Ex-NC leader Mattu elected Srinagar Mayor with support from BJP, Peoples Conference
Former National Conference leader Junaid Azim Mattu, who quit the party to contest the urban local body polls in Jammu and Kashmir, was elected Mayor of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Tuesday with the support from the BJP and the Peoples Conference. Mattu secured 40 votes while Congress candidate for the mayoral post Ghulam Rasool Hajam got 26 votes in the 74-member SMC, Commissioner of the civic body Peer Hafizullah told PTI. Mattu resigned from the primary membership of the National Conference (NC) in September after the party decided not to contest the urban local body polls till the Centre made clear its position on Article 35-A of the Constitution, which has been challenged before the Supreme Court. UN documents civilian casualties during recent election
The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan says in a new report that 56 civilians were killed and 379 others wounded in attacks during the recent parliamentary election. The UN report says 52 civilians were killed and 339 others were wounded in election day violence. The rest were killed or wounded in the days after the election when delayed polling took place in some provinces. The numbers reveal that more civilians were harmed in recent election violence than in four previous Afghanistan national elections, according to the report. The numbers do not include casualties from violence during the 3-week campaigning period. The report documents numerous attacks by insurgents, mainly Taliban fighters, directed at densely populated civilian areas during the elections.

Japan says it is pleased to be temporarily spared from penalties as the U.S. resumes sanctions on Iran. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, however, told reporters Tuesday that Japan will monitor and analyze any possible impact the sanctions may have to make sure the sanctions do not adversely affect Japanese companies. President Donald Trump's administration reinstated all remaining sanctions on Iran on Monday. A US ally, Japan is one of eight major importers of Iranian oil that received waivers on immediate penalties. Suga said Japan's exclusion reflects Washington's consideration of Tokyo's repeated requests to minimize the impact of sanctions on Japanese companies.
