India to address death bowling concerns in final tune-up ahead of T20 WC

India will be looking to round off their T20 World Cup preparation with a marked improvement in their death bowling besides providing crucial game time to its untested players in the three-match series against South Africa, beginning here on Wednesday. India skipper Rohit Sharma, expectedly, singled out death bowling as an area that requires improvement following the series win over Australia. The hosts will be without two of their key bowlers, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been rested ahead of the ICC event next month. Mohammad Shami, who is one of the World Cup reserves, is yet to recover from COVID-19 and will be missing the three games against the Proteas after being unavailable the rubber against Australia. Harshal Patel did not have the best of times in his comeback series against Australia but he will be expected to get back to his best in the final three games before the World Cup. His career economy rate stands at 9.05 but he conceded more than 12 runs pe

S Africa: Prez Cyril calls meet on electricity crisis, nationwide blackouts

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had an urgent meeting scheduled with his Cabinet on Wednesday to discuss the country's electricity crisis, which has led to unprecedented levels of nationwide power blackouts in Africa's most developed economy. The troubled state-owned power utility Eskom, which produces about 95% of the country's electricity, is implementing scheduled, rolling blackouts in an attempt to save electricity while struggling to keep its ageing and poorly maintained coal-fired power stations operational. Ramaphosa returned home to chair the meeting with his ministers after attending the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London. He cancelled his trip to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. Eskom had started implementing Stage 6 power cuts, a level that means businesses and homes go without electricity for more than 10 hours a day. The company has since reduced the level to Stage 5, which requires South Africans to go without power for up to eight .

US Prez Biden calls South Africa a vital voice despite Russia stance

President Joe Biden praised South Africa as a vital voice on the global stage as he hosted President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday at the White House for talks that were expected to touch on the two nations' differences on Russia's war in Ukraine and more. In a brief appearance before the media at the start of their meeting, Biden made no direct mention that Ramaphosa is among African leaders who have maintained a neutral stance in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. South Africa abstained from a United Nations vote condemning Russia's actions and calling for a mediated settlement. But the president seemed to offer a subtle recognition that the two countries have their differences. We really need to make sure we fully understand one another, said Biden, who heaped praise on Ramaphosa for his country's leadership on fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of climate change and other issues. Ahead of the meeting, South Africa's international relations minister, Naledi Pando

S Africa moves laws to avoid being grey-listed by financing watchdog

The South African government has introduced some urgent changes to its laws to avoid the country being grey-listed by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog. As a policy-making body, the Paris-based 200-member FATF works to generate the necessary political will to bring about national legislative and regulatory reforms in these areas. The Minister of Finance has tabled General Laws (Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Terrorism Financing) Amendment Bill in Parliament, which will now follow the process of public comments, convening hearings, making amendments and passing the Bill. A statement released by the Treasury said that this demonstrated the commitment of the South African government to Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) and addressing the deficiencies identified by FATF's Mutual Evaluation Report (MER) of South Africa, which was published in October 2021. When enacted into law, it

Amid rising Monkeypox cases, South African Minister expresses concern

Monkeypox virus remains a cause for concern to South Africa, Health Minister Joe Phaahla said on Friday, amid rising number of cases in the country. Although monkeypox causes less severe illness, the current rising numbers and the positive cases has become a cause of concern and therefore, we cannot ignore it," Phaahla told media here. I'm saying this because on August 17 we got a report from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) that we have had our fifth positive case of monkeypox, which was in a 28-year-old male from Johannesburg with a travel history of Europe, the Netherlands and Spain as well, Phaahla said. Phaahla said that at this stage no link has been established between these five cases, but the NICD is investigating a possible link between the last two cases as both persons infected had been to Spain, which has already recorded 5,000 positive cases and two deaths resulting from monkeypox. The minister emphasised that the four earlier cases had been mil
