Seven alleged drug peddlers, including three members of an inter-state gang, were arrested and 436 kg of poppy straw was seized from them in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, police said Monday. The three inter-state narcotic smugglers -- Harjinder Singh, Simranjeet Singh and Sukha Singh from Punjab -- were arrested when they were trying to smuggle 126 kg of poppy straw from the Kashmir Valley, Senior Superintendent of Police, Udhampur, Rayees Bhat said. He said a police party during vehicle checks noticed a Jeep tow chained to a load carrier at Jakheni on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The police searched the vehicle carefully, during which huge quantity of poppy straw was found in a false compartment in the load carrier, Bhat said. The excise and taxation department in Ambala raided a factory Monday in Saha village located on the AmbalaJagadhri highway near Ambala Cantt where country-made liquor was allegedly being manufactured illegally. Around 15 labourers working at the factory were detained for questioning, police said. They said nearly 800 boxes of country-made liquor, a large number of empty bottles, covers and packing machines were recovered during the raid. The factory had been running there for the past several months, they said, adding that its owner was not present when the raid was conducted. As per preliminary investigations, inferior quality liquor of a branded company was being manufactured there and was sold at cheaper rates in the market, police said. Three alleged bovine smugglers were arrested after they were intercepted from separate places and 19 animals were rescued in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Monday. A truck illegally carrying 10 bovine animals was intercepted at Chingus and the driver was arrested, a police spokesman said. He added that seven more animals were recovered from two load carriers during checking on the Rajouri-Kandi road. Both the drivers were arrested for allegedly attempting to transport the bovine animals illegally, the spokesman said. He said another police party rescued two bovine animals, which were being taken by foot by a suspected smuggler on the Thandapani-Patrara road. However, the suspect fled on noticing the police party and efforts were on to identify and arrest him, the spokesman said.
A Swiss woman has been apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at the IGI Airport here for allegedly carrying a satellite phone illegally in her luggage, a senior official said Monday. I Emmenegger, a native of Switzerland, was apprehended after the phone was detected in her baggage on Sunday, he said. The woman, who works as a tour operator, was travelling to Kathmandu (Nepal) from here. She was handed over to the Delhi Police as carrying a satellite phone is banned under law, the official said. Four-members of a gang allegedly involved in several incidents of robbery, snatching and auto thefts were arrested in Dwarka, police said Monday. The accused, Mangal Singh (26), Ram Avtar (23), Rakesh (23) and Rajender (27), are residents of Jhinjhana area of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, they said. The accused mostly targeted morning walkers and women returning home late at night, a senior police officer said. Police claimed to have solved 12 cases of snatching and vehicle theft so far with the arrest. The accused were nabbed near a park in Dwarka on Friday and stolen motorcycles were recovered from them, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bhisham Singh said. A group of 31 suspected Bangladeshi nationals who allegedly entered the country illegally were apprehended on Monday from Guwahati Railway Station, according to police. The group was detained when they were preparing to board Kanchanjunga Express to go to Agartala this morning, Railway Police Deputy Superintendent Iftekar Ali said. The detained include eight women and 13 children, he said. "They could not produce any valid document to prove their Indian citizenship. ... They then confessed that they hail from Bagerhat district in Khulna division of Bangladesh," Ali said. During interrogation, the detainees said that they had entered India illegally two to three years ago and had moved to Bangalore where they did some petty jobs, the police official said. A 25-year-old man was injured after being shot at allegedly by three unidentified bike-borne men in northeast Delhi's Seelampur area, police said Monday. The incident occurred on Sunday midnight when Navi Ahmed was returning home on his motorcycle, they said. The accused persons stopped him midway and opened fire at him, police said, adding that the victim sustained four bullet injuries. Ahmed was rushed to the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, they said. A case was registered in the matter, police said, adding that they are probing all possible angles, including personal enmity. Thirty years after he was charged with raping a girl, a Mumbai court has acquitted a 46-year-old man, observing that at the time of the incident, consensual sex with a girl above 16 was not a crime. The man was 16 years-old at that time when the case was registered against him at the Airport police station in suburban Andheri in 1988. He was accused of "enticing" a 17-year-old girl from the custody of her parents by promising to marry her and raped her. The accused told the court that he had a love affair with the girl. The Kerala High Court Monday granted conditional bail to Roman Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal, three weeks after he was arrested over allegations of repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting a nun. Granting the bail, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan directed the accused to leave Kerala and surrender his passport.
