Anti-doping officials conducted more than 3,000 tests ahead of the Commonwealth Games in an effort to weed out athletes who might be cheating well ahead of their competitions. David Sharpe, chief executive of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, said today that 2,600 tests were conducted on Australian athletes and 500 more on international athletes, some of whom were only at the qualifying stage for the April 4-15 games on the Gold Coast. Dr. Mani Jegathesan of the Commonwealth Games Federation's medical commission said doping samples from Commonwealth Games athletes would now be stored for 10 years so they could be retested when new testing regimens became available. Jegathesan said anti-doping authorities take into account the "risk element" and use intelligence reports so that "every test counts.

Volleyball Australia bankrolled the event to secure a spot on the program for the Gold Coast event, where it has been a popular and perfect fit for the games. Volleyball Australia President Craig Carracher said his organization had funded the increased number of athletes attending the seven-day, 12-nation beach volleyball competition. As far as he's aware, that's unprecedented. But Carracher is thinking of the future, already trying to keep the sport on the program when the games are staged in Birmingham, England in 2022. "Our legacy is for our sport to be included in Birmingham and for the athletes to be able to start preparing now for those games," Carracher said. The Maharashtra government today announced cash prizes for those who bagged medals in the ongoing Commonwealth Games Gold Coast. A release issued by the Chief Minister's office stated that Madhurika Patkar and Pooja Sahasrabuddhe, both from Thane, and Sanil Shetty have bagged gold in table tennis. Also, Chirag C Shetty of Vile Parle has bagged a gold medal in badminton. Besides, Heena Sidhu, who lives in the Mumbai suburb of Goregaon, has won a gold and silver medal in two categories of pistol shooting, it said. The release stated that each gold medal winner will be rewarded with a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh, silver medallists with Rs 30 lakh and bronze winners will be awarded Rs 20 lakh each. Besides, their coaches shall be honoured with Rs 12.5 lakh, Rs 7.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, respectively for each gold, silver and bronze medal won by the players from the state.
