A large number of community health officials posted in rural areas of Maharashtra assembled at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai on Wednesday for a one-day strike to press for their various demands including a permanent government job. Their other demands include reduction in workload, allotment of wages on time and insurance by the state government. Community health officers (CHOs) work in rural areas at primary health centres. They are currently working on a contract. Although their contracts get renewed, the CHOs have now demanded to make them permanent employees of the state government, sources said. Members of various Left organisations staged a protest at the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus on Thursday against the "hooliganism" of the RSS-affiliated ABVP, a day after students claimed that stones were hurled at them during the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots. The students, affiliated to the Students' Federation of India, Democratic Students' Federation, All India Students Association and other organisations raised slogans against the ABVP and held placards that read 'rise in the rage against ABVP hooliganism'. The minimum retirement age to be entitled to a full pension is expected to be gradually increased from 62 to 64 or 65, in line with a longstanding pledge by President Emmanuel Macron. Farmers have started converging at the Ramleela Ground here for the 'Kisan Garjana' rally to demand various relief measures from the government. A note issued by the organisers -- Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), a branch of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) -- said "the government will face trouble if it did not heed the farmers' demand in time". It said farmers are reaching the Ramleela Maidan from across the country in buses, tractors and motorcycles to demand remunerative prices for their crops based on the input cost. The farmers have also called for a rollback of GST on all kinds of farming activities and the permission for commercial production of genetically modified crops. Several MLAs, MPs and other politicians took part in a massive protest here on Sunday to demand compensation for the Bhungra cylinder blast victims from the state government. On December 8, a cylinder blast in Bhungra of Shergarh division of the district triggered a fire leaving about 50 people injured. At least 35 of those injured in the incident had succumbed by Sunday. The protesters gathered under the banner of Bhungra Victims' Sangharsh Samiti marched to the district collectorate from the MG Hospital morgue waving black flags and wearing black headbands and ribbon on arms. Delhi Police on Sunday issued a traffic advisory ahead of a 'Kisan Garjana' rally at Ramleela Ground here. According to the advisory, the rally will be organised by the Bhartiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), on Monday from 11 am to 6 pm. As per the organisers, around 50,000 to 55,000 people are likely to participate in the gathering through 700 to 800 buses, and 3,500 to 4,000 through private vehicles, it stated. The diversion points are Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Marg, Mirdard Chowk, Minto Road, Ajmeri Gate, Chaman Lal Marg, Delhi Gate, JLN Marg, roundabout Kamala Market to Hamdard Chowk, Bhavbhuti Marg and Paharganj Chowk, it said. Iranian authorities arrested one of the country's most famous actresses on charges of spreading falsehoods about nationwide protests that grip the country, state media said Saturday.
