Kalanithi Maran vs Ajay Singh: Blow to SpiceJet as SC dismisses petition

July 28 The Supreme Courttoday dismissed the appeal of Spicejet challenging the order of the Delhi highcourt directing it to deposit Rs 529 crore in a share transfer dispute withmedia baron Kalanithi Maran. The bench headed byJustice Rohinton Nariman heard both counsel for Ajay Singh, who controlsSpicejet, and Abhishek Singhvi for Maran before rejecting the appeal. As aresult, Spicejet is obliged to deposit Rs 250 crore in cash and Rs 329 in bankguarantees. The payment schedule was to start in August. According to Spicejet, the high court orderwas not only wrong in law but harsh as it amounted to infliction of 'civildeath' on the company. It pleaded thatthe order has the effect of undoing all efforts of the new management andsaddles the company with huge liabilities with fatal consequences.
