East Bengal through to Super Cup final after 1-0 win over FC Goa
Dudu Omegbemi struck the match's only goal as East Bengal recorded a 1-0 win over FC Goa to make the final of the inaugural Super Cup, here today. After a goalless first half, Nigerian striker Dudu broke the deadlock in 78th minute at the Kalinga Stadium. East Bengal now await the winners of the second semi-final between Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC. The Kolkata side's coach Khalid Jamil went in with a 4-5-1 combination with Dudu the lone striker upfront and Ugandan Khalid Aucho getting his first start in midfield. FC Goa's coach Derick Pereira fielded a 4-4-2 with Manvir Singh partnering Spaniard Ferran Corominas (Coro) in attack. It was a scrappy first-half which ended goalless. Afghan wicketkeeper Shahzad fined after playing for Pakistan club
Trouble-prone Afghanistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad has been fined after he was caught playing for a Pakistani cricket club without permission, an Afghan official said Monday. Shahzad has been ordered to pay 300,000 Afghanis (about USD 4,400) and return to Afghanistan after taking part in a local tournament in Peshawar, a Pakistani city near the Afghan border. The 30-year-old went to Pakistan after Afghanistan returned from Zimbabwe last month following their qualification for the 2019 World Cup, Lutfullah Stanikzai, head of media and marketing for the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), told AFP. Rules require players to obtain a "no objection certificate" if they want to play matches other than those approved by the ACB. This is not the first time that Shahzad has fallen foul of regulations. All India police judo championship in Delhi begins tomorrow
Over 1,100 judokas will be vying for honours when the national judo championship of police forces begins at the Indira Gandhi Indoor stadium here tomorrow. The five-day tournament, which will end on April 21, is being hosted by border guarding force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and 34 central and state police forces. SSB Director General R K Mishra today unveiled the logo and mascot of the games-- the All India Police Judo Cluster Championship (AIPJCC). The four games that will be held as part of the tournament, include Judo, Wushu, Taekwondo and Gymnastics. "A total of 1,114 players, that include 800 male and 314 female participants, are taking part in the event. This is the second edition of these police games," a senior official said.
PKL team Tamil Thalaivas names Bhaskaran as coach for Season-6
Chennai-based Pro-Kabaddi League team, Tamil Thalaivas today announced Edachery Bhaskaran as its coach for the upcoming season. The former U Mumba coach will take over from Kasinatha Baskaran, who has been named Technical Director-Thalaivas' Strategic Grassroot Programme,a press release said. India cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is among the co-owners of Tamil Thalaivas. Bhaskaran, with a diploma in coaching from National Institute of Sports, has had stints as the national team coach. He also led U Mumba to the PKL title in Season 2, the release said. Tamil Thalaivas had recently retained the services of Ajay Thakur, Amit Hooda and C Arun for PKL season-6, beginning on October 19.
Angry Donaldson squares up to umpire in Monte Carlo
American youngster Jared Donaldson squared up to French umpire Arnaud Gabas after losing his temper over a line call in bizarre scenes during a Monte Carlo Masters match on Monday. After Gabas got out of his chair to check a mark, Donaldson lost his cool when a serve from opponent Albert Ramos Vinolas was called in when he thought it was out. The 21-year-old Donaldson was adamant Gabas checked the wrong mark in the clay and squared up to the official while shouting at him insisting that what the umpire was pointing at "wasn't a mark". He then refused to play the next game until a supervisor was called to the court, claiming "I can call the supervisor whenever I want". MRF to enter World Rally Championship-2 with Gaurav Gill
Indian tyre maker MRF today confirmed its much awaited entry into the FIA World Rally Championship-2 category with ace driver Gaurav Gill. The switch to WRC-2 ends MRF's 16-year campaign in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship where it won nine titles including three with Gill. Team MRF is now foraying into the WRC 2 with Gaurav Gill at the wheel," said the tyre-maker in a statement, revealing very little about its latest venture. The announcement means Gill finally gets to drive at a significantly higher level, something he was itching to do after the APRC success in 2013, 2016 and 2017.
