Plea seeks direction to police to file case against Kanimozhi

A petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking that the police be directed to file a case against DMK MP Kanimozhi, lyricist Vairamuthu and Dravida Kazhagam leader Veeramani for delivering speeches that allegedly hurt Hindu religious sentiments. The petition was filed by G Radhakrishnan, who described himself as a social worker campaigning for the rights of deprived Hindus. The petitioner alleged speeches by the three had hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. When the plea came up today, Justice M S Ramesh directed the government to give its reply on March 1, and adjourned the matter till then. The petitioner submitted that hurting the feelings of any religion was against the Constitution of India. Despite filing a complaint, the police did not take any action which prompted him to move court, the petitioner said.

Chinese scholar slams claim that Buddha was of Chinese origin

A Chinese scholar on religions has slammed an article that claimed Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was actually of Chinese origin, saying it lacks evidence and amounts to abuse of patriotism. State-run Global Times today reported that an article has gone viral on the Chinese Internet since January 1, claiming that a Nepalese scholar named Amuhanson discovered that Sakyamuni (Buddha) was actually Chinese and not of "Indian nationality". The report said the same article was carried by Chinese news portal sohu.com in November last year without mentioning the name of any Nepalese scholar. The sohu.com article suggested that it was originally written by Li Liangsong, a professor from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and an expert on Buddhist medicine. Li listed 10 main reasons for his claim, such as the fact that Nepal, where Lumbini, the birthplace of Budha, was located used to be a "special district" of the ancient Chinese empire, and the content of Buddhist Scriptures .

US' Christian evangelist dies aged 99

America's well known religious figure the Rev Billy Graham, popularly known as the Christian evangelist died due to his prolonged illness on Wednesday.The Guardian quoted Graham's spokesman Mark DeMoss as saying that he was suffering from cancer, pneumonia and other ailments, died at his home in North Carolina on Wednesday morning. He was 99.Graham, who abandoned narrow fundamentalism to engage broader society, had a huge following.He had also been a counsellor to many U.S. presidents.

Three drown in water-pit

Three men today drowned in a water pit at Mandaripeta village here, police said. The incident occurred when the trio had gone to the water-pit to wash their clothers, said K Naresh, Sub Inspector of Police, Shayampet. The deseased have been idenrtified as M Krishna Vamshi (21), Sai Krishna (19) and Suneel (18). Their bodies were fished out and sent for post-mortem, he said, adding a probe was on.

File case against seer if cognisable offence made out: Madras HC to police

The Madras High Court today directed police to register a case if a cognisable offence was made out in a complaint filed by a fringe group against a seer in Tamil Nadu for making some controversial comments. Justice M S Ramesh was passing orders on a plea filed by the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam seeking registration of a criminal case against the seer for making the comments while condemning Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu for his 'objectionable' remarks about Goddess Andal. The group's Namakkal district organiser, Vairavel, submitted that the recent remarks of Satagopa Ramanuja Jeeyar of Manavala Mamunigal Mutt at Srivilliputhur that he too knew "how to hurl soda bottles" amounted to instigating violence. Saeid Rezaie, one of the seven members of the former leadership group of the Baha'is in Iran who were imprisoned due to religious beliefs, has been released at the completion of his sentence, an organisation representing the community in India said today. Rezaie and six of his colleagues were arrested in 2008 after an early-morning raid on their homes, it said. They were part of the ad hoc group known as the Yaran, or the friends, which tended to the basic spiritual and material needs of the Iranian Baha'is community, said the statement issued by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahais of India. Ayodhya case: 3 plaintiffs rule out out-of-court settlement

Three plaintiffs in Babri Masjid/Ram Janmbhoomi case have said they will not accept any out-of-court settlement. At a gathering of local Muslims here in which the plaintiffs - Haji Mahboob , Iqbal Ansari and Mohammad Umar -- were present, a resolution was passed that the"Muslims will not shift the mosque" to any other site or gift the land to any party, according to a press statement issued after the meeting which was held on Saturday. It said the Hindus can build Ram temple on Ram Chabootra in the outer court yard of Babri Masjid. The resolution also rejected any out-of-court settlement in Babri Masjid/Ram Janmbhoomi case and said that Muslims will only obey the Supreme Court verdict, it said.
