CWG's first transgender competitor withdraws in tears after injury

After warming some hearts and causing resentment to others, New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard - the first transgender to compete at the Commonwealth Games - was left in tears when she had to withdraw from women's +90kg weightlifting competition owing to a dislocated shoulder. Formerly Gavin Hubbard before transitioning into a woman in her 30s, the 40-year-old Hubbard has attracted quite a bit of attention and some scorn from rivals. Samoan weightifting team head coach Jerry Wallwork insisted that Hubbard being allowed to compete in the Games is unfair on the other women competitors as she still has the strength of a male, that she once was. "I haven't really read or followed commentary regarding my competing at the Commonwealth Games. I don't really have an opinion," was Hubbard's response to the controversy. She was, however, worried about the crowd reception but the warmth offered by the spectators left her overwhelmed. "It would be untrue to say the thought never crossed my .

Narine's innings was turning point: Mandeep

Sunil Narine's blistering half-century made all the difference and paved the way for Kolkata Knight Riders' winning start in the Indian Premier League here, Royal Challengers Bangalore batsman Mandeep Singh said. Narine, who had scored IPL's fastest fifty last season against the same opposition, smashed a whirlwind 50 from 19 balls to make light of the 177-run target last night. Narine completed the milestone in 17 balls to become the fourth joint fastest IPL fifty scorer. Mandeep said they scored a decent total but Narine was the turning point. "Definitely, the turning point was Narine's innings. If you get a good start like this in the first six overs, 50 per cent of the game is over. There was not much left for others to do for the rest of the batsmen," Mandeep said at the post-match conference. Part-time off-spinner Nitish Rana (2/11) picked up the big wickets of AB de Villiers and skipper Virat Kohli in successive deliveries to reduce the visitors to 127/4 in 14.3 overs before ...

I had unflinching belief in my ability to fight back: Jitu Rai

Jitu Rai says he believed unflinchingly, unquestionably in his ability to stage a comeback and win the men's 10m air pistol gold after a rather average qualifying outing in the 21st Commonwealth Games here today. "Frankly speaking, my qualification score was not very good, but I had 100 percent faith in my ability that I can do it, because I have done well in the finals and won many medals in the past. My belief was unflinching," the unassuming Rai said. The World Championship silver medallist broke the CWG record (235.1) to claim the top prize by some distance in the finals after being placed fourth in the qualification phase with 570. "Two-three low scores pulled me down but then my belief helped me. That makes me really happy. So, I was confident of covering it in the finals and I never back off. So again, I am reaping the rewards of all the hard word work I have put in during training." Rai's less fancied compatriot Om Prakash Mitharval shattered the qualification record with a ...

Canada town honours hockey crash victims at somber vigil

Mourners in the tiny Canadian town of Humboldt, still struggling to make sense of a devastating tragedy, gathered at a prayer vigil to honour the victims of a truck-bus crash that killed 15 of their own and shook North American ice hockey. Nearly 3,000 people - half of the local population - attended the vigil at the Humboldt Broncos arena, which began with an a cappella performance of the national anthem, echoed by the crowd. Having visited the bedsides of injured players, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and public safety minister Ralph Goodale attended the event, which was punctuated with songs, prayers and a minute of silence. "By far its the biggest event that has ever been in our city. This is tonight one of the steps we have to go through to heal," said Rob Muench, mayor of the town in Saskatchewan province, wearing a Broncos team jersey. Hockey: Eyes on semifinal spot, Indian take on Malaysia

There haven't been any defeats to worry over but the Indian men's hockey team would be eager to ensure that its far-from-convincing campaign finds some footing when it takes on lower-ranked Malaysia at the Commonwealth Games here today. Starting off against Pakistan should have been ideal to get the adrenaline going for the defending silver-medallists but the pool B opener was among the most insipid encounters between the arch-foes till the last seven seconds produced all the drama, ending in a 2-2 draw. The Indians were expectedly livid, most of all coach Sjoerd Marijne, who went to the extent of saying that he didn't even recognise the team that played the game. Next up was Wales and the scoreline read 4-3 in India's favour, a win but the kind which should have been way more convincing. Malaysia is ranked way below in the FIH charts but Manpreet Singh's side has been known to slip up when least expected, the opening game against Pakistan being a testimony to that. A heartening ...
