Injured Bopanna may be forced to miss Rogers Cup too ahead of Asian Games

Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna, who is out of action since Wimbledon, says he may have to pull out of Rogers Cup to let his shoulder heal ahead of the Asian Games. If Bopanna misses the ATP 1000 series event, it would mean that he will head to the Asian Games without any competitive match since Wimbledon Championships. Bopanna and his French partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin's conceded their men's doubles second round after the Indian suffered an injury, early this month. The injury has already forced him to miss at least three ATP World Tour events including the Bastad event, where he had planned to play alongside Divij Sharan, who will be his men's doubles partner at the Asian Games. "I suffered a minor injury which is healing well. Doctors advised me to take three weeks off. Yesterday, was my first (practice) day. Today, I hit the ball in the afternoon, and on Tuesday I am supposed to serve and see how it is," Bopanna told PTI at the sidelines of a promotional event. "If I am ...

Mourinho frustrated with under-strength United squad

Jose Mourinho has hit out at Manchester United's transfer window inactivity after watching his under-strength squad crash to a 4-1 defeat against Liverpool in the latest stop of their pre-season US tour. Mourinho said he expected to bring in only one new player before the new Premier League season kicks off despite submitting a list of five transfer targets to club bosses earlier this year. United's failure to bolster their resources and the absence of several key first team players following the World Cup has forced Mourinho to field several untested youngsters during the US tour. On Saturday, United were torn apart by Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool at Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the Red Devils' penultimate game before facing Real Madrid in Miami on Tuesday. They face a further friendly against Bayern Munich in Munich on August 5. Mourinho, who has become increasingly downbeat during the tour, cut a frustrated figure as he spoke about the club's relative inactivity in the transfer market. "I ..

In the women's competition, Pinki was the lone gold medallist in the 55kg category with her 6-3 win over Ukraine's Olga Shnaider in the final but Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik endured a disappointing result as she failed to reach the medal round in the 62kg category. Rabada, Shamsi set up South Africa's big win in first one-day

Bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi starred in South Africa's convincing five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first one-day international in Dambulla on Sunday. Rabada and Shamsi claimed four wickets each to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 193, a total the visitors passed in just 31 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. South Africa's chase depended on an 86-run third-wicket stand between Quinton de Kock and skipper Faf du Plessis, who both hit 47. Off spinner Akila Dananjaya struck at crucial moments to get three wickets but Jean-Paul Duminy ensured a swift chase with his 32-ball unbeaten 53. But it was a superb opening pace spell from Rabada and Shamsi's career-best figures of 4-33 with his left-arm wrist spin that led South Africa to their first victory on tour after being swept aside in a two-Test series. Sri Lanka's innings lasted just 34.3 overs but batsman Kusal Perera hit a gritty 81 to lift the hosts from a precarious 36-5 following their decision to bat ...

Indian pace attack has enough firepower to make up for Bhuvi's absence: Darren Gough

Former England pacer Darren Gough feels India have enough firepower in their pace attack to cover for the absence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah in the first Test beginning here on Wednesday. Gough spoke about the different options available in front of skipper Virat Kohli in both pace and spin departments, and remarked that India's well-rounded attack is suitable for any pitch that is laid out in this ensuing series, despite missing Bhuvneshwar for three Tests and Bumrah for the series opener. "Bhuvneshwar is a big loss and he wasn't at his best during the ODI series because he was carrying an injury. But India aren't a side anymore that is dependent on one bowler. Earlier, they were dependent on Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath or Zaheer Khan, that is no longer the case. India are suited for all sorts of wickets, and they look prepared and geared up for this Test series," Gough told PTI. "Today, you have to be on top of your game to beat India, whether you are playing at home ..

Tuchel treads carefully over Neymar play-acting

Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel pledged to keep his conversations with Neymar behind closed doors on Sunday as he weighs up how best to deal with the combustible star. Neymar, the world's most expensive player, was widely lampooned for his play-acting at the World Cup, but Tuchel refused to reveal if he would raise it with the Brazilian. "I'm young -- well, not so young -- but I know when I speak about Neymar there's a lot of potential to every word that I say," said the 44-year-old German. "So the best thing when I speak to him about something that we do this in closed rooms." Tuchel's arrival at PSG follows reports of discord between Neymar and fellow forwards Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani, as well as ex-coach Unai Emery. Tuchel said he needed a close relationship with Neymar, whose difficult World Cup ended when Brazil were stunned by Belgium in the quarter-finals. "I'm very sure that I have a connection with him and I'm very sure that I need to have a connection with ...

Say I'm your No.1: goalkeeper Buffon faces fight at PSG

Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon has a fight on his hands for the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper's shirt as coach Thomas Tuchel revealed he had not yet decided who was his number one. Buffon has made his first move abroad at the age of 40 but faces stiff competition at the French club, which shares his ambition of a first Champions League title. Tuchel has an embarrassment of goalkeeping riches including Alphonse Areola, a member of France's World Cup-winning squad, German international Kevin Trapp, Sebastien Cibois and Remy Descamps. "He's (Buffon) not afraid to fight for his place, Kevin and Alphonse are not afraid to fight for their place," Tuchel said in Singapore, ahead of Monday's friendly with Atletico Madrid. "This is the kind of competition that I would love to have in every other position." The German added: "This is a situation we need to handle relaxed but clearly. When everybody is there and everybody has shown up and everybody is healthy at the top level, then it's time to .

Sindhu, Srikanth lead Indian challenge at World Championship

Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu will look to break the jinx of losing major finals and better the colour of her medal when she spearheads the Indian challenge at the prestigious World Championship, starting here tomorrow. With two bronze medals in 2013 and 2014 and a silver last year, Sindhu has an impressive record at the World Championship. Chelsea edge past Inter Milan on penalties

Chelsea beat Inter Milan 5-4 on penalties as goalkeeper Willy Caballero saved from Milan Skriniar in the shootout following a 1-1 draw in their opening game of the International Champions Cup. Spain international Pedro struck after just eight minutes in Nice, slotting in a rebound after Inter keeper Samir Handanovic saved from a lively Alvaro Morata. It was a second goal in as many games for Pedro, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Saturday, after he netted the winner in Monday's 1-0 victory over Perth Glory in Australia. Inter levelled early in the second half through Roberto Gagliardini, whose drilled shot proved too much for Argentina's Caballero after fellow half-time substitute Tiemoue Bakayoko gave the ball away. New Chelsea signing Jorginho nearly won it with a curling effort that forced Handanovic into a fine sprawling stop, while Tammy Abraham couldn't hit the target as he tried to steer home an Emerson cross. Twenty-year-old Argentine Lautaro Martinez, who joined Inter ...
