SI held for death of minor in police encounter with criminals

A sub-inspector has been arrested for the death of an 8-year-old boy caught in a crossfire during a police encounter with criminals in Mohanpur Aduki village here last month, the police said today. According to DSP Rakesh Kumar, on the information about the presence of some criminals in the village, the police reached there January 17 and an exchange of fire ensued, in which the boy was injured. The police was taking the child to a hospital, but they changed their mind midway and left him back at the village. The boy later succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital, the officer said. "On the basis of a departmental probe, Sub-Inspector Virendra Singh was arrested," the DSP, who probed the incident, said. Earlier Singh, Sub-Inspector Saurabh Sharma and two constables were suspended following a spot inspection by IG Raja Srivastava.

ASG Tushar Mehta appointed spl public prosecutor in 2G cases

The government has appointed Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta as the special public prosecutor in the 2G spectrum allocation cases for the CBI after the agency's case was rejected by a special court. An order issued on February 8 by the Department of Personnel and Training in the official gazette, said, "The central government hereby appoints Tushar Mehta, Advocate, as Special Public Prosecutor for conducting prosecution, appeals/ revisions or other proceedings arising out of the cases related to 2G Spectrum investigated by the Delhi Special Police Establishment (CBI) in the Court of Special Judge (2G Spectrum cases), Central Bureau of Investigation, New Delhi, and appellate/revisional courts." The notification did not mention about present special public prosecutor Anand Grover who was recommended by K K Venugopal, the Attorney General, when he was representing the agency in the Supreme Court. Three arrested with sophisticated weapons in Kalimpong

Three people were today arrested from Gorubathan area in Kalimpong district for being in possession of sophisticated weapons, police said. The trio's car was stopped in Pan Dara area, where they were held in possession of M-16 rifles, Kalimpong Superintendent of Police Ajit Singh Yadav said. Two of the arrested persons hail from Manipur and one from Jalpaguri, police said. The three were produced in a local court which remanded them to four days of police custody. An investigation into the matter is underway, the SP added.

Pakistan tribesmen end sit-in over police killing of model

Thousands of Mehsud tribesmen have ended their dayslong sit-in in Islamabad after assurances that the police officer accused of killing a 27-year-old aspiring model will be arrested and their other demands also met. Ameer Muqam, an adviser to the prime minister on political affairs, informed the protesting tribesmen today that their grievances were being addressed, including clearing land mines from their area, providing financial compensation to those injured by them and establishing an area college in South Waziristan. The tribesmen arrived at the capital on Feb 1 and demanded the arrest of police officer Rao Anwar who killed Naqeeb Ullah Mehsud in an allegedly staged shootout in Karachi on January 13. A court ordered the arrest of Anwar and he went into hiding.

Man thrashed by gang in a suspected case of moral policing

In a suspected case of moral policing, a 22-year-old man was beaten up by some people in a village in the district, police said today. The incident occurred at Kalinkallathani on February 1, police said. They said Muhammed Rafi went to the village to meet a girl when he was attacked by some persons with pipes and wooden logs after he was tied to an electric pole. They charged him with having an affair with her, police said Rafi, who sustained injuries in the attack on his hands and legs, later managed to escape from the spot and was treated for his injuries at a hospital. Police registered cases under various sections of IPC, including unlawful assembly, rioting and attempt to commit culpable homicide against 30 persons, who are at large, on a complaint from the man today, police said.

JMM MLA's assembly membership annulled

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Yogendra Prasads assembly membership was annulled with effect from January 31 as a Ramgarh court had sentenced him to three years imprisonment in a coal theft case, an assembly release said today. Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Dinesh Oraon took the decision as the Ramgarh Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate had sentenced Prasad to three-years imprisonment on January 31, it said. The release said under section 8 of the Peoples Representation Act, the membership of the House ceases with immediate effect if the prison term is two years or more than two years. Prasad represented Gomia on JMM ticket. The Speaker took the advice of Advocate General, the release said. On January 31, Ramgarh sub-divisional judicial magistrate, R P Mala had convicted Prasad and three others and sentenced them to three years rigorous imprisonment The theft case was lodged with Rajrappa police station of Ramgarh district in 2010.

Pak man arrested for killing sister over affair with relative

Police in Pakistan have arrested a man who killed his sister for having an affair with a relative, on the orders of a local 'Jirga' in Sukkur district in southern Sindh province. "We have also booked and arrested the father and two local landlords who were part of the local Jirga," Sukkur SP, Amjad Shaikh said. The 19-year-old girl was killed by her brother on February 8 in Pano Aqil after the local jury declared her a "sinful woman" as she was found to be having an affair with a relative. "The local jury decided that the girl had brought dishonour for her family and declared her as sinful," Shaikh said. He said the family of the girl had initially tried to give the impression that she had committed suicide. "But we have now arrested the brother and father and two landlords who have confessed to their involvement," he said. Such 'honour killings' are common in Pakistan in poor communities in urban areas and cities and more recently there have been several cases reported .

Indian woman falls to death from Sharjah building

A 41-year-old Indian woman died after falling from the 10th floor of a building in Sharjah. The woman identified as P Thomas died on the spot last night due to the strong impact of the fall, police said, adding that they are still to determine if the woman committed suicide. Police operations room received a call at 8.30 pm about the incident and immediately dispatched patrols and ambulance to Al Qasimiya area in Sharjah, the Khaleej Times reported. A team of officers from forensic, CID, rescue unit and crime scene departments rushed to the site. They found the woman lying in a pool of blood. The police shifted the woman's body to the forensic laboratory and launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the death. A number of people who were in touch with her on the day before she died are being interrogated. Police said they are still to determine if the woman committed suicide, even as they are probing all angles.

Class 9 student sexually abused at school, staffer held

A Class-9 student of a state-run girls school in the city was allegedly sexually abused by a non-teaching staff at the institute's premises, police said today. The incident surfaced a day after a teacher of a prominent private English-medium school was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a Class-2 girl. The class 9 student and her parents lodged a complaint at the Rabindra Sarobar police station yesterday, alleging she was sexually abused by the school's group-IV staff, a senior Kolkata Police officer said. Police said the accused was arrested today and produced before a court which remanded him to police custody till February 12. "The accused was arrested today under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012. Rajnath calls for basic training in forensics for policemen

There was a need for policemen to get basic training in forensic science as it is going to be the "most effective weapon" to deal with crimes, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said here today. Detection is bigger deterrent for criminals than the nature of punishment, he said at the inaugural function of the 24th All India Forensic Science Conference organised here. "Many police officers know little about forensics. And due to lack of knowledge, there is a risk of evidences getting corrupted or destroyed. Tripura elections: 22 candidates have criminal cases

Man dead, 7 injured as car hits stationary truck

A 27-year-old man died and seven were injured when their vehicle rammed a stationary truck on Chirag Dilli flyover in Hauz Khas area of south Delhi as they were returning from their office in Gurgaon, the police said today. The vehicle, carrying eight people, was headed towards Jamia Nagar last night when the incident occurred, they said. The deceased has been identified by Ammar Saeed. All the victims were employees of a multinational company in Gurgaon, a police officer said. Arrest warrant against former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh

The West Bengal CID has issued an arrest warrant against former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh for alleged misconduct and extortion from civilians, a senior officer of the investigating agency said today. "We have issued an arrest warrant against Ghosh and her (former) security personnel Sujit Mondal. She will be arrested wherever spotted," the officer told PTI. The arrest warrant against Ghosh was issued after the former IPS officer failed to appear before the investigating officer or furnish any reply, another source in the CID said.
