Record-breaking Jitu wins gold, Mitharval bags bronze

Indian shooting ace Jitu Rai claimed the gold medal in men's 10m air pistol event by creating a new games record while compatriot Om Prakash Mitharval bagged a bronze at the 21st Commonwealth Games here today. World Championship silver medallist Rai shot 235.1 to comfortably finish top of the podium. Mitharval, who had established a new qualification record with 584, eventually finished with the bronze medal after aggregating 214.3 in the eight-man finals at the Belmont Shooting Centre. Australia's Kerry Bell managed to secure the silver medal with 233.5. In the finals, Jitu led with 100.4 at the end of stage 1, while Mitharval was third with 98.1. In stage 2 elimination, Rai started with 10.3 and 10.3 to lead the pecking order, even as his compatriot moved up and displaced Bell at second place with two 10.1s. Now Indian men's TT team stuns Singapore, enters CWG final

The Indian men's table tennis team today upstaged defending champions Singapore to enter the finals of the 21st Commonwealth Games here. Following in the footsteps of the women's team, which stunned Singapore to clinch its maiden gold in the CWG, the men's team got the better of the Asian powerhouse 3-2. Veteran Gao Ning was the only one who managed to record singles victories for Singapore. The 35-year-old legend, a three-time gold medallist at CWG, defeated Harmeet Desai and G Sathiyan 3-0 and 3-1 respectively but the rest of his team fell apart against the Indians. India's very own veteran star A Sharath Kamal won both his singles matches against Xue Jie Pang and Shao Feng Ethan Poh by similar margins of 3-0. In the doubles, the combination of Sathiyan and Desai rallied for a 3-1 win over Pang and Poh to clinch the issue for India.

Weightlifter Pardeep claims silver at CWG

Indian weightlifter Pardeep Singh (105kg) came agonisingly close to a gold but eventually settled for a silver after a close contest with Samoa's Sanele Mao in the Commonwelth Games here today. Singh, the reigning Commonwealth Championships gold-medallist, lifted a total of 352kg (152kg+200kg) to claim the second spot after an exciting showdown with Mao, which had the packed arena on its feet. The 23-year-old went for 211kg lift, which would have been a new Commonwealth and Games record in clean and jerk, but could not pull it off in his final attempt. His second attempt at 209kg was declared invalid by the jury despite getting the judges' nod as his elbow had pressed out. Mao also dropped his final attempt of 211kg but had managed to lift 206kg in his second chance. He finished with a total of 360kg (154kg+206kg). The bronze went to England's Owen Boxall (351kg (152kg+199kg).

Swimmer Nataraj crashes out of men's 200m backstroke

Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj crashed out of the men's 200 metre backstroke event of the Commonwealth Games after finishing sixth in heat 2 here today. Srihari clocked 2 minutes and 4.75 seconds to finish a disappointing sixth out of the seven competitors in his heat. He finished a good 6.83 seconds behind South Africa's Martin Binedell who clocked 1:57.92 to win the heat. Binedell also claimed the overall top position after the completion of all the three heats.

Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by four wickets in their opening match of IPL 11 at the Eden Gardens here today. Put into bat, Brendon McCullum (43) and AB de Villiers (44) were the top scorers for Bangalore, while skipper Mandeep Singh (37) and Virat Kohli (31) too contributed with the bat as RCB posted a decent 176-7. Woman athlete runs tea-stall to earn living

45-year-old A Kalaimani, an athlete by profession is now running a tea-stall in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore to earn a livelihood.Kalaimani, who is a mother of three, had participated in national and state level Masters Athletics events and won four gold medals."There is no help from the government for sportspersons. I earn Rs 400-500 from the tea shop, run my family and manage my sports requirements," Kalaimani told ANIKalaimani, who is participating in 41-km marathons with her team 'Phoenix Runners,' regularly attends her morning workout sessions and runs for 21 kilometers as part of her practice.Kalaimani has studied up to Class X and participated in kabaddi and athletics events during her schooling.Kalaimani said, "I had approached the banks for loans but they refused to give. Hence, I took help from my friend for financial support to participate in national events.

Indian women tennis team staged a winning show on Day 4 of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as they defeated defending champions Singapore 3-1 to claim gold.This is India's first ever gold at the multi-sport event. Bollywood super star and principal owner Shah Rukh Khan today cheered for Kolkata Knight Riders from the stands even as his new-look team, under new skipper Dinesh Karthik, looked to regain some lost ground in the post-Gautam Gambhir era at the Eden Gardens here.
