CWG'18: Drag-flicker Deep Grace marks 150th appearance for India
As Indian women's hockey team registered a 4-1 win over Malaysia at the Commonwealth Games against Malaysia, it also marked a special occasion for experienced Defender Deep Grace Ekka who achieved the milestone of completing 150 international caps for her India.The 23-year-old made her international debut for the national team in 2011 during the Four-Nation Tournament in Argentina.Her place in the international hockey was backed by strong performances in the U-18 Girls Asia Cup in Bangkok, where they won a bronze medal. Games champion boxer bitten in ugly opening bout
New Zealand boxer David Nyika alleged that his opponent bit him twice in an "ugly" fight as he launched his bid for a second Commonwealth Games gold on Friday. The 22-year-old heavyweight defeated Yakita Aska of Antigua and Barbuda 5-0 on Australias Gold Coast, but said the 91kg bout was far tougher than the scores suggested. "Its probably the closest fight Ive had. A little bit rugged, but a perfect start to a long tournament," said Nyika, who won 81kg gold at Glasgow 2014 as a teenager. "When they dont want to win, they want to survive, its tough. I copped a couple of bite marks, a couple of low blows. "Its a tough fight. He bit me in the end, but thats the sport were in. CWG' 18: Kaur scores twice as Indian eves defeat Malaysia 4-1
The Indian women's hockey team registered their first victory at the Commonwealth Games as they defeated Malaysia 4-1 in their second match of Pool A.Two goals from Gurjit Kaur (6', 39') and a goal each from skipper Rani (56') and Lalremsiami (59') saw the Indians secure a morale-boosting victory against their Asian counterparts. The only goal for Malaysia was scored by Nuraini Rashid in the 38th minute.India started the first quarter with electric pace and made chances inside the first minute itself. Indian weightlifter Deepak Lather won bronze in the men's 69 kg category on the Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games at the Carrara Stadium here on Friday.The 18-year-old lifted a combined weight of 295kg (136kg in snatch and 159kg in Clean and Jerk). SETHU FC defeated Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports and Education 3-1 to continue their winning streak in the Indian Women's League (IWL) football here today. Indumathi's 27th minute strike and Bangladesh international Sabina Khatun's brace helped SETHU FC collect three points after Pradeepa Sekar had pulled a goal back in the 35th minute. Teenager Deepak becomes youngest Indian weightlifter to win medal at CWG
Teenager Deepak Lather today became the youngest Indian weightlifter to claim a Commonwealth Games medal, clinching a bronze in the men's 69kg category here. The 18-year-old from Haryana lifted a total of 295kg (136kg+159kg) to finish third after his nearest rival, Vaipava Loane, fouled his last two lifts to end with a total of 292kg. The youngster, competing in his maiden Commonwealth Games, holds the distinction of being the youngest to hold the national record as well. He held the 62kg category national record at 15. He trained at the Army Sports Institute as a diver before being pushed into weightlifting by the coaches there. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu (48kg) and sanjita Chanu (53kg) won gold medals in the women's competition and P Gururaja claimed a silver in the men's 56kg category. The Indian weightlifters have so far claimed four medals in the event.
India women thrash Malaysia in 2nd CWG match
Defender Gurjit Kaur struck twice as the Indian women's hockey team brought its Commonwealth Games campaign back on track with a 4-1 thrashing of Malaysia in its second pool A match here today. Kaur's two penalty corner conversions (6th and 39th minutes), out of the three chances she got, along with skipper Rani Pampal and Lalremsiami's field goals in the 56th and 59th minute respectively helped India post a comprehensive victory and recover from the shock of their opening 2-3 loss to lower-ranked Wales. Malaysia's lone goal, in the 38th minute, also came from a defender's stick with Nuraini Rashid converting a penalty corner chance.
