India has arrived at the global high table and is positioning itself as a country that brings other nations together, according to experts. In its capacity as the current president of G20, India is hosting the annual summit of the influential grouping in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. This week India will host the G20, the first time a South Asian country has hosted this summit. India has long sought a place at the global high table and hosting these summits is symbolic that India has arrived, Aparna Pande, from the prestigious Hudson Institute think-tank, told PTI. The year 2023 is the year of India when the world's most populous country and fastest-growing economy has enjoyed the global spotlight for over nine months, she said. In December 2022, India was president of the UN Security Council. Delhi govt asks to Education dept employees to be on standby during G20

In view of the G20 summit, the Delhi government has ordered closure of all schools from September 7 to September 10 but asked the Education department employees to remain in the city these four days to meet any need for manpower during the event. The G20 Leaders Summit will be held on September 9-10 at the newly built international convention and exhibition centre -- Bharat Mandapam -- at Pragati Maidan here. "...public holiday (has been declared) in Delhi-NCR... (from) September 8 to September 10 on account of G20 Summit and prior to that, September 7 is a gazetted holiday on account of Janmashtami," the government said in a circular. "Keeping in view the magnitude of the event and the possible need of manpower for any deployment, it has been decided that all the staff members of the Education Department ... President Droupadi Murmu on Monday unveiled a 12-foot statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat here. She also inaugurated a Gandhi Vatika where statues of Mahatma Gandhi in different poses have been installed. At the event, the president said Mahatma Gandhi is an invaluable gift for the world community and his values and ideals gave a new direction to the world. "From South Africa's former president Nelson Mandela to Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. to US' former president Barack Obama accepted that Mahatma Gandhi's path of non-violence is the path of global development, she said addressing a gathering. Murmu said that Mahatma Gandhi's statues at Gandhi Vatika will inspire the visitors, especially the children. Delhi Police announces traffic advisory ahead of G20 summit in New Delhi

Lutyens' Delhi will be out of bounds for unauthorised persons for three days during the G20 summit next month, police officials said on Friday. An array of restrictions on movement of vehicular traffic have been announced in New Delhi district, areas around Rajghat and the regulated zone demarcated by the Ring Road, they said. Officials said the restrictions would be in place between 12 midnight on September 8 and 11.59 pm on September 10. However, movement of ambulances will be allowed and local residents of the area and tourists accommodated there will be permitted to move after presenting proper identification papers, they added. Extra vigil will be maintained by the police at the national capital's borders to prevent any unwarranted entry, while non-essential goods vehicles will not be allowed in the city, senior Delhi Police officers said in a press conference.
