Singapore suspends national meal programme following food poisoning

Singapore on Thursday temporarily halted a two-day-old national preparedness initiative which involves ready-to-eat meals, following cases of food poisoning at the School of the Arts (SOTA) arising from the meals. In a joint statement, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), together with the Ministry of Education (MOE), Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) and food caterer SATS, said it will pause the Food Resilience Preparedness Programme as a precautionary measure until investigations on the SOTA gastroenteritis cases are concluded. Channel News Asia first reported about the gastroenteritis cluster at SOTA on Wednesday, believed to be linked with food given at the campus. A total of 20 students developed symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting after consuming the meals. The ready-to-eat meals were originally intended to be distributed to over 100,000 students and teachers from more than 90 schools as part of this year's Food Resilience Preparedness Programme, an initiative led by ..

Singapore's Indian-origin leader Pritam Singh found guilty of lying in Parl

Singapore's Indian-origin Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh was found guilty on Monday of giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee, a verdict that could see him disqualified from Parliament and contesting a general election this year. In the verdict delivered in the State Courts, Deputy Principal District Judge Luke Tan convicted Singh of the two charges against him. The charges against Singh relate to his handling of Raeesah Khan, a former lawmaker from his party, who lied to Parliament in a separate case. Singh, 48, was accused of wilfully giving two false answers to the Committee of Privileges (COP) during its inquiry into Khan's case on December 10 and December 15, 2021. The case stems from Singh's handling of Khan's false claim in Parliament about accompanying a sexual assault victim to the police station. Singh faces up to three years in jail, a fine of up to SGD7,000 (USD 5,290), or both for each charge. Singh's trial began four months ago. Politically, the

Singapore passes new law on racial harmony, to check foreign interference

A new law consolidating existing statutes to preserve racial harmony and providing safeguards against foreign interference has been passed unanimously in the Singapore Parliament. New safeguards against foreign interference will be introduced in multi-racial Singapore where some 300 clan and business associations are to be designated as race-based entities subject to disclosures, such as receiving foreign donations. The law was passed on Tuesday. While the authorities already had powers to deal with conduct that threatened racial harmony, Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam said the Bill brought these powers together in one place, while affirming the importance of racial harmony in the multi-ethnic city-state. The new law empowers the authorities to issue restraining orders against individuals involved in making content that prejudices Singapore's racial harmony, taking close reference from the existing Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (MRHA). It also introduces a commu
