CBI arrests BSF commandant
The CBI has arrested a BSF commandant in Kerala's Alappuzha for allegedly carrying Rs 47 lakh in cash. Jibu D Mathew, Commandant of the BSF's 83rd battalion, deployed on Indo-Bangla border in West Bengal, was nabbed when deboarded the Shalimar Express train at Alappuzha, CBI sources said. They said the arrest was following a tip off about an alleged corruption case. The sources, however, remained tight lipped about the case as the investigation is still going on. They said the agency is looking into the source of cash.

AgustaWestland: SC reserves order on PIL seeking SIT probe
The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on Public interest litigation (PIL) by an NGO Swaraj Abhiyan seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged involvement of a middleman in purchase of AgustaWestland VIP helicopter by Chhattisgarh government.The court was hearing a plea seeking investigation into the alleged irregularities in the purchase of the helicopter and also foreign bank accounts purportedly linked to the son of Chief Minister Raman Singh.According to reports, the apex court said it was concerned whether any "fraud" was committed while purchasing a VIP AgustaWestland helicopter.Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO, told the court that the documents received under the RTI show that although the Bell helicopter was denied a bid, the government was still hiring it on rent.

One of the prime accused in the Kasganj communal violence, Salim Javed, was arrested on Wednesday, a police officer said, adding that based on leads provided by him, police are looking for the other accused as well.
Man held with 22 gram heroin in Punjab
Police today arrested a man near Mandofal village and seized 22 gram heroin from him. The man, identified as Gourav Singh, a resident of Jalalpur village in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested during checking, police said. A case under sections 21, 61, 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against the accused, they said.
Bhima Koregaon violence: Judge recuses himself from hearing Milind Ekbote bail plea
Bombay High Court Judge, Justice B. R. 2 killed in road accident in Punjab
Two persons were killed when their car collided with a mini-truck at Moga by-pass here, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when they were going to Moga city from Butter village, police said. The deceased were as identified as Kulwant Singh (36) and his neighbour Balveer Kaur (43), they said. A case was registered against mini-truck driver Rakesh Kumar, who was later arrested, the police said.
8-month-old rape case: SC sets 2 doctor team to supervise

2002 extortion case: Court adjourns case against Salem for Feb 21
Delhi's Patiala House Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing against gangster Abu Salem in 2002 Delhi Extortion for February 21.On January 16, Salem claimed that the prosecution did not have enough evidence against him in the 2002 Delhi Extortion case.Through his lawyer, the gangster also claimed in Patiala House court that he was being tried in the case, in violation of an order by which he was extradited to India from Portugal in 2005.Earlier on January 11, the apex court upheld the writ petition filed by the gangster to be 'infructuous'. In the petition, Salem had sought that direction be given to the Centre to send him back to Portugal as it had allegedly flouted rules while seeking his deportation.Salem is facing trial for allegedly demanding Rs 5 crore as protection money from Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta in 2002.He has already been granted bail regarding the case; however, he continues to be in jail on various other cases, including the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
Nawaz's counsel asks SC more time in Article 62 case
Lawyer of former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday sought more time to prepare from the Supreme Court in the case pertaining to the disqualification time period of lawmakers.According to the Geo TV, Nawaz's counsel Azam Tarar requested the bench, which is headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.The hearing is underway to determine the duration of disqualification of elected officials on the violation of Article 62(1)(f) and other related laws.Nisar accepted the plea and directed Tarar to come prepared next week.The Pakistan Supreme Court had, on July 28, disqualified Sharif from holding the office of the prime minister and asked the National Accountability Bureau to file references against the Sharif family in connection with corruption cases against them.

Gold worth Rs 13 lakh seized at Delhi airport
The customs department today seized gold worth Rs 13 lakh from a man at Delhi international airport, officials said. The accused was intercepted after his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from Italian capital Rome. A search resulted in the recovery of 585 grams of gold concealed in his hand baggage, the officials said. The gold seized is valued at Rs 13 lakh, the officials said, adding that the passenger was yet to be arrested.
Pak court resumes hearing in reference case against Ishaq Dar
An accountability court resumed its hearing against Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the corruption case here on Wednesday.According to the Dawn, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Joint Registrar Sidra Mansur submitted documents related to two of Dar's companies in court.Also, SECP Deputy Registrar Salman Saeed sought more time to present further details about the companies.Dar is accused of possessing assets disproportionate to his declared sources of income.A reference against the former finance minister was filed by the NAB in light of the Supreme Court's July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case.Dar had been earlier declared a proclaimed offender by the accountability court due to his continuous absence from the proceedings.On November 23, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi accepted Dar's request to be relieved of his duties as finance minister. Arizona man says he sold ammunition to Las Vegas shooter
An Arizona man named in court documents as a "person of interest" during the investigation of the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history said he had met the shooter one time and sold ammunition to him. Douglas Haig told The Associated Press yesterday that he had been contacted earlier by investigators in the case. Speaking at his suburban home in Mesa, Haig said he planned to hold a news conference later this week to answer questions about his name surfacing in the investigation. "I am the guy who sold ammunition to Stephen Paddock," Haig said without disclosing any details. Police say Paddock was the gunman and killed himself as officers converged on him. A law enforcement official told the AP in October that Paddock bought 1,000 rounds of tracer ammunition from a private seller he met at a Phoenix gun show. Boy, kidnapped three days ago, rescued: Delhi Police
A 12-year-old boy, who was kidnapped three days ago while returning home from his school in northeast Delhi, has been rescued and two people have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping, police said today. One of the accused - Tareef - is an employee at a factory run by the boy's father, while the other accused - Danish - used to work there, a senior police officer said. The boy and his sister were on their way back home in Kardampuri from school when he was kidnapped on Monday. The accused asked the boy about his uncle's address and then took him away, the police officer said. Later, the boy's father received a ransom call for Rs one crore. A case of kidnapping was registered at Jyoti Nagar police station, the officer said. The two accused have revealed that Mohsin, the boy's cousin, was the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping, the officer added. More details were awaited.
Goa: Principal assaults student, case registered
A case was registered by Goa Police against the principal of a school in Margao for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old student.As per the information, the boy was first made to stand outside the class and was thrashed brutally by the principal.The boy, who is severely injured, has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.Police Inspector Kapil Nayak said that a case has been registered and the investigation is underway."We received a complaint that principal assaulted the minor boy and threatened him to not come to school in future. The boy is in the hospital and further investigation is underway," Nayak said.
SC to hear 8-month-old baby rape case today
The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear the Public-Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking justice for an eight-month-old baby girl who was brutally raped in Delhi on January 29.The petitioner urged authorities to immediately shift the infant to a better hospital like AIIMS and to ensure that her parents get a compensation of Rs.10 lakh.The PIL also sought a direction from the government to frame urgent guidelines to provide investigation and trial of the cases involving rape of children less than 13 years under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences ("POSCO") Act, 2012.
