Ronaldo seeks encore against 'battle-hardened' Morocco

Cristiano Ronaldo will attempt to follow up his World Cup opening game heroics for Portugal against a Morocco side licking their wounds after a crushing last-gasp defeat. A hat-trick from the five-time world player of the year snatched a thrilling 3-3 draw for the European champions against Spain in a heavyweight Group B showdown in Sochi. It was Ronaldo's 51st career hat-trick, and the 51st in the tournament's history, as the Real Madrid star became just the fourth player to score in four World Cups. "I am very happy, it's a nice personal record to have, one more in my career," said Ronaldo. "For me the most important thing is to emphasise what the team did against one of the favourites to win this World Cup." Despite lifting the trophy at Euro 2016, Portugal are not widely viewed as among the favourites in Russia but can take a big step towards the last 16 with victory over Morocco in Moscow on Wednesday. "I think we are stronger than Morocco if we compare the two teams, but I'm not

Luis Suarez seeks World Cup redemption as he reaches 100 caps

For a player who has made so many headlines at the World Cup, it is appropriate that Luiz Suarez will make his 100th appearance for Uruguay at football's biggest tournament. Barring any last minute disasters the Barcelona striker will reach his century of games for the Celeste on Wednesday when they play Saudi Arabia in Rostov-on-Don in Group A's second round of matches. The match should be routine and could secure Uruguay's passage to the knockout stage, but with Suarez football fans know that very few things are mundane. The last two World Cups have seen Suarez exit in ignominy. In 2010, the forward was sent off after making a last minute "save" against Ghana, which helped avoid defeat and saw the South Americans progress to the last four. The incident became so infamous it got its own Wikipedia entry -- Suarez even described it as the best save of the tournament -- but that was nothing to what happened four years later. In 2014, he was banned from all football for four months and ..

Low turnout but warm welcome for victorious England in Volgograd

Memories of fan violence hung over England's first Word Cup match in the Russian city of Volgograd on Monday but these were all but forgotten after Harry Kane's injury-time winning goal against Tunisia. On top of the 2-1 result, fans said they had been given a warm welcome in the southern city despite ice-cold relations between Moscow and London. "I didn't want it to be so easy that we were walking over them," said Jonathan Phillips, from London and in Russia for the first time, after it looked like the match would end in a draw until the last minute. "Everybody in Russia has been really welcoming, everything they say about the country doesn't apply," the 50-year-old nurse told AFP. "People in England said don't go, you won't come back, but it's been great," he added as flag-draped England fans chanted Harry Kane's name outside the 45,000-seater stadium. Uzi Alan, a 28-year-old banker from London, echoed the sentiment. "We started well and then we slowed down a bit, but it was amazing

Martinez worried over opposition targeting of Belgian skipper Hazard

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said he is concerned aggressive targeting of Eden Hazard by opposition defenders could lead to his side losing their captain and star player at the World Cup. Belgium ran out 3-0 winners over tournament new boys Panama in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi on Monday, with Dries Mertens opening the scoring before Romelu Lukaku netted twice. Chelsea star Hazard set up Lukaku's second goal, as the Red Devils overcame a difficult first half in the Group G encounter. But the game was also marked by some tough challenges, with five Panama players booked by the Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe. "It is a worry that in any of those tackles he could really get hurt," said Martinez. "It doesn't worry me if that is a way of trying to stop him. Everyone is allowed to prepare games in the way that you can. It is very much allowed and that is part of the rules, and you could run a risk of getting a player sent off. "My worry is that maybe in one of those tackles, we ...

And the north Africans were still level as the game went past the 90-minute mark. But Harry Maguire won a header from a corner and Kane was on hand at the far post to nod in the winner before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates. "I'm so proud of the lads," Kane said. "They kept going, kept going to the last second. "I am absolutely buzzing, everyone on the staff is. It shows good character to get the job done." England had started brightly in a blur of passing and movement and could have been two goals up inside the first four minutes. Chandimal sweats as Sri Lanka and West Indies draw 2nd Test

Kraigg Brathwaite's defiance and more inclement weather ensured a draw on the final day of the second Test between the West Indies and Sri Lanka at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia. On a day when their captain, Dinesh Chandimal, who has been charged by umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould with ball tampering on the second day of the match, is likely to know his fate, the tourists stayed focused on events on the field in reducing the home side to 64 for four in early afternoon after setting the West Indies an unlikely victory target of 296. However Brathwaite's obdurate, unbeaten 59, with support from Shai Hope and captain Jason Holder ensured that the showers which came in the final session, coupled with deteriorating light, eliminated the Sri Lankans' chances of levelling the series. Shannon Gabriel took the last two wickets of the Sri Lankan second innings within minutes of the start of play to finish with the outstanding innings analysis of eight for 62 and match figures of 13 for ..
