All eyes on Nagpur, former Cong bastion, due to 'development man' Gadkari

The battle for Nagpur Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra is among the most watched in the country due to the presence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, a hardcore RSS loyalist who has a legion of admirers for his development work as well as the penchant for talking straight. In 2014, he had defeated seven time MP Vilas Muttemwar by a margin of 2.84 lakh votes and retained the seat in 2019 by defeating current Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole by 2.16 lakh votes. Nagpur, with 22,18,259 voters comprising 11,10,840 males, 11,07,197 females and 222 third gender persons, is Vidarbha's largest city and has connection to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological mentor of the BJP, as well as Ambedkarism on the other end of the spectrum, since the legendary social reformer converted to Buddhism here. The seat was a bastion of the Congress, which has won it 13 out of 17 times. "Gadkari is part of the RSS ecosystem and is very close to the organisation. He is widely seen as an ...

RSS writes to EC, cops seeking action on man for maligning organisation

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has written to the Election Commission and police seeking action against a man who it said was maligning the name of the organisation. In a letter written on Friday, the secretary of RSS Nagpur Mahanagar said local resident Janardhan Moon had organised a press conference here in which he made an "absolutely false" claim that the organisation was supporting the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls. Moon had earlier tried to register a "sanstha" by the name 'RSS' but this was rejected by the assistant registrar of societies and his petitions challenging this rejection had been dismissed by the Bombay High Court, the letter said. It sought action against Moon for personation, cheating by personation, spreading rumours to create enmity and other offences and also wanted a directive to Youtube to delete a video of the press conference in which he is making such claims. "Janardhan Moon has no registered sanstha as RSS but only with a view to mislead he is ...

Maoist links case: Ex-DU professor Saibaba released from Nagpur jail

Former Delhi University professor G N Saibaba was released from the Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday, two days after the Bombay High Court acquitted him in an alleged Maoist links case. Saibaba was lodged in the jail here since 2017 after his conviction by a trial court in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district. Before that, he was in prison from 2014 to 2016 and was subsequently granted bail. "My health is very bad. I can't talk. I will have to first take medical treatment, and then only I will able to speak," Saibaba, who has been wheelchair-bound, told reporters after coming out of the jail. A family member was waiting for him outside the jail. The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Tuesday set aside the life sentence of Saibaba in the alleged Maoist links case, noting that the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt. The HC overturned Saibaba's sentence, terming the sanction for prosecution granted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) as "n
