Minor Dalit girl killed in UP

An eight-year-old Dalit girl was killed in Vishnupur village here allegedly over a land dispute, police said today. The incident took place yesterday around 8.00 pm when the girl had gone for grazing the goats, Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said. The police said that a land dispute is believed to be the reason behind the alleged killing. The deceased's father has lodged a complaint in this regard, naming his nephews as accused, he said. A case in this regard has been registered against the two accused, the SP said, adding that the body has been sent for post-mortem.

Fill posts in child rights panels, implement Juvenile Justice

The Supreme Court today passed a slew of directions for effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice Act and asked the Centre and states to ensure that all positions in national and state commissions for the protection of child rights are filled up. A bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta also directed the states to ensure that all positions in juvenile justice boards and Child Welfare Committees are filled up expeditiously and in accordance with rules. Any delay in filling up the positions might adversely impact on children and this should be avoided, the bench said. The top court also requested the chief justices of all high courts to register proceedings on their own for effective implementation of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. IAF Group Captain Arun Marwah arrested, undergoes questioning

Indian Air Force Group Captain Arun Marwah facing espionage charges has been arrested and is undergoing questioning by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police, sources today said. Marwah was handed over to the Special Cell's northern range on Wednesday after being interrogated for nearly 10 days by the counter intelligence wing of the IAF, a senior police official said. He has been booked under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) provisions and five days police custody has been granted by the court for questioning him, he said. Marwah, who was posted at the Air Force headquarters, was allegedly leaking classified documents to a woman through WhatsApp. He had befriended her through Facebook in December last year, the official said. As per the complaint filed against Marwah by the Air Force, he was caught by the counter intelligence wing after he was found carrying a high-end phone at the headquarters, which are banned there. The Supreme Court will hear the plea filed by Major Aditya Kumar's father, seeking to quash the FIR registered against his son in connection with the civilian killings during a firing incident in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, on February 12.On January 27, three civilians were killed after Army personnel fired at a stone-pelting mob of protesters in Shopian district.Over 200 protesters pelted stones at the Army convoy, following which the army personnel shot in the air in their self-defence.Following the incident, the state police filed an FIR under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the Major and his Army unit of 10 Garhwal Rifles.Subsequently, the Army filed a counter FIR in response.

Three arrested for rape in Bhiwandi

Three young men have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape a 17-year-old girl in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi near here, police said today. The incident took place in a slum colony on Wednesday night, they said, adding the accused were identified as Imran Khan (24), Javed Shaikh (23) and the third one only as Kinna (20). The trio barged into the house of the survivor when she was alone. While one of them, Khan, allegedly raped the teenager at a knife point, the other two kept a vigil outside the house, said senior inspector K D Jadhav of the Shanti Nagar police station. Based on a complaint filed by the girl, police arrested the trio yesterday, he said. They have been booked under IPC sections 376(d) (gang rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation), police said. Laskhar man convicted for terror financing, money laundering

A terrorist of the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by a local court here in a terror financing and money laundering case, officials said today. Bilal Ahmed Quta alias Imran Jalal, who operated from Karnataka, has also been fined Rs 50,000 by the court, they said. A special PMLA court of Judge Shivshankar Amarannavar pronounced the verdict yesterday. The case dates back to January, 2007 when the man was arrested with an AK series assault rifle, 200 bullets, five hand grenades and a satellite phone by the KarnatakaPolice while he was getting down from a bus in Bengaluru. He was charged with "waging war" against Government of India, possession of arms and explosives and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Woman sentenced to death in China for arson

A Chinese woman was sentenced to death today for setting an apartment on fire in which four members of a family were killed. Mo Huanjing, a former nanny of the family of Lin Shengbin, was found guilty of arson. Lin's wife and their three young children were killed in the incident last year, the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court said in its verdict. Mo started the fire using a lighter in the early morning after she searched the keyword "arson" online, according to the court. Mo was also convicted of theft, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

'451 criminals expelled from dist during last 13 months under

Indian-American killed, another injured in shootings at US

An Indian-American was killed and another critically injured when a man opened fire in two convenience stores in the US state of Georgia. Parmjit Singh, a 44-year-old father of two high school students, was shot multiple times on Tuesday evening at the Hi Tech Quick Stop on Burnett Ferry Road, sheriff's officers said. The Floyd County coroner pronounced him dead on the scene. Just 10 minutes after shooting Singh, the gunman entered another convenience store, Elm Street Food and Beverage, and stole money before shooting 30-year-old clerk Parthey Patel, sheriffs officers said. Accused in Chandan Gupta murder case surrenders before court

Another accused in the killing of Chandan Gupta during a rally on Republic Day in Kasganj town of Uttar Pradesh today surrendered before a local court, police said. "Asif Gymwala, who was named as an accused in the Chandan Gupta murder case, surrendered in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate.
