The CBI has arrested a BSF commandant in Kerala's Alappuzha for allegedly carrying Rs 47 lakh in cash. Jibu D Mathew, Commandant of the BSF's 83rd battalion, deployed on Indo-Bangla border in West Bengal, was nabbed when deboarded the Shalimar Express train at Alappuzha, CBI sources said. They said the arrest was following a tip off about an alleged corruption case. The sources, however, remained tight lipped about the case as the investigation is still going on. They said the agency is looking into the source of cash.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on Public interest litigation (PIL) by an NGO Swaraj Abhiyan seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged involvement of a middleman in purchase of AgustaWestland VIP helicopter by Chhattisgarh government.The court was hearing a plea seeking investigation into the alleged irregularities in the purchase of the helicopter and also foreign bank accounts purportedly linked to the son of Chief Minister Raman Singh.According to reports, the apex court said it was concerned whether any "fraud" was committed while purchasing a VIP AgustaWestland helicopter.Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO, told the court that the documents received under the RTI show that although the Bell helicopter was denied a bid, the government was still hiring it on rent.

Police today arrested a man near Mandofal village and seized 22 gram heroin from him. The man, identified as Gourav Singh, a resident of Jalalpur village in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested during checking, police said. Two persons were killed when their car collided with a mini-truck at Moga by-pass here, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when they were going to Moga city from Butter village, police said. The deceased were as identified as Kulwant Singh (36) and his neighbour Balveer Kaur (43), they said. Delhi's Patiala House Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing against gangster Abu Salem in 2002 Delhi Extortion for February 21.On January 16, Salem claimed that the prosecution did not have enough evidence against him in the 2002 Delhi Extortion case.Through his lawyer, the gangster also claimed in Patiala House court that he was being tried in the case, in violation of an order by which he was extradited to India from Portugal in 2005.Earlier on January 11, the apex court upheld the writ petition filed by the gangster to be 'infructuous'. The customs department today seized gold worth Rs 13 lakh from a man at Delhi international airport, officials said. The accused was intercepted after his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from Italian capital Rome. A search resulted in the recovery of 585 grams of gold concealed in his hand baggage, the officials said. The gold seized is valued at Rs 13 lakh, the officials said, adding that the passenger was yet to be arrested.

A 12-year-old boy, who was kidnapped three days ago while returning home from his school in northeast Delhi, has been rescued and two people have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping, police said today. One of the accused - Tareef - is an employee at a factory run by the boy's father, while the other accused - Danish - used to work there, a senior police officer said. The boy and his sister were on their way back home in Kardampuri from school when he was kidnapped on Monday. The accused asked the boy about his uncle's address and then took him away, the police officer said. Later, the boy's father received a ransom call for Rs one crore. A case of kidnapping was registered at Jyoti Nagar police station, the officer said. The two accused have revealed that Mohsin, the boy's cousin, was the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping, the officer added. More details were awaited.
A case was registered by Goa Police against the principal of a school in Margao for allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old student.As per the information, the boy was first made to stand outside the class and was thrashed brutally by the principal.The boy, who is severely injured, has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.Police Inspector Kapil Nayak said that a case has been registered and the investigation is underway."We received a complaint that principal assaulted the minor boy and threatened him to not come to school in future. The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to hear the Public-Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking justice for an eight-month-old baby girl who was brutally raped in Delhi on January 29.The petitioner urged authorities to immediately shift the infant to a better hospital like AIIMS and to ensure that her parents get a compensation of Rs.10 lakh.The PIL also sought a direction from the government to frame urgent guidelines to provide investigation and trial of the cases involving rape of children less than 13 years under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences ("POSCO") Act, 2012.
