State-owned power giant NTPC on Monday said it has won 3,445 MW of renewable energy (RE) projects in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. "NTPC wins 3,445 MW RE bids in FY 2023-24. This records 58 per cent of total RE tenders the company participated during the financial year which is the highest since it started participating in the bids," the company said. Currently, NTPC has 3.5 GW of RE operational capacity with over 20 GW (gigawatt) in the pipeline. NTPC Ltd, under the Ministry of Power, is the country's largest integrated power utility having 76 GW installed capacity that contributes 25 per cent of total electricity demand in India.
State-run power giant NTPC on Monday said it has added 3,924 MW power generation capacity in 2023-24, taking the total installed capacity to around 76GW. This (3,924 MW) includes the commissioning of the second unit in Bangladesh and maiden capacity addition by both its subsidiaries -- NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NREL), during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, a company statement said. In FY24, NTPC Ltd achieved an addition of 3,924 MW new capacity to its overall portfolio, elevating its cumulative installed capacity to almost 76 GW. NTPC is India's largest integrated power utility, contributing 1/4th of the power requirement of the country. State-owned power giant NTPC on Sunday said it has logged an all-time high annual electricity generation of 422 billion units in 2023-24. During 2023-24, the NTPC coal stations recorded a plant load factor (PLF, or capacity utilisation) of 77 per cent, NTPC said in a statement. According to the statement, NTPC Ltd, India's largest power generating company, recorded its highest-ever yearly generation of 422 billion units in 2023-24, registering a growth of nearly 6 per cent over 2022-23. The company had on September 1, 2023 recorded the highest-ever single-day generation of 1,428 million units. The stellar performance of NTPC units is a testimony to the expertise of NTPC engineers, operation and maintenance practices, and robust systems, the statement added.
State-owned power giant NTPC has closed down its Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I of 220 MW permanently. NTPC is India's largest power utility with a total installed capacity of 75,418 MW (including JVs), according to its official website. "Operation of NTPC Barauni Thermal Power Station Stage-I (2x110 MW) comprising of two Units (Unit 6 & 7) of 110 MW each (along with all Auxiliary systems except CHP, Switchyard, Ash Dyke and Township) shall be permanently discontinued w.e.f. 31st March 2024," a regulatory filing said on Saturday. Established in 1975, NTPC aims to become a 130 GW firm by 2032. NTPC acquired Barauni Thermal Power Station (720 MW) in District Begusarai, Bihar, from Bihar State Power Generation Company on December 15, 2018. At the time of acquisition, the 720 MW coal-based power station has 2 units of 110 MW each (under R&M-renovation and modernisation) and 2 units of 250 MW each (under construction). State-owned power giant NTPC on Tuesday said it has inked a pact with a Japanese agency for sourcing foreign currency loans of USD 200 million (JPY 30 billion or around Rs 1,650 crore).. Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), a government policy-based financial institution, will provide 60 per cent of the facility amount and the balance amount will be provided by other commercial banks under JBIC guarantee, a statement said. The agreements have been signed for a JPY 15 billion loan each for NTPC Ltd and NTPC Renewables Energy Ltd (NREL), it added. The facility has been extended under JBIC's initiative entitled Global action for Reconciling Economic growth and Environment preservation' (GREEN) for projects which ensure the conservation of the global environment.. NTPC on Monday said it will start commercial operations of second unit of its North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project on March 20. NTPC's North Karanpura Super Thermal Power (STPP) project is a coal-based power plant located in the Chatra district of Jharkhand. "Unit 2 (660 MW) of North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project (3x660 MW) is declared on commercial operation with effect from 00:00 hours of 20.03.2024," NTPC said in an exchange filing. With this, standalone and group commercial capacity of NTPC will become 59,298 MW and 75,418 MW, respectively. NTPC, under the Ministry of Power, is India's largest power generation company.
State-run power giant NTPC and its arm NTPC Green Energy signed two separate initial pacts to explore the possibility of developing supercritical thermal plants and renewables as well as green hydrogen in Rajasthan. The MoU between NTPC and Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam was signed to explore opportunities for adding supercritical units to the existing Chhabra Thermal Power Plant, a company statement said. Additionally, the Parties aim to implement measures to enhance efficiency and reduce the generation cost of the plant's existing units. Furthermore, the MoU also includes the undertaking of 15 to 20-year annuity-based Renovation and Modernization (R&M) of old thermal units of RVUNL by NTPC or its affiliates. The MoU between NGEL ( NTPC Green Energy) and RVUNL was signed for development of Renewable Energy Projects and Green Hydrogen Derivatives up to 25 GW and 1 million Ton capacities respectively in the State of Rajasthan.

NTPC Green Energy Limited has signed a joint venture agreement with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited to develop renewable power parks and projects in Uttar Pradesh. The renewable energy (RE) power generated from the proposed joint venture company (JVC) will meet the Renewable Generation Obligation (RGO) of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL), NTPC said in an exchange filing. "Wholly-owned subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL) has signed a joint venture agreement with UPRVUNL on March 4, 2024, in Lucknow for development of renewable power parks and projects in Uttar Pradesh," it said. NGEL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-owned power giant NTPC with an operational capacity of over 3.4 GW and 26 GW in the pipeline, including 7 GW under implementation.

State-owned NTPC on Monday said it has crossed 100 million tonne (MT) coal production mark from its captive mines. The milestone was achieved on February 25, 2024, NTPC said in a statement. "Coal mining subsidiary NTPC Mining Ltd (NML) has produced 100.04 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) of coal since coal production started in its first coal mine Pakri Barwadih on January 1, 2017," the company said. While the first 50 MT coal production was achieved in 1,995 days on June 19, 2022, the next 50 MT coal production was achieved in 617 days only, NTPC said. The coal production from its captive mines contributes to NTPC's fuel security and ensuring efficient supply, it said. NTPC Mining Ltd has five operational captive coal mines namely Pakri Barwadih, Chatti Bariatu and Kerandari Coal Mines in Jharkhand, Dulanga Coal Mine in Odisha and Talaipalli Coal Mine in Chhattisgarh. NTPC arm NGEL has signed an agreement with the government of Andhra Pradesh for the development of an integrated green hydrogen hub.
