Pakistan's anti-corruption body arrests Shahbaz Sharif in Rs 1,400 cr housing scam

Pakistan's opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif was arrested by the country's anti-graft body on Friday for his alleged involvement in a Rs 1,400 crore housing scam, the latest setback to the embattled Sharif family. Shahbaz, 67, is the younger brother of ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is facing corruption charges in three cases. Daati Maharaj case: DCW notice to Delhi Police over 'wrongdoings'

The Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) on Friday issued a notice to the Delhi Police over 'wrongdoings' of its officials in the rape case lodged against self-styled godman Daati Maharaj.In its notice, the DCW stated that the "conduct of the Delhi Police in the case raises strong apprehensions and gives weight to the allegations that the police is in connivance with the accused and has not arrested the accused persons due to the strong links of the accused."Furthermore, the DCW has launched an inquiry into the matter."The Commission has observed that hardly any action has been taken against the wrongdoings of police officials. This encourages them to continue with such actions in the future as well. Official arrested for taking bribe to issue caste certificate

A revenue officer was caught while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.50 lakh to issue caste certificates in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, police said Friday. Prakash Dhangar, posted as Naaib Tehsildar at a Sub Divisional Office at Faizpur, was arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) Thursday. Dhangar had allegedly demanded Rs 1.80 lakh to issue caste certificates for the three children of the complainant. Later he allegedly settled for Rs 1.50 lakh. After the complainant approached the ACB, a trap was laid and Dhangar was caught red-handed while allegedly taking the money at his office.

Delhi-based event manager charred to death as car catches fire

A 45-year-old event manager from Delhi was burnt to death after his car caught fire on the Loni Bhopura Road in Sahibabad here, police said Friday. Naveen Kumar Das, a native of Indira Puri in Delhi, had allegedly paid the token amount for buying a plot of land in Delhi's Chhattarpur after which the incident took place Thursday, they said, as the deceased's brother alleged a "foul play". Some witnesses informed the police about the incident on 'Dial 100'. According to the eyewitnesses, the car caught fire and the person driving it could not come out. The deceased was identified by his belongings, police said. S P (City) Shlok Kumar said a fire tender reached the spot but by that time the car and its owner had been charred by then. DCW asks Delhi Police to give reason for not arresting Daati Maharaj

The DCW issued Friday a notice to the Delhi Police, asking them the reason behind not arresting self-styled godman Daati Maharaj who is accused of raping a disciple in his ashrams here. The woman had alleged she was sexually abused at Daati Maharaj's ashrams in Delhi and Rajasthan and also named two male disciples of the godman in her complaint. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had recently demanded the godman's arrest. In a statement, it asked the Delhi Police to give reason behind his non-arrest. It also asked the names and designations of the officers who approved the decision of not arresting Maharaj. It is apparent prima facie that the investigative officers concerned colluded with the accused. It is essential that strict action is taken against such officers, the statement said. Indian national, Nepali wife arrested in fake ATM racket

An Indian national and his Nepali wife were arrested Friday for their alleged involvement in a fake ATM racket, police said here. Last month police had busted the multi-million rupees racket in which three Indians and two Nepalese were arrested and 119 ATM cards, some cash and various equipments recovered from them. The couple arrested were the absconding members of the same gang. The gang had acquired millions of rupees from Nepal Investment Bank with the help fake ATMs. The arrested duo has been identified as Alaudin Khan and Mina, Kathmandu Metropolitan Police DSP Homendra Bogati said. Search is on for two more persons involved in the racket, he said.

Three SHOs have been removed, four constables suspended and two ex-policemen arrested as the Uttar Pradesh police cracked down on social media protests from within its own ranks over the action taken against two constables who allegedly shot dead an Apple executive here last week. HC acquits former TV anchor Suhaib Ilyasi in wife's murder case

The Delhi High Court Friday acquitted former TV anchor and producer Suhaib Ilyasi of the charge of killing his wife 18 years ago, saying the prosecution's case of murder was not established. A bench of justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel allowed the appeal of 52-year-old Ilyasi challenging his conviction and life imprisonment awarded by the trial court in December last year. The bench held there was nothing to suggest that Ilyasi deliberately delayed medical assistance for his wife Anju, who was first taken to a private hospital and then to the AIIMS where she was declared dead. The incident took place on the intervening night of January 10-11, 2000 when Anju was rushed to a hospital with stab wounds she received at her East Delhi residence. Woman nabbed for threatening to implicate a man in fake rape case

A middle-aged woman of Gujarat was arrested here on Friday for allegedly trying to extort Rs 13 lakh from a man by threatening to implicate him in a false rape case, police said. The 40-year-old woman had been allegedly trying to extort money from Balwinder Pal hailing from Ambala Cantt, a police official said. "She was threatening to implicate him in false rape case if she was not paid Rs 13 lakh," the official said. Two notorious criminals arrested under PSA in J&K

Two notorious criminals, allegedly involved in different offences, were arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in separate incidents on Friday, police said. Abdul Rashid, a resident of Rajouri district's Pargal village, has been arrested under the PSA as there were strong apprehensions that he could create disturbance during the upcoming Panchayat elections, a senior police officer said. Police had recently received information that Rashid, along with a few others, had in the past assaulted people going to a polling station to cast their votes, he said. Bajrang Dal functionary shot dead in Noida, 3 accused arrested

A 24-year-old Bajrang Dal functionary was allegedly killed by armed men here, police said on Friday. Following the killing, scores of people gathered at a police station to protest "police inaction" in the case. The police have initiated departmental inquiry into the allegations of inaction and suspended the in-charge of a police post, officials said. Three of the seven accused have been arrested, the police said. Hitachi, Hitachi Appliances settle case with Sebi, pay Rs 6.80L

Hitachi Ltd and Hitachi Appliances Inc Friday settled a case related to alleged violation of takeover norms with markets regulator Sebi after paying Rs 6.80 lakh. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had initiated adjudication proceedings against the two firms in August 2017 for allegedly violating SAST (Substantial Acquisition of Shares and Takeover) Regulations, according to two separate but similarly worded orders. The firms had submitted an application for settlement of the adjudication proceedings, following which they had a meeting with the internal committee of Sebi. The settlement terms proposed by the companies were considered by the internal committee and placed before the regulator's High Powered Advisory Committee (HPAC). The HPAC recommended the case for settlement on payment of Rs 6.80 lakh by the firms. This was also approved by the panel of Whole Time Members of Sebi. Hitachi Ltd along with Hitachi Appliances, Inc remitted the settlement amount last month .

DMK MLA, 5 others seek pre-arrest bail over derogatory remarks

Six DMK leaders, including local MLA N Karthik, have moved a court here seeking anticipatory bail in a case filed against them for alleged derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami. When the petitions came up for hearing Friday, the Principal District Judge In-Charge M Gunasekaran posted them to October 8 after the public prosecutor sought time. The cases were registered last week against DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi, MP, the MLA and five others for their alleged provocative speeches and derogatory remarks during a public meeting at Perur here on September 26. They have been charged with Indian Penal Code offences including promoting enmity between different groups and statements conducing to public mischief. Barring Bharathi, the six local DMK leaders approached the court for anticipatory bail.

HC stays further proceedings in defamation case against Stalin

The Madras High Court stayed Friday further proceedings in a defamation case against DMK chief M K Stalin filed in 2012. The court, however, directed him to appear before a special court set up exclusively to try cases against MPs and MLAs, and file an undertaking that he would present himself before it without waiting for summons, in case the petition was dismissed. Justice P N Prakash passed the interim order while admitting the petition filed by Stalin to quash the defamation proceedings before the special court. Noting that the case has been transferred to the special court, he directed Stalin to appear before it within two weeks from the date of receipt of the order and execute a bond for Rs 5,000 without surety. Thereafter he should give an undertaking to appear before the special court without waiting for summons in the event of dismissal of his petition, Justice Prakash said. Drug peddler arrested in J-K's Samba

An alleged drug peddler was arrested and intoxicant capsules were recovered from him in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district Friday, police said. A police party intercepted a person on suspicious grounds in Samba and during frisking, 1,000 intoxicant capsules were recovered from his possession, they said.
