UP woman in search of Keralite husband gets help from KSHRC
Taking note of the plight of a woman from Uttar Pradesh, forced to live in the terrace portion of her in-law's house in Kerala without amenities,the State Human Rights Commission directed police to trace her husband and register a case against him. KSHRC acting Chairpersons P Mohandas, who suo-motu registered a case on coming to know of her plight, directed Districtpolice Chief, Ernakulam to take steps to find him. It also ordered that a case be registered against him for defrauding the woman, Jabin Shayaq,an aeronautical engineering diploma holder, by extracting money from her and for cheating her. The woman told the commission that she and Anil Kuruvilla fell in love while pursuing the course at a college at Meerut and got married after graduation,with approval of their parents. They stayed together for four months in the husbands' house at Airapuram in Kerala.Thereafter they went back to Uttar Pradesh, where she delivered a baby boy. Some time back he left for Kerala .
Gangsters arrested for threatening businessman
Police have arrested five members of the Suresh Pujari gang including three 'shooters' for allegedly trying to extort money from a South Mumbai-based businessman. The gangsters initially demanded Rs 50 lakh from the businessman over phone. After an incident of firing at a hotel at Bhiwandi, in which the Pujari gang was said to be involved, they began demanding Rs 1 crore, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dilip Sawant today. If he didn't pay, he will face similar attack, the callers told him, the DCP said. After he approached the MRA Marg police station here, a case of extortion was lodged. "We kept an eye on his shop and the surrounding area and picked up Prathmesh Kotian (30) on suspicion yesterday. His interrogation led to the arrest of Sanket Dalvi (25)," he said. SPO flees with service rifle in J-K
A 22-year-old special police officer (SPO) fled with his service rifle in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, prompting a man hunt to trace him, a senior police official said. Mohammad Yaseen, posted at the Marwah police station, was missing with an AK-47 rifle since last night, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Doda-Kishwar-Ramban range, Basant Kumar Rath told PTI. Yaseen hails from Shishnan village, he said, adding that efforts were on to locate him.

Lawyer's letter highlights 'arbitrariness' of SC collegium

Sonai honour killings case: Death penalty for six convicts
Six convicts were today sentenced to death by a court here for the murder of three Dalit men over an inter-caste love affair in Sonai village of Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra in January 2013. Additional District and Sessions Court Judge R R Vaishnav also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of the convicts. Their "brutal" act was a "disgrace for humanity", worse than a "devil's act", and, therefore, they had forfeited the right to live, Special Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told reporters quoting the verdict. He said the court awarded the capital punishment, as demanded by the prosecution, considering the brutality involved in the crime. Half of the fine amount will be given to the victims' kin as financial aid, Nikam said. Man hacks son-in-law to death
Irritated by the quarrel between his daughter and her husband, a man has hacked his son-in-law to death in Ganjam district, police said today. Forty-year-old T Manu Reddy, father of two children, had gone to in-laws' house in Jhadabai village where his wife was staying for some days. While Reddy was quarrelling with his wife last night, his father-in-law attacked him with a sharp weapon killing him on the spot, police said. The accused was detained.
Man shot dead in Rohini killed over suspicion of leaking info
The Delhi Police suspects that a 30-year-old man shot dead in Rohini's Prashant Vihar area on Monday by a gangster and his men was killed as he was leaking information about them to the police, a senior officer said today. Ravi Bhardwaj was shot dead by Jatinder alias Gogi, one of Delhi's most-wanted criminals, and his accomplices while he was having food at a roadside eatery in Prashant Vihar. A CCTV camera footage showed Gogi and his men firing indiscriminately at Bhardwaj, who received at least 20 bullet wounds on his head, chest and abdomen. The district police, crime branch and special cell are investigating the case. A senior officer, privy to the investigation, said Gogi and Bhardwaj were co-accused in a 2014 attempt to murder case. Haryana to enact law for rapists of minors
Facing heat over a string of rape incidents involving minors in Haryana recently, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today said the state would enact a law providing capital punishment to those found guilty of sexually abusing girls aged 12 years or below. Besides, the state government would make a request for setting up fast-track courts for dealing with rape cases to ensure speedy justice to victims. The chief minister was addressing people after laying the foundation stone of a sugar mill here. Expressing anguish and concern over the recent incidents of rape in the state, he said though the police were dealing with such cases as required under the law, it had been decided to make provisions of "harsher punishment for rape". "Law would be enacted soon to hang those convicted of raping girls aged 12 or younger," he said. Director of a Delhi-based realty firm arrested, sent to jail
Tis Hazari Court has ordered judicial custody of the Director of a Delhi-based real estate and IT solution company for non-compliance in TDS default case, the finance ministry said in a statement today. This year the Principal Chief Commissionerate-New Delhi has sanctioned prosecution in approximately 240 cases "which clearly shows" the strict attitude of the Income Tax Department towards the defaulters, the ministry said. The ministry said that during investigations it was found that the real estate company had deducted TDS but had not deposited in the government account despite there being a statutory obligation by the Income Tax Act. "This also led to harassment of many innocent persons whose TDS had been deducted but the TDS returns had not been filed by the real estate company," the release said. Six-year-old falls from school bus, gets crushed by its wheels
A six-year-old girl died after she fell from a school bus and got crushed under its wheels this morning, police said. The incident happened in the Sahebnagar area of Vanastlipuram police station under Rachakonda Commissionerate. Police said that P Anjali, a student of class one of Prashanti Vidya Niketan, was seated near the exit of the bus and apparently lost her balance and fell when the driver applied breaks to negotiate a speed breaker. "We were told that the girl was sitting near the door. When the driver applied brakes, she fell down and the driver did not notice it. She was rushed to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead," police said. Investigations into the circumstances that caused the mishap are currently on, said police, adding that they were in the process of registering a case.
3 killed in road accident in Uttar Pradesh
Three persons, including two minors, were today killed when a speeding bus collided with a motorcycle here, police said. According to circle officer Sambhal Gamleshwar Viltoria, the incident took place in Asmoli police station area. The deceased were identified as Ansar (20), his nephews Saanib (6) and Uwais (10), he said, adding that their bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
CJI Dipak Misra to hear Justice Loya death case on Jan. 22
The CBI judge Justice B.H. Loya death case will come up for hearing on on January 22 and a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra will hear two petitions in connection with the matter, according to the Supreme Court cause list.The two petitions are seeking an independent probe into the death of Justice Loya, who died in alleged suspicious circumstances in 2014.The top court had asked the Maharashtra government earlier in the month to submit the postmortem report of the CBI judge who had died under mysterious circumstances, asserting that the "matter was very serious."According to reports, Maharashtra-based journalist Lone and activist Tehseen Poonavala had filed independent pleas seeking a fair probe into the mysterious death of Justice Loya, who was hearing the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, in which various police officers and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah were named as parties.
80-year-old woman raped in Pune
An 80-year-old woman was raped at her home in Pune's Talawade village.The incident took place late night on January 13 and an FIR was registered yesterday.According to reports, the woman informed her son about the incident after he came home and accordingly the FIR was registered.The policial officials confirmed that the accused is absconding.An investigation is underway.Further details are awaited.

Revenue official arrested for taking bribe in Raj
A special unit of the Anti Corruption Bureau in Kota has arrested a Revenue official for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500, a ACB official said today. The accused, Rakesh Meena was posted at Eklera Revenue office in Jhalawar district. The arrest was made yesterday after a resident of Jhalawar district had lodged a complaint with the ACB against Meena, the Inspector of special unit of ACB, Kota, Ramesh Arya said. According to the complainant, Meena had demanded a bribe of Rs 3,000 with a threat to notify one bigha of land possessed by him into five bigas and to charge the penalty for the same. The ACB has also recovered some bank passbooks and other papers from his residence, Arya said, adding further investigation into the matter is underway. The accused official would be produced before the ACB court in Kota today, Arya said. Meena is the district president of the Jhalawar Patwar Sangh.
Harassed, 16-year-old girl commits suicide in UP
A 16-year-old girl committed suicide a day after she was allegedly harassed and molested by two youngsters in the Jahanabad area here, police said today. Both the accused were detained after the minor girl killed herself yesterday, Superintendent of Police Shriparna Ganguli said. "The 16-year-old committed suicide after she returned to her home following a medical examination on Friday. Two youngsters have been detained," Ganguli said. Citing a complaint filed by the father of the deceased, the SP said, "The girl had stopped her studies almost two years ago due to the fear of the arrested youngsters. Even after this, the youngsters put up a shop in front of her house, and continued to molest her. Almost two days ago (Thursday), when the teenaged girl had gone out of the house to relieve herself, both the youngsters tried to rape her." 12-year-old girl kidnapped by men in car in Haryana's Gurgaon
A 12-year-old girl returning with her minor sister from her father's work place was allegedly kidnapped by men in a car near a village in this district, a police official said today. The incident happened on Friday when the victim along with her 7-year-old sister was returning home from the factory where her father works, the official said. "A car screeched to a halt and the occupants pulled the elder sister into the vehicle, following which the younger sister rushed home and informed her mother after which the incident was reported to the police," the officer said. School principal shot dead by class 12 student in Haryana
A class 12 student allegedly shot dead the principal of his school today, police said. The accused student fired four shots at Swami Vivekanand School principal Ritu Chhabra, who was in her office, with a .32 bore gun and critically injured her, they said. Chhabra succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Desh Raj. The boy was caught by locals and handed him over to the police, officials said. The incident took place between 11:30 am and 12 noon, police said. The motive behind the killing was yet to be ascertained, they said.
