected terrorists

At least three Bangladeshi nationals were today arrested from Pune by the state ATS for allegedly providing shelter to suspected terrorists of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an Islamic extremist group in Bangladesh, officials said. The arrested accused, who themselves were illegally staying in India, had provided shelter to the ABT members. "The three Bangladeshi nationals had been staying illegally, without any authorised travel documents for the past five years in Wanavadi and Akurdi areas," a senior official of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said. The ABT is an al-Qaeda inspired Islamic extremist group in Bangladesh, he said. "The three accused are aged between 25 and 31 years and hail either from Khulna or Shariyatpur in Bangladesh," he said. Sorcerer held for raping mentally unstable woman

A sorcerer has been arrested for allegedly raping a married woman here on the pretext of helping her get rid of evil power, police said today. "A 25-year-old mentally unstable woman approached sorcerer Dayaram yesterday. The accused reportedly raped her. Woman dies after fall from highrise

A woman today died after falling from the fifth floor of a highrise in south Kolkata, police said. The woman, aged around 45 years, fell from the fifth floor of the highrise on Prince Anwar Shah Road at around 11:30 pm. She was taken to M R Bangur Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival, police said. The woman had a flat on the 17th floor of the highrise, South City Residency, and lived alone with a maid.
