Leap of Faith: Inside the stadium, temple that "changed" Indian team's fortune

In any sphere of life, it's common for people to seek divine intervention when the chips are down and sport is no different. However, a temple inside an international cricket stadium premises? That's the sight one is greeted with on entering the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, which is hosting on the ongoing second Test between India and England. On normal days, it might escape the attention but on a match day -- like the ongoing one -- it is a vibrant sight. Asked about the story behind the temple, its priest Hanumanth Sharma claimed, "This temple was built (in 2011) because neither the Indian team nor the now defunct IPL franchise Deccan Chargers were winning their matches at this ground. "It was proving to be an inauspicious ground for the home teams. Then it was found out that there was 'Vaastu Dosham' (problem in architecture as per ancient Hindu architectural system)," he said. "Lord Ganesha is the God of Vaastu Shastra. You can check the records and after 2011, the

Ashwin, Kuldeep strike as West Indies reach 86/3 at lunch on Day 1

Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav asked probing questions as West Indies were in trouble at 86 for 3 at lunch on the first day of the second Test against India here on Friday. At the stroke of lunch, Shai Hope (36) was dismissed by Umesh Yadav (1/36 in 9.3 overs) as India gained upper hand at the end of the opening session. Ashwin (10.2-7-7-1) and Kuldeep (1/21 in 8 overs) removed openers Kieran Powell (22) and Kraigg Brathwaite (14) even as the visiting batsmen were ready to curb their impetuosity and display more stomach for a fight. The match did not start on a bright note for India as debutant pacer Shardul Thakur left the field complaining groin strain having merely bowled 10 deliveries. Thakur's absence turned India into four-man attack. Opener Powell, who scored 83 in the second innings at Rajkot in the first Test, had four boundaries. He successfully reviewed a leg before call off Ashwin's delievery as TV replays showed a big inside edge. But, Powell did not survive long ..

True grit: New Aussie era hailed after sandpaper shame

Australia's battling draw against Pakistan has ushered in a new era for a team desperate to redeem itself in the wake of the sandpaper cheating scandal, media said Friday. In their first Test outing since the ball-tampering fiasco in South Africa, the Australians salvaged a draw in the opening Test in Dubai thanks to a dogged 141 from batsman Usman Khawaja. While such a result would not normally be cause for celebration, ABC columnist Richard Hinds praised the way Australia refused to concede defeat when facing a seemingly impossible task. He said it was a promising start for the Test team under new coach Justin Langer, the former batsman who took over after predecessor Darren Lehmann quit in disgrace. "No one knows more about the value of perseverence and preparation than Langer, given his wonderful career was a triumph of almost torturous dedication and bloody defiance," Hinds wrote. "If this really was a Langer-era performance, let the dot balls flow." A common theme in reports was

Germany boss Loew under pressure for Dutch, French tests

Joachim Loew faces the toughest tests of his 12-year tenure as Germany head coach in the forthcoming Nations League matches away to the Netherlands and world champions France. After earning himself some breathing space following a 0-0 draw with Didier Deschamps' France in Munich last month, Loew must take points from the Dutch on Saturday in Amsterdam, and French in Paris next Tuesday, to restore his tarnished reputation. His former captain Michael Ballack turned on him this week, claiming he was "surprised" Loew kept his job in the wake of Germany's World Cup debacle when they crashed out after the group stage. Jurgen Klinsmann, Germany's head coach with Loew as his assistant at the 2006 World Cup, also ramped up the pressure by saying a semi-final berth at the 2020 European Championship is now a "minimum requirement". "It's expected 'Jogi' will redeem himself with victories and by reaching the semi-finals of the next Euro," Klinsmann told magazine Sport Bild. The former striker, 54,

Alcacer makes his point as Spain crush Wales

Paco Alcacer made his case for a regular place in the Spain team as the on-loan Borussia Dortmund forward struck twice in his country's 4-1 rout of Wales on Thursday. With Diego Costa injured and Rodrigo on the bench, Alcacer seized his chance to impress Spain boss Luis Enrique in his first international appearance since March 2016. The 25-year-old maintained his blistering club form to leave the Wales defence in tatters in a one-sided friendly at the Principality Stadium. Alcacer netted twice in the first half to make it eight goals in 14 Spain appearances, while Sergio Ramos and Marc Bartra were also on target for the visitors. Alcacer has hit seven goals in four matches for Dortmund since joining on loan from Barcelona, where he struggled to break into the team and was rarely picked by Enrique during his time in charge at the Camp Nou. Enrique might be having a change of heart after this predatory display from Alcacer on an emotional night for Spain, who stood before kick-off for a
