India has arrived at the global high table and is positioning itself as a country that brings other nations together, according to experts. In its capacity as the current president of G20, India is hosting the annual summit of the influential grouping in New Delhi on September 9 and 10. This week India will host the G20, the first time a South Asian country has hosted this summit. India has long sought a place at the global high table and hosting these summits is symbolic that India has arrived, Aparna Pande, from the prestigious Hudson Institute think-tank, told PTI. The year 2023 is the year of India when the world's most populous country and fastest-growing economy has enjoyed the global spotlight for over nine months, she said. Delhi govt asks to Education dept employees to be on standby during G20

In view of the G20 summit, the Delhi government has ordered closure of all schools from September 7 to September 10 but asked the Education department employees to remain in the city these four days to meet any need for manpower during the event. The G20 Leaders Summit will be held on September 9-10 at the newly built international convention and exhibition centre -- Bharat Mandapam -- at Pragati Maidan here. "...public holiday (has been declared) in Delhi-NCR... (from) September 8 to September 10 on account of G20 Summit and prior to that, September 7 is a gazetted holiday on account of Janmashtami," the government said in a circular. "Keeping in view the magnitude of the event and the possible need of manpower for any deployment, it has been decided that all the staff members of the Education Department ... (should) remain in the city," it said. The circular further said that all employees must be available on phone and that no outstation leave will be permitted during this perio

Delhi Police announces traffic advisory ahead of G20 summit in New Delhi

Lutyens' Delhi will be out of bounds for unauthorised persons for three days during the G20 summit next month, police officials said on Friday. An array of restrictions on movement of vehicular traffic have been announced in New Delhi district, areas around Rajghat and the regulated zone demarcated by the Ring Road, they said. Officials said the restrictions would be in place between 12 midnight on September 8 and 11.59 pm on September 10. However, movement of ambulances will be allowed and local residents of the area and tourists accommodated there will be permitted to move after presenting proper identification papers, they added. Extra vigil will be maintained by the police at the national capital's borders to prevent any unwarranted entry, while non-essential goods vehicles will not be allowed in the city, senior Delhi Police officers said in a press conference. G20 countries allocated a staggering USD 1.4 trillion of public funds to support fossil fuels in 2022, aiming to counter the impact of their soaring prices due to the Ukraine war and strengthen energy reserves, a new study has said. The study by independent think tank International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and partners comes as G20 leaders prepare for their summit meeting scheduled for September 9-10 in New Delhi. India, the current G20 president, has made good progress, the study says,highlighting the cut in the fossil fuel subsidies by 76 percent from 2014 to 2022 while boosting support for clean energy. This puts India in a strong position to lead on this issue, the study says. Vistara airplane searched after threat, nothing suspicious found: Police

Authorities at the Delhi airport are searching a Vistara airplane, which was to leave for Pune, following a bomb threat, airport officials said on Friday. The airport call centre received a call around 7:30 am on Friday and the caller said that "three bombs have been kept in flight no. UK971 parked at gate no. 42 and they will explode in an hour". The call got disconnected immediately, official sources said. All passengers and crew of the flight have been deboarded and anti-sabotage checks are going on in an isolation bay at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, they said. Police, however, said the search operation is over and nothing suspicious has been found. The flight was to depart at 8:30 am. "A case is being registered and further investigation is underway," they said.

Indian Bank opens specialised startup cells in 10 cities across the country

Public sector Indian Bank on Wednesday said it has set up 10 startup cells across different centres in the country to serve its specialised banking requirements. Accordingly, the startup cells have been set up in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Chennai, New Delhi, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kanpur and Mumbai. Under the initiative, the Chennai-based public sector bank said a bouquet of tailor-made banking products and services were designed for the startups keeping in mind their unique and specialised banking requirements. It includes offering payment gateways, corporate credit cards and credit facilities apart from the existing products of the bank, a press release said. Deputy Speaker of Delhi Assembly Rakhi Birla on Wednesday said LG V K Saxena has raised objections to the convening of the two-day session and added that his observations are "not correct". Speaking in the Delhi Assembly, Birla said Saxena has written a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in which the LG has expressed his objections to the two-day session, saying rules on it were not being followed. The deputy speaker said that Saxena's observations were "not correct" since the session that commenced on Wednesday was in continuation of the previous session convened in April. Earlier, Saxena had also flagged "grave procedural lapses" in the session convened in April, which was called after Kejriwal received summons from the CBI for questioning him in connection with the excise policy case.
