The CBI today arrested two senior executives of a Noida-based construction company and an Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner in a bribery case involving Rs 5 lakh, agency officials said. The arrested persons are Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner Surender Kumar, 3C Universal Developers Pvt Ltd executive Santosh Kumar, and the Chief Financial Officer of the company Dinesh Pahwa, they said. The company had built several projects in the NCR area like Lotus Boulevard, Lotus Boulevard Espacia, Lotus Panache among others. The CBI had received information that APFC Surender Kumar was allegedly in the habit of demanding illegal gratification from various private parties in the name of Regional Provident Fund Commissioner by providing them relief in the cases of violation of provident fund provisions. A 23-year-old woman standing near the door of a coach of a CSMT-bound local train fell on tracks and sustained serious injuries after a mobile phone thief hit her with a stick, an RPF official said today. The accused, a minor, was apprehended from the Masjid railway station this morning. The incident occurred last morning when Dravita Singh, a resident of Kalyan in Thane district, was commuting to her office in a ladies special train, he said. A minor girl suffered serious burn injuries after her uncle allegedly poured petrol on her while she was preparing tea on the gas stove, police said. The incident occurred today after a verbal spat between the victim's mother and her Greece-based NRI uncle over money, said SSP Sandeep Sharma. The accused, identified as Haridass, allegedly poured petrol on the victim and her mother, the SSP said. The 16-year-old girl caught fire as she was standing close to the gas stove. Three owners of a tony pub gutted in the Kamala Mills Compound blaze were today arrested for not paying their employees' Provident Fund (PF) dues, police said. Kripesh Sanghvi, his brother Jigar and their partner Abhijeet Mankar, the owners of '1 Above' pub, were arrested by the N M Joshi Marg police, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone III, Virendra Mishra, said. The three had allegedly not paid PF dues of Rs 8.65 lakh that they owed their employees. A case was registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Provident Fund Act, he told PTI. An alleged drug peddler, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000, was arrested by a Crime Branch team near the Dwarka court, police said today. Dinesh Pal (32) was caught recently by the Crime Branch, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar said. "He is a notorious drug peddler and was arrested earlier also. He was carrying a cash reward of Rs 25,000 on his arrest," he said. "The reward was announced by the Commissioner of Police in connection with a case registered with Crime Branch police station," the officer said. The Supreme Court has summoned the Chief Secretary of Himachal Pradesh to appear before it and explain why no lawyers have been engaged by the state for appearing for it in criminal matters. The top court said it was "unfortunate" that there was no representation on behalf of the state of Himachal Pradesh and the lawyer present had no instruction to appear in the matter. Former Madhya Pradesh minister Laxmikant Sharma, his OSD and 85 others were today charged by the CBI for alleged cheating and corruption in the recruitment of Grade-II contractual teachers through Vyapam in 2012, agency officials said. The Centre today told the Supreme Court that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act was a "demand-driven scheme" and it has not curtailed the demand for funds by the states under it. Attorney General (AG) K K Venugopal told a bench comprising justices Madan B Lokur and N V Ramana that there were no instances where the Centre has either capped number of days of employment under the Act or not released funds to the states. "We have paid increased amount (to the states). The MGNREGA is a demand-driven scheme and at no stage, the demand (of the states for funds) has been curtailed by the Union of India," he submitted. Venugopal put forwards the arguments while countering the submissions of advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO-turned-political party Swaraj Abhiyan. A sum of Rs 83 crore allotted to the village panchayats here in 2017-17 for implementation of MGNREGS and sanitation programmes, and construction of roads is unaccounted for, recent audits have shown. The suspected case of corruption came to light when District Panchayat Raj Officer (DPRO) Sharan Jeet Kaur served notices on the erring village panchayats, sources said. District Magistrate Mahendra Bahadur, who took charge just a few days back, told PTI today that he had taken notice of the issue and asked the departments concerned to clarify soon so that action could be initiated. The BJP in Karnataka today alleged that a Rs 7,000 crore scam has taken place in importing sand from Malaysia and selling it at an exorbitant price in the state. Raising the issue in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, opposition BJP leader Jagadish Shettarsaid Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL) had awarded the contract to a bogus company, Poseidon FZE, through a tender to import 180 lakh tons of sand for five years. "The company has given EMD documents at Axios Credit Bank in Singapore, but this bank has no branch in Singapore," Shettar said, releasing documents about the alleged scam. Shettar alleged that the import price of the sand flown from Malaysia is Rs 107 per 50 kg bag, but it was being sold at an exorbitant price of Rs 200 per 50 kg bag. "I can understand if there is a hike in selling price to say Rs 10 to Rs 15, but an increase of Rs 93 cannot be accepted.This is a scam of huge dimensions," he said. The Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department officials today seized 43 gram of heroin from a Myanmarese national here and arrested him for possessing the contraband, a department spokesman said. The contraband is worth around Rs 1.5 lakh in the local market, the spokesman said. In another incident, the officials also seized 13.5 kilogram of ganja from two persons, and arrested them for possession of drugs, he said.
