Religious activity can't be allowed on court premises: judge

Vadodara District Judge J C Doshi has asked the local bar association not to allow any kind of religious activity on the court premises, saying it violates "principles of secularism". Doshi stated this in a letter to Baroda Bar Association president Nalin Patel, after two rooms in the newly-constructed court building were opened to allow Muslim lawyers to offer namaaz. "As the judiciary represents the Indian state, showcasing the symbology of one particular religion amounts to violating the principle of secularism," Doshi said in the letter, which was shared with media by Patel. Earlier, Kedar Biniwale, secretary of the BBA, had provided two rooms to Muslim lawyers for offering prayers during the ongoing month of Ramazan, which some members of the association had opposed. Biniwale argued that there was no mosque nearby where Muslim lawyers could offer prayers. However, judge Doshi said in the letter that India is a secular country, and "fundamental rights make it a ...

Sunni extremists in Pakistan have demolished a historical mosque belonging to the Ahmadiyya community in Punjab province, the latest attack on the minority group in the Muslim-majority country. A persecuted minority sect, the Ahmadiyya community was declared non-Muslims in Pakistan through a constitutional amendment in 1974 during the tenure of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. The latest mob attack took place in Sialkot last night. As the local municipal administration started demolishing a private property of an Ahmadiyya follower, about 600 miscreants demolished the nearby mosque later. Ahmadiyya spokesman Saleemuddin said in a statement that the mob launched the attack at about 11 PM and it continued till 3 AM (local time). "The place of worship and the house that has been demolished by the mob in Sialkot have great historical significance for members of the Ahmadiyya community all over the world," he said. London mosque become first to declare cryptocurrencies halal

A mosque in East London has become the first in the UK to declare cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, halal and said it would accept donations in such a form, according to a media report today. Cryptocurrency is a form of digital money that is designed to be secure and, in many cases, anonymous. It is a currency associated with the internet that uses cryptography, the process of converting legible information into an almost uncrackable code, to track purchases and transfers. Religious advisers at the Masjid Ramadan in Dalston, east London, said the currency is halal, or acceptable in the eyes of Allah, if it is "transacted in a lawful manner". "Any money or currency is neither halal permissible nor haram impermissible. Guidance is about the value which it represents. If money is transacted in a lawful manner then it is halal," Zayd al Khair, a religious adviser at the mosque, told 'The Daily Telegraph'. "We do not always know the source of cash donations, but we take these in good ...

Rare silk Koran helps preserve Afghanistan's cultural heritage

One of the only Korans ever made from silk fabric has been completed in Afghanistan -- a feat its creators hope will help preserve the country's centuries-old tradition of calligraphy. Each of the Islamic holy book's 610 pages was produced by hand in a painstaking process that took a team of 38 calligraphers and artists specialising in miniatures nearly two years to finish. Bound in goat leather and weighing 8.6 kilograms (19 pounds), the Koran was produced by Afghan artisans, many of them trained at British foundation Turquoise Mountain in Kabul. "Our intention was to ensure that calligraphy does not die out in this country -- writing is part of our culture," Khwaja Qamaruddin Chishti, a 66-year-old master calligrapher, told AFP in a cramped office inside Turquoise Mountain's labyrinthine mud-brick and wood-panelled complex. With the Koran considered a sacred text, calligraphy is highly venerated in Islam and Islamic art. "When it comes to art we cannot put a price on it. God has ...

Pope to China Catholics: Make gestures showing communion

Pope Francis is urging Chinese Catholics to make gestures of reconciliation that show they are in full communion with the Holy See. Francis made the comments during his Wednesday general audience, amid what appears to be another stall in the Vatican's longstanding efforts to reach a deal with Beijing over the appointment of bishops. Francis led thousands of people in prayer that Chinese Catholics can live their faith serenely "and can make gestures of fraternity, harmony and reconciliation in full communion" with the pope. China's government bars Catholics from having contact with the Vatican and allows worship only in government-monitored churches. Millions remain loyal to the pope and worship in secret, underground churches, whose priests and parishioners are frequently detained and harassed.

US says ambassador tricked over Jerusalem picture

The newly-opened US embassy in Jerusalem has said ambassador David Friedman was duped into being pictured receiving a photo of east Jerusalem with the revered Al-Aqsa mosque erased. In a picture published yesterday night by ultra-Orthodox Jewish news site Kikar Hashabbat, the Islamic shrine on a flashpoint site holy to both Muslims and Jews is replaced by a simulation of a Jewish temple. The picture could further inflame anger amongst Palestinians, already furious over last week's transfer of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem after Washington recognised the disputed city as capital of Israel. A US embassy statement said the doctored image was pushed in front of Friedman without his consent during a visit to a charitable institution in Bnei Brak, near Tel Aviv. "Ambassador Friedman was not aware of the image thrust in front of him when the photo was taken," it said. "He was deeply disappointed that anyone would take advantage of his visit to Bnei Brak to create ...
