88 killed in accidents on Samruddhi expressway since Dec 2022: Official

As many as 88 people have lost their lives in road accidents on Samruddhi Expressway in Maharashtra, including 25 on Saturday as a private bus caught fire after hitting the divider, since it was partially thrown open last December, an official said. Road hypnosis is cited as one of the causes of the accidents on the six-lane wide access-controlled expressway, the state highway police official said. Highway hypnosis or driving hypnosis is a condition when the driver zones out while driving a vehicle without remembering what occurred in that specific period. A total of 39 fatal accidents have occurred on the Nagpur-Mumbai expressway since last December, the official said citing data. Besides, 616 minor and major accidents have occurred on this expressway in which 656 people sustained serious and minor injuries, he said. Samruddhi Expressway accident: RTO report rules out tyre burst, speeding

A tyre burst could not have caused Saturday's bus accident on Samruddhi Expressway, in which 25 persons were charred to death, as there were no pieces of rubber or tyre markings at the scene, the Amravati Regional Transport Office (RTO) stated in its report. The RTO report, which was based on survivors' accounts, said there was no evidence (rubber pieces of tyres after burst) or tyre markings at the spot, and the impact marking was on the wheel disc, which was bent, and not on the tyre itself. Maharashtra has the highest number of NAAC-accredited colleges and universities in the entire country, an indication of the state's commitment to quality education, said an official associated with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Dr Devender Kawday, advisor to NAAC, was speaking to PTI on the sidelines of a programme in Thane on Saturday. NAAC is an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is responsible for assessing and accrediting higher education institutions based on predetermined quality parameters. Maharashtra has 1,957 NAAC accreditations, including 35 universities, followed by Karnataka with 1,028 institutes with the tag, he said. All other states are below the 1,000 mark, he said. Road traffic in some parts of Mumbai was affected and local train services slowed down to some extent on Friday morning as moderate to heavy rains continued to lash the metropolis and its suburbs, officials said. Ever since the southwest monsoon made its onset over Mumbai on June 25, the city has been getting showers. In the last 24 hours, Mumbai, its eastern suburbs and western suburbs received an average rainfall of 31 mm, 45 mm and 61 mm respectively, an official said. The city has been getting moderate to heavy showers since early Friday and the intensity of rainfall is more in the suburbs, which resulted in waterlogging at some locations, he said. Mumbai got 95% of rainfall recorded this month in just six days: IMD data

Mumbai received more than 95 per cent of the rainfall recorded this month so far between June 24 and 29, the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) data showed. Despite the heavy showers over the last six days, the city has recorded overall deficit in rains this month. The June normal for Colaba observatory in south Mumbai is 542.3 mm. This year, it recorded 395 mm rainfall, of which 371.4 mm rain was received during June 24 to 29. In the suburbs, Santacruz weather station's normal rainfall for June is 537.1 mm. This year, from June 1 to 29, it recorded 502.9 mm of rainfall, including 485 mm received between June 24 to 29. The southwest monsoon made onset over Mumbai on June 25 against the usual date of June 11.
