Four arrested for consuming liquor in Patna

Four youths, including three students of Chanakya National Law University (CNLU), Patna, have been arrested for consuming liquor on the institute's premises, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a team of officers from Jakkanpur police station raided the institute last night and found all four of them in an inebriated condition in their hostel room, SHO Abrar Ahmad Khan told PTI. Four empty bottles of foreign liquor were also seized from the room, Khan said. "The police got a call from the hostel last night that some students were creating nuisance under the influence of liquor," he said. Three of them are residents of Patna while the fourth one, a common friend, hailed from Bhagalpur, he said. All four of them were arrested under section 37(C) of Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016 and sent to jail, the police officer said. Woman's body found in forest; uncle held for murder

The half-naked body of a 20- year-old woman was found in a forest near Kotla, 70 kms from here, following which her maternal uncle was arrested for allegedly killing her, police said today. The woman, a resident of Shahpur town of the district, was found dead yesterday. Her half-naked body was recovered from the forest, bringing back memories of the brutal gang rape and murder of a schoolgirl at Kotkhai in Shimla in July last year. According to the SP, Santosh Patial, a case was registered under IPC Section 302 (murder), and the accused man, who is the deceased's maternal uncle, was arrested today. "The accused Sarran Dass, alias Sanju, has confessed to the killing of the woman. Further investigations into the case are on," Patial said. As per the FIR, the victim had gone to meet her sister to Padhar village on February 4. The place is 20 km away from her house near Shahpur. Convene all party meet to pressure Karna to get Cauvery water

PMK today demanded that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palanisamy convene an all party meeting immediately and exert pressure on Karnataka and the Centre to get the state's water share to save crop in delta districts. Party MP Anbumani Ramadoss claimed that Karnataka has 31 tmc feet of water in dams, of which they should release at least 10 TMC feet to Tamil Nadu. On the bribery charges against the vice-chancellor of Bharathiar University, A Ganapathy, Anbumani alleged that corruption prevailed in almost all Universities in the state. He said there should be a CBI probe into instances of alleged corruption in the University in the last 15 years. Ganapathy was arrested on February 3 for allegedly accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an aspirant for the post of an assistant professor.

People facing trial for serious offences be barred from polls:

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has told the Supreme Court that it has proposed to the Centre to amend the law and bar people, accused of an offence punishable with at least five years, from contesting elections after charges were framed against them by a court. In an affidavit filed in the top court, the ECI said that it has actively taken steps to decriminalise politics and also made recommendations, but "any further steps to effectively decriminalise politics would require legislative amendments, which is beyond the scope" of the poll panel. It said people against whom charges have been framed by a court for offences punishable with at least five years, should be barred from contesting polls if the cases were registered against them at least six months prior to the election. Two motorcycle-borne collegians die after hitting mini-truck

Two collegians died after their two-wheeler collided with a mini-truck in suburban Dadar in the early hours today. Police said that the incident happened around 1:15am when the motorcycle hit the four-wheeler head on while negotiating a turn at a junction near Veer Savarkar Road. The two were returning to their homes after a visit to Shivaji Park nearby, police said. The two collegians, identified as Vedant Narvekar and Manish Thakur, were rushed to a nearby hospital where they succumbed to their wounds, police added. The driver of the four-wheeler, used for transporting milk, was arrested and charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, police said, adding that further investigations were underway.

Four held for allegedly attempting to burgle a bank

Four persons were arrested for allegedly attempting a burglary at a bank in the Gudagodji town of Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu district, police said today. Of the four arrested persons, one has claimed that he was a part of the elite President's Bodyguard (PBG), they said. "Four persons were arrested while attempting a burglary at a bank late Saturday night. One of the arrested accused has claimed himself to be a President's Bodyguard (PBG). We need to verify his identity," SP, Jhunjhunu, Manish Agarwal said. The accused claiming to be President's bodyguard was identified as Sandeep Rajput, resident of Kishorpura area, he added. The other three accused were Vikas Meena, Sanjay Singh and Shakti Singh, Agarwal said. A car was also recovered from the accused, police said. The accused had allegedly entered the bank by breaking open the shutters, police said. The attempt was foiled after an alert neighbour provided information, they added.

Man attempts self-immolation in Nagpur

A man was arrested after he tried to self-immolate in front of the Chief Minister's House in Nagpur.The Nagpur Police has also detained four others who were accompanying him.They had allegedly been removed from their service in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).The detained people were among the 17 people who have not yet been reinstated by the NMC following the sacking of 106 surplus employees in 2002.

AIMPLB decides to remove Salman Nadvi from board

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board's (AIMPLB) member on Sunday informed that the committee has decided to remove Moulana Salman Hasni Nadvi's from the board."The board reiterated its uncompromising stand on Babri Masjid issue. Pak activist Asma Jahangir dies of cardiac arrest

Pakistan's well known human rights lawyer and social activist Asma Jahangir died here today of cardiac arrest. She was 66. "Asma suffered heart attack today morning and she was rushed to Hameed Latif Hospital Lahore where she breathed her last. Doctors tried to save her life but couldn't," senior lawyer Adeel Raja said. As the news of her death broke condolences started pouring in from the lawyers, rights activists and politicians terming it a "great loss" for Pakistan. She is survived by two daughters and a son. Nine juveniles escape from observation home in Ambala

Nine juveniles escaped from the observation home at Ambala City in the early hours today, police said. Police said some of them were accused of serious offences and most juveniles who fled were in the age group of 12 to 18 years, they said. The incident came to the notice of the observation home authorities when some other inmates reported the juveniles missing. After getting the information about the incident, SP (Ambala) Abhishek Jorwal visited the observation home. Jorwal said the inmates had used a ladder to escape. Hanuman statue land issue: CBI registers preliminary enquiry

The CBI has begun its probe into alleged encroachment of land in the construction of the famous 108-feet-tall Hanuman temple and a car dealership agency in Karol Bagh area here, agency officials said today. The agency has initiated a preliminary enquiry to ascertain prima facie evidence of alleged criminality and involvement of civic body officials in permitting the structures, they said. The action of the agency comes on the directions of the Delhi High Court which had instructed it to probe how the 108- feet-tall Hanuman statue, which has become a signature landmark of the national capital in movies, and the two- wheeler dealership encroached upon public land in the busy Karol Bagh area and the officials who allowed it to happen by "abusing their position". Over 120 recommendations for HC posts pending with govt, SC

Over 120 recommendations by 13 high courts for appointment of judges are pending with the government and the Supreme Court collegium, awaiting a final decision at a time when 403 posts out of a total sanctioned strength of 1,079 are vacant in various high courts. On the flip side, the figures also indicate that the high courts are yet to recommend suitable names for 280 vacancies. Highly-placed sources in the government said that as on February 1, as many as 123 recommendations made by collegiums of 13 high courts were pending with the government as well as the Supreme Court collegium. While 43 names are pending with the Supreme Court collegium, 80 names are with the government. The sources pointed out that the figures also indicate that the high court collegiums have not recommended names to fill up the remaining 280 vacancies. As per the latest law ministry data, as on February 1, the Allahabad high court has a maximum of 56 vacancies, followed by 39 in Calcutta, 38 in .

Man gets life term for stabbing wife 21 times with knife

A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court for brutally stabbing his wife to death 21 times with a peeler knife six years ago. The court noted that the assault on the woman's head was "so brutal" that it resulted in fracture of underlying skull bone. A bench of justices Sunil Gaur and Prathiba M Singh dismissed the appeal of Devender Dass saying it was without any substance and upheld his conviction and sentence of life imprisonment by the trial court. The man had murdered his wife on the intervening night of October 31 and November 1, 2012 by stabbing her 21 times with a peeler knife and hitting with a brick. A woman and her son involved in an alleged overseas job racket operating from Pitampura have been arrested, police said today. Deputy Commissioner of Police, North West District, Aslam Khan said, the police managed to bust the racket running under the name of Mastech Experts Pvt. Ltd..
