The Kerala High Court Monday acquitted the prime accused undergoing double life imprisonment in the case relating to the mysterious disappearance of progressive Islamic cleric Chekannur Maulavi over two decades ago. According to the case investigated by the CBI, Maulavi, was abducted on July 29, 1993 from his home at Edapal in Malappuram district and later killed. The Central Bureau of Investigation special court here had found that after Maulavi was killed, his body was disposed of in some mysterious manner so that it can never be recovered. The CBI court in 2010 had sentenced V V Hamsa, the first accused in the case, to undergo double life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh, while the remaining eight accused were acquitted. A mound of soil caved in killing three women who were digging a pit in Rajasthan's Alwar district, police said. The women were digging the pit in Badod village when loose soil collapsed on them, Behror SHO Virendra Kumar said. The deceased were identified as Sita Devi Banjara (40), Juma Devi (19) and Bisa Devi (30), he said, adding that the bodies were handed over to the family members after post-mortem. A case was registered in this connection under CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death), the SHO said.
A Class 10 student of a government school was allegedly raped by four men, including the son of her landlord, who lured her with an offer to buy her a pizza, the police said Monday. The incident took place on Friday in east Delhi's Kalyanpuri, they added. The landlord's son offered to buy a pizza to lure the girl and took her to a room where three of his friends also joined them, said a senior police officer. They were under the influence of alcohol, he said. They allegedly forced themselves on her and threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed about the incident to anyone, he added. A special court in Pakistan on Monday ordered the formation of a high-level judicial commission to record Pervez Musharraf's statement in Dubai in a treason case after the former military dictator declined to appear before the court through video conferencing. General (retd) Musharraf, 75, who has been living in Dubai since March 2016, is facing the treason case for suspending the Constitution in 2007, a punishable offence for which he was indicted in 2014. A conviction for high treason carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) Monday stayed all proceedings against IL&FS and other group companies till its further order. The appellate tribunal order came over an urgent petition moved by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs after the Mumbai bench of NCLT had turned down its plea for 90 days moratorium over the loans taken by the IL&FS and its subsidiaries. A two-member NCLAT bench headed by Justice S J Mukhopadhaya has asked the top five lenders of IL&FS to submit their replies over the government's plea for 90 days moratorium. "Until further orders there should be stay of any proceedings by any parties against IL&FS and its 348 subsidiaries in any court of law or tribunal," said NCLAT. The appellate tribunal has directed to list the matter on November 13 for next hearing. Three alleged drug peddlers were arrested and charas and heroin seized in two incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Monday. Milap Chand alias Labbu, a resident of Birnoo village of Ramnagar, was arrested along with 300 grams of charas during patrolling in Udhampur district, a police spokesman said. He said Vijay Singh and Manpreet Singh were arrested after 25 grams of heroin worth Rs 1.25 lakh was recovered from them in Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu. They were riding a two-wheeler when they were stopped by police for checking, he said, adding 15 grams heroin was recovered from Vijay and 10 grams heroin was seized from Manpreet. The Kerala High Court Monday granted conditional bail to Roman Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal, arrested over allegations of repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting a nun. Granting the bail, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan directed the accused Bishop to surrender his passport and not to enter Kerala state except for appearing before the probe officer once in two weeks on Saturdays. This condition would be applicable till a charge sheet is filed in the case. Four persons have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a television journalist near his house in south Mumbai, police said Monday. The accused, all city residents aged between 20 and 25 years, were nabbed late Sunday night from Tardeo area, a senior police official said. Herman Gomes, working with a private TV channel, was returning home along with a friend in a taxi on Sunday when he saw four to six men waiting near his house in Gamdevi area. The men started abusing Gomes and later allegedly assaulted him and also hit his friend, as per the victim. Gomes was injured in the attack and later received six stitches near his eyes. A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to kill his fellow painter over a monetary dispute in the Kalkaji area here, police said Sunday. Kabir hit Jayant's head with and an alcohol bottle and later tried to slit his throat following an altercation between them over some payment dispute at Kalkaji's pocket 4 on October 6, they said. Satyanarayan, who runs a shop in Mangolpuri, alleged that he was shot at by a customer who was nursing a grudge against him for refusing to give 'gutka' (tobacco) to him (accused) without taking money, they said. However, police are verifying the victim's version and scanning the CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of the incident and identify the accused. The victim is being treated at the hospital.
